I've heard a saying: the bigger the wedding, the more likely the marriage is to fail.

It has held true with my friends. The people who wanted a small, relatively quiet wedding (which still costs $5,000+ from what I've heard), their marriages are still going strong. A friend of mine spent $40,000 for theirs and the marriage is about finished. The only thing keeping it up is that they want to have a baby to save it, which is fucking disastrous. Good luck with that one.

Our wedding wasn't cheap, but it wasn't some crazy ass ordeal either. Got married in my wife's childhood church in Omaha (basically free), and had the reception at the Omaha Press Club (her Dad is a member so it was a lot cheaper). My father-in-law used investment money he had earmarked specifically for the wedding. We paid for our 2-week honeymoon in Japan with our own money.

Asian weddings are giant events mainly to show off that the family of the bride/groom can afford such extravagance.
