The thread's a fanboy nexus, everyone over exaggerates how funny that stuff is because they're carried away with excitement.  The same will happen with the next XBox thread, at least to some degree.  It seems like GAF has a higher concentration of Sony partisans than any other platform.

Also, I'm sure there are at least a few guerrilla marketers at work in there.  Any time a "change your avatar to fit hot new release X" trend appears I assume it's the work of marketers.
