Yeah, I searched for 'therealphoenixdark'. Working now.

Also, thanks again to the mods for getting rid of the trash. In the last 6 months the worst Ninthings are slowly getting assassinated one by one, only Marc o, HylianTom and a few others remain. Get rid of those and GAF will be a much more tolerable forum when it comes to Nintendo discussion.

the classism of America is well buried underneath issues of race

Americans like to think they're beyond classism, something they escaped by leaving Europe, but issues of class are real and not talked about much.
That's pretty odd, given the evidence anyone sees of class (struggle) every day, regardless of the country they're in. You would have to do a lot of ignoring to keep deluding yourself.

The reality is that everyone in America thinks they're middle class even if they're struggling to pay the bills.

And don't even get me started on how people have been brainwashed into thinking unions and worker rights are either bad or luxuries.

unfortunately, this seems to be the complete and utter truth, anecdotally speaking. i have some friends from hs who work two/three jobs and barely make more than 20K/yr, and yet they insist that they "are not poor" because they "work and work all the time, and poor people are lazy and live off the government." basically, there's this weird unexamined notion that you aren't poor in america if you work hard, and you are really just part of the "struggling middle-class" instead. they'll tell me, "i got a decent truck and this laptop, and i go to the bar every weekend, i definitely ain't poor and you're rich asshole to even suggest it" to which i point out that they're below the federal poverty line, and they go "oh, well, that's what the government says, and that's just something the liberals make up to support their gubmint programs." JESUS HELL YOU SAD BASTARDS.

(on the other hand, ANY attempt by a librul to get them to see the larger picture is treated as sanctimonious gladhanding from a cultural enemy pushing political snake oil, and will ALWAYS get rejected.)

basically, "poor" equals "someone you look down upon." they believe the only folks who look down on them are LIBRULS, who are by nature wrong about everything, and the very rich. therefore, they are middle class, because they themselves look down on the quasi-mythical "lazy welfare monkeys." :derp

well, they're ULTIMATELY really afraid and angry about cultural contradictions from liberal political values. any attempt to help them is the sugar coating that ultimately leads to them swallowing the  snake oil that lets the bogeymen take control: public mockery of the christian faith; secular schools teaching the sins of the rural tribe; little babies gettin' murdered in their mommies' tummies; NO MOAR GUNZ.

what they really need, more than anything else, is a reprieve from their miserable economic existences and the endless nebulous pressures and stresses that define their lives and cause them to a) circle in with the tribe for mutual defense; and b) latch onto perceived "obvious" cultural threats so they don't have to address the real ones. most of them can overcome their tribal bigotry and move to more tolerant, compromising, integration-friendly places when they aren't SCARED FUCKING SHITLESS by the media and their churches.

This talk is one of the main reasons I've kind of given up on America. I know it sounds dumb to say so, but I kind of have. Not saying these problems don't happen elsewhere in the world, either. Can't wait to visit New Zealand later this year. After grad school I'm leaving the states, temporarily or permanent, I see that as the greatest form of protest.

When my mom was only making minimum wage at KFC (and was separated from my father) in the middle 90s (so minimum wage was $3-4 an hour at the time I believe) and had to depend on free lunches and subsidized child care at school, she considered us middle class or in her words "in the middle of the middle class."  She drove a beater Mercury Topaz that seeped exhaust in the interior and we lived in a tiny dumpy apartment.  Yet to her, we were in the middle of the middle class.

It's very much an ostrich head in the sand type of pride.  Most people don't want to admit that they're poor and up shit's creek without a paddle because due to decades of right wing indoctrination, being poor = lazy and needing a helping hand (whether private charity or government) = extreme laziness.  So let's just call ourselves middle class instead!

I think the only thing saving us from total destitution was the school programs, like $5 a day child care and free breakfast and lunches (if you applied).  I know the child care thing went away years ago to fund a soccer park that didn't amount to shit and is now considered gang territory.

I haven't given up, but I do plan on seriously considering moving at some point. I was never really tied to the idea of living in one country my whole life anyways, so this would just be one part of it. That's years off though, gotta graduate and find some kind of stability after that.

I didn't say I was going to emigrate this year, though. Who would emigrate without visiting, anyways? that's fucking stupid. Truth is, I've never really been outside of the US, and the USA is so big I've always been able to travel within our borders just fine without the need to leave the country. But I want to travel outside of the USA. I want to start at NZ/Oz, then visit UK and Yurop, and Africa down the line sometime. But my biggest hard on is China. I want to visit so bad.

I'm pretty sure the part T EXP was calling bullshit on was the " After grad school I'm leaving the states", not the "I'm going to visit another country for a vacation" part.

In any case, this is a cultural misunderstanding.  As an American, you think it's a big deal that you've "signed up for a passport", since only about 20% of Americans have one.   Whereas, for us well-travelled folks in Soviet Canuckistan, 64 % of the population has a valid passport.  So as a Canadian, I just think it's quaint that you defend yourself with "of course I'm serious, I've put in for a passport."  :)

But when we get fed up with our own country and talk about how, "I'm just going to move to (New Zealand/Canada/France/Japan) and get away from all this!" we tend to talk like the hardest part is buying the plane ticket.

But the majority of Americans who plan on leaving their country seem to assume that the hardest part of leaving is deciding which country to go to, like it's the same as planning a vacation

The problem here is that not only do America's problems also exist in other countries, a lot of the time they're actually worse. Is the American criminal justice system getting you down? Escape to France, where prisoners have been reduced to eating rats and get to shower twice a week -- oh yeah, and this was inside a prison where only half of the inmates had been convicted of anything. Or Japan, where they can hold you for 23 days without trial in a "substitute prison," while relentlessly interrogating you and depriving you of sleep and food, a system that has led to an extremely high rate of false confessions.

Hate American rednecks' racism and xenophobia? French Muslims are 2.5 times less likely to get called back after job interviews than non-Muslim applicants with similar qualifications, and Italy, Spain and the U.K. have all had race riots recently.

The thing about other countries prisons in that article is factually incorrect.

In Canada there is essentially no offence for which you won't make bail.  In Winnipeg, we just released a serial killer on bail, and in Alberta, a guy charged in the shooting of two cops.   :-\

Have you read it? He makes a bunch of claims, such as the prison system in Europe being worse than America's, that people universally hate Americans (when this depends on the person and the country), that if you do emigrate you will only hang out with other Americans. It has very little basis on facts and only services the authors own opinions, especially considering he himself is an immigrant who probably worships America.

Just walk across the border at Niagara Falls pretending to be from Nigeria fleeing oppression and claim refugee status.  That'll buy you at least two years in the country.

Hey, if you feel like you need to go to another country, then do what you need to do.

It's just that if I had a dime for every time I've read about some person wanting to leave the US, or hell, even from you Himuro, and then not go through with it, I could probably retire overseas myself :lol

You are an engineer with over 100k in your bank. Any country with a brain would want you right fucking now. In fact, Oz and NZ have a huge shortage in that area and you could easily get a visa if you applied for it without any effort.

Himu lets go live in Berlin. I'll be the best roommate ever!

Awesome beer, kinky bitches and culture!

How much German you know?

Canada is too hard to emigrate to, though?

Just walk across the border at Niagara Falls pretending to be from Nigeria fleeing oppression and claim refugee status.  That'll buy you at least two years in the country.

That sounds nice and legal!

Eh.

Germany DOES have a population problem, though.

Another point that makes the article Rumbler posted even more stupid. There are a lot of countries with population problems that are turning to immigrants and have vastly under performing sectors. Germany, Australia, and New Zealand are some of them. The point that "governments don't want you" is a crock of shit. Shit article.

In college there was a German guy who said I'd be popular there. I'm not sure in what way he meant that.

We lived in student housing while my dad was in grad school, then were rather poor during his residency. After that we kind of jumped from being poor to middle class then a bit above that. I'm friends with a lot of people who are still stuck in low income situations, yet they spend and portray themselves as middle class - and some even talk shit about my parents. One time a family we were close to visited our house shortly after we moved to the suburbs, and I remember their parents literally laughing at us having one of the smallest house on the street. Of course, they've been living in the same apartment for like 20 years and are black republicans :violin

Ultimately people want to advertise and view themselves in the best possible light. There are plenty of hard working "poor" people who have nothing to be ashamed of, but a lot of people see the term "poor" and automatically assume that means lazy, welfare, ignorant, etc.

Don't know the context, but it's probably the only time in history that someone looked cool using a computer.

I dunno, I get kinda turned on when I'm at a coffeeshop or something and there's a woman next to me working intensely on her laptop. If she's leaning forward and typing quickly & precisely, that really does it for me.

This is how I browse the net, although without crossed legs. Not being Bowie it probably doesn't look as effortless, all hunched over and straining to keep upright.
