i don't really want to start anything here, but uh devo, surely you realize countering broad, sweeping, ignorant statements with broad, sweeping, ignorant statements isn't exactly the way the cartoon all-stars would win a debate, right?

Which broad statements? I realize not every dude on the internet or even GAF suffers from what I'm talking about but there is a lot of them over there who have no problem projecting or just being sexist morons, then get mad when called on it. That's the funniest part.

I have a "Know your audiences" rule when it comes to my offensive jokes or lines. And for some odd reason I said a rape joke in front of a friend who laughed her ass off over it. Later on I found out she was a rape victim so I apologized and her response was "Look you're fine you didn't know and I thought it was funny". Still felt horrible and never brought it up again. I don't think its a good idea to ever do that even though I got lucky.

This is basically how I go about it too. There are some horrendous jokes that I would only say to close friends that I know won't be hurt by them. I love listening to comedy that would be seen as offensive to most people too. But I know when to turn that part of me off. The problem in gaming is that a lot gamers don't know how to do that. They just spout off shit like its nothing to a bunch of random people in an online game.

And when someone writes an article complaining about this, they feel a need to hit back harder for some reason. What I don't get is why this is getting so much resistance on GAF of all places. Those guys love bashing every aspect of the industry, why is this such a hard pill to swallow?

Why is anything revolving around decency towards women hard for the internet to swallow in general? Lots of sexually frustrated douchebags or just plain projection via assholes. It's not just a GAF thing. Much of the internet involves denigration and circle jerks against minorities and especially women. Even the trans folk on GAF get more respect than women. There is a collective of frustrated and bitter folks over on GAF who never miss a step in toeing the line and saying some sexist shit or trolling ladygaf. Even a bunch of so called married/has a gf GAF seems very insecure about their masculinity for whatever reason.

Not only that, but Gaf houses some of the most disturbing opinions out there. No where else will you find people defending pedophiles. So anyone disliking me on Gaf doesn't faze me. Most there can only fit in on Gaf. They can no make normal relationships with people outside of their bubble of pokemon and loli pillows.

Not necessarily. I recall a thread about victim blaming in which I felt like one of the few saying a woman's dress should not come into question when she's assaulted or raped. Others thought the clothing of a victim, the more "slutty", would incite a man to rape. In several threads it's felt like me against the internet given how few women there are on GAF who vocalize in such threads. I consider them the smart ones.

There is always complaining about a thread being racist and then they all go to the racist thread to combat the ignorant opinions in it. They all go back into the black gaf thread and get upset about what people say in thread they just visit.

Sure, I understand its upsetting to see words and posts like that. But at the same time, they have been on gaf even longer than I've been. If the admins allow racist behavior and comments to thrive, then why try to police the forum?

I'd say, just avoid those threads and let them stew in their own filth.

its what i do. ive only felt pulled to the trayvon martin thread, and even then, i was done with a post. the rest of the threads are just watched over. but its easy to be shocked by the thinks said on gaf. its full of people that claim to be better than the reddits and 4chans of the world, only to fall into the same weak ass tropes that they do. the only reason people dont talk anymore about certain topics is the fear of a ban.

I think there may be some truth to the idea that a "slutty" dressing person will be more likely to get raped if there is a sexual predator in the area who is absolutely determined to rape somebody that night.

I just automatically assumed devo was posting in every one of those threads, therefore making some fun arguments go on at least. It's totally pointless to argue sex or religion with most people though, free will is far more powerful than logic in those matters.

I'm usually in the BlackGAF thread and know what you mean. But it's hard to see people spread ignorance and not challenge it. Over the last few months their has been an explosion of race threads in one form or another that have gotten heated a lot of people sharing some very dodgy opinions on race. I suppose even though people should ignore them it's hard.

The conversation was basically me saying that even if the religion says they are supposed to wear scarves and such, it makes no sense to have a law requiring it as that removes the choice component from it. Something cannot count as a good deed if you are forced to do it.

Their responses were that if just one rape is prevented by this law, then it's all worth it. I tried to get them to say that that means that a woman's hair gives them the urge to rape, which makes no sense for somebody born and raised in the Bay Area. We went arguing in circles and eventually they started talking about how they actually find a woman with scarf on to be more attractive than one just showing her hair, but by then I was too tired to continue arguing.
