Europe had slaves but outlawed slavery years before America did. Many UK slaves were naturalized into European society afterwards and many Africans emigrated to Europe in the 1900's. That's not to say they were all treated fairly or even equally, however, but to say that whites had a 4000 year head start is ignoring history, and especially BLIND to history considering Africa's history with Europe to begin with, namely the Moors and the Reconquista.

I think it should be noted that it was specifically the United Kingdom which was, for a major colonial power, early in banning slavery. Portugal and France didn't ban slavery in all their territories until after the United States adopted the Thirteenth amendment. And even my native Netherlands only just abolished it in Suriname two years prior to the adoption of that amendment. We did pay compensation though! Just a shame the compensation went to the slave owners, who because of that compensation put extra effort into catching escaped slaves so they could claim it. And even then, we didn't really free those slaves, with them being subject to all sorts of arrangements to keep them working at the same plantations.

That said, you are right that the descendants of those (eventually freed) slaves only really made it to Europe in the 20th century in any real numbers, and even then they're easily outnumbered here in the Netherlands by immigrants from rural Turkey and Morocco who came to alleviate labour shortages in the post-war economy.

Oh yeah, definitely a good point... I'll admit I'm a pretty sheltered suburbanite (raised pretty much straight-up middle class - the 80's/90's version of it) but I've seen my share of minorities born with a silver spoon in their mouth, and dirt-poor white people. I think that if you tell someone "you are privileged because you're white" it can also backfire and make people more resentful (especially if the person has had a hard-knock life).

When they talk about white privilege, they are not talking about income. Even if you've met well off minorities, what do most white people think of when they see a minority? A few years ago a guy was arrested for trying to get into his own home because he was black. What is the thought process that goes on here? What would happen if he were white? That is white privilege.

Well, the point of elucidating this phenomenon is not necessarily to attempt to illustrate that it's universally applicable in the sense that each and every straight, white guy has it better than everyone else across the board. But, in the general sense, we do.

Meaning, all things equal, I benefit more from being a straight white guy than (insert other demographic  here) benefits from their identity.
