Not to mention the unparalled story-driven gaming, such as in Gears, we would not have today without Super Mario Bros. setting the groundwork for assuming the audience can handle it? I don't think it's that surprising.  As a singular game, HL2 is a bit of a letdown: uneven, TERRIBLE A.I., unnecessarily drawn-out.  Though I liked it more the last time I played through it with deflated expectations.

A stealth game with a ridiculous amount of secrets and play styles. No kill runs? No alerts? With an incredible amount of depth, variety, with fantastic boss fights (two hour long sniper fight in the jungle), fantastic enemy AI, multiple difficulties and unlockables. It is the best stealth game ever.

Versus Half Life 2.

An above average single player fps with average shooting mechanics, horrifically average AI, uneven pacing, and a gameplay style that doesn't really emphasize play styles but doing whatever Valve wants you to do at that point in time?

Metal Gear Solid 3 slaughters Half Life 2 in every regard: content, variety, pacing, boss fights, depth, difficulty, AI, memorable moments.

I like both games a lot, but I'd give the nod to MGS3 as well. Half Life 2 is a very polished game and set the standard for FPS single player, but gameplay-wise I love MGS3 a little bit more.

MGS3 has no radar, the best gameplay:cutscene ratio, there's really only a bunch of cutscenes at the beginning of the game. The entire middle is purely gameplay. My first playthrough of MGS3 lasted me a little over 30 hours.

The camera limitations in MGS3 vanilla are really annoying, though.  Much of the stealth amounts to: take three steps, crouch, *first person view*, look around, go to menu, switch camo, take three more steps... repeat.

I probably couldn't stomach playing through it again.  Subsistence, however

Eh, at the time I was fine with MGS3 vanilla.

But yeah Subsistence is incredibly better. Makes me mad they took out top down view in future MGS' because top down view works in conjunction with third person view. They're supposed to compliment each other.

And yeah, I hate MGS4. Still stands as the only MGS I have never replayed. I'm almost scared to. It'd probably be 2 and a half hours of gameplay. No other MGS is like that. Plus, how the hell do you speed run it? It'd be so disorienting because you change locations ever chapter. On top of that, if a speed run is what we're talking about, how the hell do you skip that part where you follow that dude in chapter 3? Who wants to do that again? I haven't done it yet, but the "war" type setting doesn't seem like it'd compliment a no kill or no alerts run either.

I'll just pretend it doesn't exist like usual.

In the future gamers are gonna look back on MGS4 and laugh at the fact that each chapter had to be "installed" and yet said chapters are still broken up into zones. There's no win lose here its all lose lose in regards to loading. I've just built a huge intolerance towards loading times and MGS4 is the biggest offender. And this is one of many issues I had with it. Also, no VR Mode! That alone gives one the feeling that Kojima washed his hands of the game.

I have a pretty good setup now that I have my GTX580.  I don't have any SSD drives though, haven't seen where I would use them.  They're so small.  It's not like I can put my steam dir on them since my steam dir always has like 50-100 games installed at any given time for ~400-500gigs.  And I don't care about making windows boot faster since I just leave my pc on 24/7 and hardly ever reboot.  I don't use slow ass apps like Premiere/Photoshop and load times in PC games never bother me.  I can afford a 60gig SSD pretty easily and they'd take 2 seconds to install, but I just don't see how I would benefit from one at all so I haven't bought one.
