game specific threads are the only ones worth it imo. There are some people who are a little too enthusiastic, but generally discussion is topical and moves along. Even just stepping half-way out, into a 'fighting game tournament stream' thread (rather than a specific fighting game thread) you get people bitching about one game versus another and throwing around abuse randomly trying to one-up each other with their masterful trollery.

very true. The threads I go to are more multi-player oriented, like the street fighter thread - where I can go to learn more about how I should be playing and also find players that are relatively close to me both in skill and location (for lag; since the in-game option for this is based on country and mine is very small).

If I want to talk about a game - like a discussion about how well this mechanic was executed in this game versus this other game or something. I don't do that on gaf. That would be ill-advised.

Those threads used to be the main threads I could actually post seriously in on GAF and expect a fairly reasonable discussion because they were very strictly grounded in fact and Dragona watched them like a hawk.  Of course, as Dragona stopped spending time on GAF, the horrible Nintendo fantard side that lurks in a lot of the Sales-age spergers starting coming loose, and as Sony's sales stopped being too shameful to live, the Sony fantards moved in, and now they've pretty much become as stupid or more stupid than anything on NeoGAF.

It's pretty amazing how anti-discussion posters on gaf can be these days.  For a while I've been avoiding any thread that seemed increasingly it's just a bunch of cynics trying to shout the loudest, but I randomly decided to post in one today because it was sort of relevant.  The summation of what I said was essentially "as a new iphone user, iphone games aren't that bad for certain types of games" and someone responds like I offended him/her.  Not a retort or counter-argument.  Just slinging hate because, I assume, he/she disagreed.  And then I read other posts in that thread and realized that it was par for the thread.  It's just not worth it.

and game threads on gaf are mostly great.  like, everyone in the dark souls threads is pretty awesome.  the deus ex threads were pretty awesome too.  oddly, those threads don't go to shit when someone holds a conflicting opinion.  usually there's another thread made because someone thinks his/her negative opinion is worth sharing with a larger audience.  or when the sequel is announced.  or any thread that's only slightly related.  or when it's mentioned by someone else in a completely unrelated thread but it goes off on a tangent anyway.

I like the recent-ish threads of having the main thread, a spoiler thread, and in some cases, the garbage thread.

If you're into JRPGs you should at least try it, it's very solid. Refined to pure gold.

BW made grass tiles shake for a super-exp giving Pokemon.

Pokemon gets away with it because it does it the best. Limited areas in the overworld that can even cause random battles, cheap and plentiful repels for when you really don't want them (and backtracking.) Only real downside is still caves, but repels take care of that.

there have been changes between each pokemon game.  like call of duty, musou, madden, and games that don't change too much between versions, the subtleties are lost to non-fans.

that said, Pokemon has and will always be a "my first rpg" for young children.  the 'rpg' stuff is ridiculously simplistic, only slightly above Quest 64 and Opoona.  It's really all about the grindan.  Red/Blue was basically rocks, paper, scissor with grindan.  grindan to collect pokemon.  grindan to level pokemon.  grindan on this version; grindan on that version.   later games have the shiny pokemon and you know there be grindan.

seriously, what's the appeal of a shiny pokemon? it's just a reason to grindan ad infinitum



besides, pulseman and drill dozer > pokemon.  game freak wastes its potential.

I've never played a Pokemon game aside from when Red/Blue came out, playing my brother's saved game a bit and wasting all his Pokeballs on catching Pidgeys... then beating the Elite 4 right when he got to the end of it, before he could. I just picked up PKMN White though.

Underperform where? Japan? I could see MH3:G actually pulling the 3DS up from it's slump there. But if anyone is thinking MH3:G is coming to America/Europe and thinks it's going to sell at "Call of Duty" numbers (or hell, "better than the series has sold here before") is downright delusional and frankly should've seen it coming. I'll eat my hat/crow if MH3:G actually comes to America and sells well because... frankly... I can't see the appeal and it's mechanics after attempting to get into the series about three or five times just isn't "Western appeal"ing.

Mods... having bias in their moderation!? Say it isn't so! You're never going to get that because I'm sure EL would de-mod anyone that openly admitted to their biases so fast it would make that moderators headspin. But I think everyone knows Kagari has a hard-on for Sony and "Lord Wada-sama."

Right. But I think two of your examples (CoD, Madden) don't change at all. Or if they do it's at a glacier pace to where I don't really notice. The under the hood changes to Pokemon are mostly felt by "older"/was there for generation one fans that mostly pay the Battle aspects of the game. The little kids aren't going to give a shit about IV/EV's and "OMG THIS ATTACK HAS STAB AND THIS ONE DOESN'T." They're just going to dress Pikachu up and have him dance in a musical. Which is completely fine because I feel Pokemon is a decent "all-age" game that you can play once and see what the fuss is about and then you can either ignore it or go with another region/generation and go at it again.
