If there's no content behind the "theme" then yes. I'm not talking about Gaga - I may not like her music, although she does have songs I do like. But I know she's very talented and doesn't use image as a crutch. The same can't be said of Rihfund, Kesha, etc.

S&M is her only "enjoyable" song and that's just because it's simple, repetative and catchy. Sounds kinda cool to listen too, but I would hesitate to call it "good" as, to me, that implies something else.

TOTAL gimmick. "Tightrope" is just straight-up gimmicky gimmick.

If there's no content in a musical theme, it's a gimmick; it's what Lady Gaga tends to do with most everything post-The Fame Monster. Adele treads the ground of broken relationships over and over through 21, but she's approaching it in different ways with different subjects; there's some depth to the theme.

If she can't get past it for her next album, though, then it becomes a gimmick to get sales.

Actually Robo is right. Blue eyed soul is extremely marketable and safe. Part of my appreciation for Adele is that she's not a busty blonde or sex symbol: she's an overweight Brit with a modest background. I think that's part of the reason there hasn't been too much of a black backlash over her. Oftentimes you see arguments about white people "stealing" black music, and certainly some of those people hate on Adele but overall the reaction has been positive.

A white vessel is always going to do better if they're actually talented and not fraudulent (*cough* Joss Stone, Fergie). Does it suck someone like Sharon Jones could have released Rolling In the Deep and barely gone platinum? Sure. But that's how it is.
