What is disgusting about a debate around gun control?

That it's happening in that thread barely an hour after the event. People have no shame. There's gun control threads for that sort of thing.

I'm still not putting together why that is disgusting to be honest. I'll just let it go since I suspect this to be an American thing I'll never get.

Because people have died, and instead of having them in your thoughts, you bring up a debate that has been discussed time and time again. We have these debates every time  a shooting occurs. It gets pretty old, and the fact that people do it because of public shootings without a thought of all the people who have died without the news reporting it is disgusting. It's manipulative, reactionary, and at this point, hardly relevant. These bodies aren't even cold, they just died no less than an hour ago, and people bring up gun control? And you don't find this disgusting how?

I'm not sure I agree really, people want to debate a potential way of stopping all these killings. I believe respecting people that died in tragedies takes the form of preventing it from happening easily again.

Also mods on GAF have this terrible attitude where they want to insulate themselves from discussing moderation policy. Opening a sort of "Help Desk" section where people can openly ask moderators questions re policy and of gaf itself would go a long way. At neoGAF's churn rate they cant give a fuck though

Stay consistent - That is exactly right.
This example is inconsistent as you could have got away with it every other day of the week. Informing users of changes/tightening of rules via banning is a pretty horrible practice.

It's relevant. And if it stems from a genuine concern over the high frequency of gun violence and a desire to curb it, I don't see how it's at all tasteless. What else is there to say? "What a terrible tragedy, how do we prevent it?"

GAF's always had a policy of banning those who don't read the OPs, and in the cases of those posts, they might as well not have read the OP or actually didn't, so I think the bans are justified. They don't add anything, and are basically the inflammatory equivalent of "tl;dr."

I wish GAF would become more like Hacker News in trying to cultivate meaningful discussion, but that might chase away dem ad dollas.

There have been a bunch of threads about Breivik's trial on GAF and they each have had people explaining the Norwegian justice system and what the sentencing would entail: effectively that he's in there for life. Yet somehow that isn't enough to deter the swarm of drooling imbeciles going "21 years WTF this shit is broken?" I mean it's actually upsetting me a bit.

this shit has been so silly. It's been obvious since day 1 that he would get 21 + containment. It's also obvious the containment will not end until he dies. I hope the media circus surrounding this case will die down soon. Prolly have a good six months more to give though.

I don't believe I ever wondered why people read GAF. It's a great forum with sometimes pretty insightful and fun talk about games. I also enjoy reading about things I like even if their views don't align with mine. While I sure can be aggressive about things it's still very interesting to read why people don't like or like something. And since GAF had a large pool of posters you got many viewpoints and most of the time they were pretty cool to read. I love MGS4 threads, because I'm always trying to find out why people like that game. FFXIII threads were fun because reading peoples views on the series and what they liked about it was insightful. I mean I never thought my gaming taste were not normal and thought I liked up with the general consensus, turns out the "hardcore" gaming community is pretty insane. it was also a place for pretty cool news and just general knowledge about games. Learned about a lot of obscure Japanese games that I have tracked down, bought, played, and well either liked or hated.

Now I can't say I was a great poster, but I sure wasn't wrong. At least when it came to my opinions.

Anyway that's my peace. If you have a problem with me I don't care. I'm over whining about GAF because whatever. I don't have time for it and hopefully this is the last over dramatic post I make on the subject(This GAF thread is poison for my rep, I should just stick to pointless posts in the gaming part like usual) If you don't like me, I understand. I'm a whinny bitch, but whatever.  I'm sure eventually I'll leave the bore when I get tired of posting either way. Until then I guess I will post and it won't be insightful, but it will be there.
