I caved.

Had to drive to no less than 5 gamestops, 2 best buys, and a Target in Chicago to find this.  I heard my quota of "OH BRAH YOU GOTTA RESERVE OR ELSE THE GAMES ARE JUST GONE AND YOU'LL NEVER EVER GET THEM" speeches for the year.  The one time a game is scarce at release and they pounce on it and act like this is a common occurrence.  I usually don't bitch about gamestop but man, I wish I could say ANYTHING to get them to stop their preorder speeches forever.  I straight up say "I will not be preordering anything today" in advance and I still get it ("Oh? Are you sure you don't want to preorder? *names every game coming out in the next 6 months*".)   Even at the one I frequent, where the guys know me and we chat and stuff, they still say it every time and are like "sorry man I gotta ask this, my job you know" as if they're recording us.

anyway, enough venting....I am installing, puffing some herb, and playing...in that order

I just say "not interested" and leave it at that.  They are being told to go through the motions, so I understand these guys nagging, but it does nothing but make me want to avoid returning as much as possible.

And I do just that, ordering 99% of games from Amazon.  No bullshit, no hassle.

yeah, I usually go through amazon and only go to gamestop when I wait on impressions/reviews, then decide to impulse buy a game.

I get that it's their job, but seriously, when I call and ask for the game, they don't even say "yes" or "no," they get on the computer, give the speech while they're searching, and then either say "oh you got lucky this time" or "nope, see, like I said, you should have preordered blah blah."  They're scripted to bring up this point whenever possible, not just in the store, at the register.   It's insane!  But yeah, it's nothing new, it's just my turn to get pissed about it :)

And as expected, my brother replies by saying "I don't want this weird porno.  I don't even want it sitting on my desk.  Get it out of my sight.  I'm not going to play it".

 :-\

Basically what I figured.  Just like when I bought him Killer 7 and Okami and Yakuza and he never touched any of them.  :(  I try to broaden his narrow view of gaming and show him that there's smarter things in gaming than God of War or Dead Space or Call of Duty, but he doesn't care.

I'm really bad at selling non-gamers on gaming >_<

I wouldn't say he's a non-gamer, but going by the three you listed, he has an aesthetic he likes.

The dudebro aesthetic.

Dude, I think your brother is a dudebro, bro

This game is awesome.  Q-bert Championship Edition!

The story is surprisingly not offensive so far (just beat stage 2.)  I like how there's reality, where stuff isn't so odd, and his dreams, where the wacky japaneseness is set loose.

Made it to stage 7 (on Normal), gonna finish it tomorrow. The story and characters are okay so far, but really I feel like those sections go on for too long. I just wanna climb some blocks.

Anyway, this should be a fun game to 1000. Getting all gold prizes on Hard seems like it'll be a nice challenge.

ok, now this is a little distinguished mentally-challenged:

Second day:

Third day:

Vincent's friends: "Congratulations on the child!" and apparently no recollection of him saying he's screwing some girl on the side.

these people are not convincing adults at all :lol   Either that or Vincent has the dumbest friends ever because they can't see the obvious problem.

Gameplay is top notch though.  Sometimes my brain just scrambles trying to come up with a way up!  I'm surprised Atlus came up with such good non-turn based JRPG gameplay.

That's an easy quota for me to meet, as the number rests at "1." God, I hate that horse crap. If I know I want something, I'll order it on Amazon, and have it delivered to me on the launch day. If I am going to a retail store, I want to see what they have on hand, not pretend that I'm shopping online by pre-ordering stuff.

Finished my first playthrough earlier. I didn't care too much for the story for like the first half of the game, but it gets more interesting the further you progress. The ending itself is pretty damn stupid though ("best" end spoilers)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vincent: "Katherine, my cheating on you was all an illusion! You see, this girl I told you about turned out to be an imaginary succubus, so it never really happened. If you don't believe me, just ask my friends!" Katherine: "What? Well, okay. Let's get married now." :derp
[close]

The gameplay is great. Don't have much to say about it though, you just push blocks around and the stage layouts get more complex the further in you get. They're fun to complete.

I started up a second playthrough too; it's kinda funny how quickly you can zip through the first few stages after you're used to the techniques you learn through the later stages. Now I just need the gold prizes on stages 4 & 6, and then I guess I'll start up my Hard run.

It gets longer toward the end. My first playthrough was around 17 hours, but I left the game idle a lot so I dunno.

Anyway, just beat the first stage of Babel. That shit was really hard - it took me almost an entire day between yesterday and today  to beat. The next 3 stages are gonna be rough. :(

Stage 2 of Babel down. :)

I feel like stage 1 is kinda unfair and random, but stage 2 is much more about consistently playing smart. Gonna try stage 3 later, hopefully the random mystery blocks don't fuck things up too badly by being random (like they can do in the story).

Really great game though. I don't play action puzzle games like this often, so being challenged with something different is a nice change of pace.

Hear hear.

This game feels like Persona team made a baby with Intelligent Qube. It is absolutely amazing. I'm getting the same addiction to it that I had to Persona 3 when it came out due to the set up: night and day, ya know? In Persona 3 I was always like "one more day!" and then I'd look up at my calendar and I had already played a week of in game. The same thing happens in Catherine, I'll tell myself, one more day, I gotta get to the top and then my clock shows 2 am.

I'm playing on easy, mostly for the story, and this mode can tease my brain. I can't wait to play on normal after this.

But ultimately, it feels like Persona/SMT realized into a puzzle game. It contains every single thing I love about those games: unique settings, strong characters with different philosophical views, with an alignment system that doesn't feel "good/bad" but more personal and subjective than that. It is relentlessly stylish, with a wonderful ode to the famous poets and philosophers through time, with its own uniquely created mythology, and let's not forget the game difficulty and the way those games tend to make players ocd. I haven't been buying items from the salesman just because I don't want to lower my chances of getting gold.

I think we're in for a treat, whatever Megami Tensei Atlus decides to make for current gen consoles, whether it's Shin Megami Tensei or Persona. Because this game is the shit.

By the way I have been stuck on stage 4 of Rapunzel for the longest. HELP.

P3 and P4 have a better story though, so I guess adult characters are inferior after all.

Anyway, Babel is shit. Stage 3 and presumably 4 are about 65% luck thanks to all the randomness. Maybe RPG developers should stick to RPGs.

I played Persona when I was more into RPGs. If I started it now, I probably wouldn't make it past the intro (like when I started Persona 2 a few months ago, I got bored after 4-5 hours and quit playing). But I don't hate RPGs or anything... I just think of them more as filler now.

Nier is good through the entire first playthrough, though it's nothing particularly special. It's just a standard RPG story. The second playthrough is basically the other half of the story, and the third playthrough adds more character to Kaine and her shadow IIRC. The fourth playthrough is for the true ending.

I would say it's the only game this gen that's worth playing for the story alone. The god-tier soundtrack is just a bonus.

edit: actually, Bioshock 1 was good too (except for the ending). almost forgot about that.

I didn't get frustrated during the story, but I get really annoyed when I die to random shit that's out of my control, like the last 25% of Obelisk. Even the random stuff in the story is avoidable since the pattern for each stage is set, so you can adjust your route to avoid those areas. Still fun though. At least Axis Mundi seems a lot better.

Catherine being Atlus' most successful launch has me thinking that when they do release Persona 5 in the States, they should just rebrand that shit. All the fans will know it's Persona 5, but if gamers are willing to give Catherine a go they might be willing to give Persona 5 a go if it is released under a different title. I think people are less likely to just pick up Persona 5 on a whim, even if the story has nothing to do with the previous series entries.

It would infuriate the fanboyz though.  :japancry
