Cyniculture had a good design, Devo. Honestly I hate web design. My passion is print, covers, stuff like that. Web design feels impersonal and cold, and rarely artistic. It's rare that a websites design contains an actual message, so it doesn't work with me. Though it can be fun, I don't like doing it professionally.

Yeah I didn't even design the site itself Cor did, I had some random minimal input though. I wanted to make banners and such for blogs. I made some for threads.

Corporate campaigns. It's all quite conservative and it's hard for me to garner inspiration.

But before that, he got a bunch of chumps on the Bore to give him XBLA points codes and then subsequently sold them on eBay.

Ah so that's what he did. I knew it was something like that.

It makes plenty of sense. Web design is neat looking, but it's rarely used as something used for expression. Even most web ads are one note. That's fine and all, and they're cool, but I find the production process tedious. The best you'll get, in terms of messages and artistic expression, are banners.

Demi: agreed.

It doesn't make sense because there's nothing you can't do on the web that you can do in print, but the opposite is very far from being truth. I think you just need a more refined sense of what makes a website beautiful. It isn't big flourishes and poor readability due to crazy fonts that's for sure.

It really depends and most of web design is less about designing - in the artistic sense - and more about putting pieces together to form the site. Apples and oranges, but I hate web design work and it bores me. I also dislike how so many jobs demand coder monkeys to be designers as well. All I want to do is make pretty pictures. I could not give two shits about coding this or that.

That's what makes it so cool. It's like a puzzle. And it's still like print design, for that matter. Gotta start somewhere.

Apples and oranges, but I hate web design work and it bores me.

I can see that. For me it's like the most fun I ever have working.  :heartbeat

I also dislike how so many jobs demand coder monkeys to be designers as well.

I'm unaware of this. From my perspective web jobs are becoming more and more specialized. But then again I don't know if you think HTML and CSS are "coding" (they're not.)

All I want to do is make pretty pictures. I could not give two shits about coding this or that.

Many jobs are requiring people (or at least advertising) that they want them to be fantastic at photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, indesign, on top of being good at html, css, java;etc. It saves money in hard economic times - why pay two people with two different specializations instead of one person who can do both?

Web design isn't really similar to print design due to layout though.

Magazines are always usually far more visual than the average web site.

vs

Notice how in print, the text is there to service visual aesthetic and not the other way around.

That's not to say web doesn't contain layouts that aren't standard, but due to the very nature of the web, standardizations are key. That way, whenever someone goes to your site they aren't lost by the non-conformist layout. In comparison, print allows more expression and experimentation.

Yup.

Edit- Himu that's a bad example of a website to compare. You probably chose it because it was a "magazine" theme but beautiful websites are beautiful because they eschew much of print's concepts. Choosing a site that tries to be like print is just lame. It's like why the new iCal is an abomination. Skeuomorphism can suck it.

You're missing his point in web design as a medium being much too limiting in terms of stuff he likes to do. It's a fair point and it's the reason I'm not a fan either. Functionality always comes first and sites that don't do this look like dogshit even if their concepts are cool because navigation and hierarchy of design is so rigid.

It's like... people debating games as art, those who say games aren't art are comparing them too closely to other forms of art, like movies. But it's something entirely new and different and you have to change how you appreciate it. Games are fun to play, movies are fun to watch. Print is pretty to look at, websites are fun to interact with. Something like that. Not strictly of course. You can have games that are fun to watch and sites that are pretty to look at.

Yeah but you're arguing about preference in medium. Some people prefer constraints, some people don't.

I'm saying it's an equal amount of constraint. I understand people may not like the constraints of web design, but you can't just pretend print doesn't have any, either. You have to play to their strengths, is my point.

To me a limitation is just a limitation. It and creativity aren't really related because creativity blossoms no matter the medium. Doesn't change that I find web design to be tedious, though. Your have your tastes and I have mine.

SomethingAwful is not friendly to new users at all. My avatar is a crying baby that says "Stupid Newbie", and on my user control panel, I have a message that says "No new PMs (because no one likes you)."

Sounds like $10 well spent.

$50 in Methodis' case. :smug

I also think Devo is cool and apologize for some of the things I said back then. I still disagree with a lot of her more feminist positions

If I was a creeper I'd also point out I'm becoming more attracted to her. Instead I'll just say I think we can be good friends :bow

Dude we bros. Bros before hos. Wait. Fuck. How does this work when a bro is a ho.

I believe in this instance, the ho in question would actually be a she-bro.

i invited lennedsay. :bow me

[im]http://i.imgur.com/TtKDm.jpg[/img]
this is her right? Eh she's cool but not creepable

:rofl I've never seen someone look so uncomfortable in my life.

Here's my take (I'm an expert): Chick flirts with guys at a meetup, but she thinks she's just "being nice." One guy falls for it. Exchange of phone numbers. He texts her, hoping she'll bite. She responds in a friendly manner, but not nearly as often as he texts her. To him, this means she must be tired/busy and he should continue to keep her on the line (that she was never on to begin with). To her, it's cute and flattering at first and then she gets annoyed and creeped out as it goes on. She continues to be creeped out as he continues to pursue this elusive creature. Situation eventually detonates.

She obviously knew he was interested but never really flat out turned him down until he called her out. If she wasn't interested, she should've sucked it up, grew a pair, and told him. If she couldn't grow a pair, then she could've at least dropped hints about being interested in EL instead. Or friendzoned him completely, i.e. "you're such a good friend." Anything else really, and he would've reluctantly gotten the hint. Instead she continued to respond in a vague yet friendly manner that any chubby virgin would mistake as high relationship probability.

Of course, this is just going on the known "facts" (lol). From what was presented, it is a classic case of cute-girl-chubby-guy rather than stalker material. She thinks he's a nice, friend-type who wouldn't dare hit on her, and he thinks he has a chance and jumped the gun on their nonexistent status. lulz all around.

As I said, Nintendoll's cute, but this here's a woman that's worth stalking.

Len, will you be my Jodie Foster?  :heartbeat

Also the whole stalker thing was actually really sad, and just reinforces the schrodingers stalker theory.
