Killzone 3 Open Beta
« on: February 03, 2011, 02:20:11 PM »
Live on the US PSN store now.

No more per-pixel motion blur. Worse framerate than Killzone 2.

That's what MOVE and 3D gets ya!

what is it with dark10x and his blatant love for sony? the guy is ultra picky about graphics and fps unless its something he is biased to.

What in the fuck, Guerrilla? Again?

Oh, come on, it's hardly a big deal. A small hiccup here and there for an otherwise seamless experience?

lol, a small hickup on a non sony fps and the guy would be shredding the game to pieces.

dark10x can't tolerate a PC game that dips to 59 FPS but he is able to live with sub 30 FPS PS3 games.  It must be awesome having the ability of cognitive dissonance.  :bow2

That Killzone beta thread is hilarious. Most of them seem to hate the MP now because they didn't take their advice on how to make the game.

Quote
Seems like the previous "closed beta" was just a big marketing ploy. Should have just called it an early demo or something because I don't see much change.. Framerate is better but still gets shaky, sounds are greatly improved. I don't see any reason to ever use ADS. Connecting to the initial server takes a couple tries because it can get stuck on "connecting.." and my first match froze while loading the map. Some beta.

Why have a beta and ask for feedback if you're not going to implement consider any of it? Oh that's right the Sony PR guy with "accessibility and $$$$" tattooed to his balls is strong arming you. The campaign better be good because I don't see this multiplayer sticking either, it'll die out just like Killzone 2's did.

Quote
What a disaster of a MP this is.

Take a bow Guerilla.

They really are an amateur bunch when it comes to making good games. The MP is all style, no substance.

The previous beta was bad and this doesn't seem to feel any different. Have they not listened to our fucking feedback? I posted so much on their shitty little forum and they appeared to have ignored it all whilst retaining every bit of the CODness this game has. I fail to see the elements which made KZ2 so good in this game.

The single player looks fantastic but the direction the MP is taking looks awful.

I'll probably buy the game but will immediately sell once I have enough from the SP campaign.

Have GG implemented any of Lince's suggestions?

If you manage to get into a 16 player game (good luck connecting) the framerate goes between 15 and 20fps.

Someone plz ask dark10x to come back.  I miss needling him about his selective nitpicking and him conceding that I'm the ultimate graphics whore.

Quote
what is it with dark10x and his blatant love for sony? the guy is ultra picky about graphics and fps unless its something he is biased to.

Whilst this should be in the DRAMA thread in OT, this should have been spotted by everyone a long time ago. Either you are a hardcore graphics frame rate player across all platforms or you are just another fanboy. Simple as that really - can't have per-platform standards once you attach to frame rates.

It's not just frame rates.  dark10x basically adjusts whatever standards he has to suit his pro-Sony arguments.  He makes a big deal about recent PS3 exclusives having 80 lines of extra resolution over 360 exclusives.  But when it comes to PS3 vs PC, then he claims that the massive boost in image quality that a PC offers over a PS3, doesn't make a big difference on a good TV.  Like I said before, dark10x is still my boy but he'll always be a disgusting sfag.

People may accuse me of being just as biased but at least my tech standards have always been consistent.  1920x1200, max settings, 16xAA, 16xAF or GTFO

I downloaded and only played with bots.

Move controls are great if you like how Wii shooters control.  I played more than a few on the Wii, including the "best" The Conduit, which, actually has bad controls even after spending the time with the dozens of options;  Red Steel 2 or Metroid Prime 3 have the best.  Killzone 3 is probably the best pointer controls, but it requires tricking the calibration process to get it to feel right.  You need to aim more towards the side or height than the actual icon, and other than that, it keeps things simple and the only thing I'd like is a smaller deadzone.

So, yeah.  Nice pointer controls here.  I downloaded the beta to do two things: try the pointer controls and try sliding.  There doesn't seem to be sliding in multiplayer, since I guess there is no cover system.  Should have played the Trill Zeyn 3 japan game demo instead.

I'm sure Killzone is fine for what its worth.

It's just they have the worst fanboys and base in the world backing their game. You can never tell them anything is wrong with that game. No matter what. They are the first fanbase I've ever seen that tried to transform actual input lag in a game to a good positive thing. You can't have a reasonable discussion with the worst of them. That's why that video is mostly funny. They are a mix of game warriors and system warriors.

played some with bots to try out move controls, i agree with linkzg

i'll probably enjoy the single player more than i would have without using the move, but i will never play a multiplayer game using it unless they separate players out using a "move only" matchmaking or something similar

turning is just too slow and awkward, no matter what sensitivity setting, and i don't think anyone will ever be able to fix that problem in a motion controlled fps

I ended up playing this for a couple hours today.  Easy to get a 16 player match and it runs fairly smoothly.  The main problem is the map is too fucking cluttered.  There is no effort made to give the game any kind of clean look.  There are lights everywhere and shit in the air and everything just sort of blends together.  Couple this with the obnoxious "your health is low so the screen goes blurry" effect and you'll end up raging at the screen.  Weapon balance is way off (the shotgun can string together 10 kill streaks easily, while the big long range guns are fucking useless).  Not the worst game ever like some would have you believe, and leagues better than KZ2, but mostly "eh".

i agree with this, too

i think this is a problem with a lot of modern fps games, too much distracting shit flying in your face all the time

The current implementation of motion controls on the Wii and the PS 3 in FPS games will never be anything more than a small niche of people. For regular people it feels too awkward and your hands get tired from holding the motion controller in that way for extended periods. Its not like a mouse or a dual analog where you can easily rest your hands to combat fatigue.

Maybe that gun motion controller will be better with it although I think you would still run into the same problem.

i was resting my arm in my lap and it worked fine that way, you're really just directing a cursor in these games since they can never really have true 1:1 control due to the micro-lag (which is always going to be a factor)

which is also why i think the gun, while neat-looking, is kind of pointless

pushing the screen around to turn always sucks in every single fps i have ever played, though

yeah, I just kinda lounge around and it isn't a too much of an issue.  The wii is a bit annoying because you have to point it at the screen, but the move all based on motions, so you can just set it up to just work from other positions.  The biggest issues is finding a balance between turning and aiming, and I don't think they've figured that out yet.  I mean, ideally you want to just point and shoot, but if an enemy is towards the edge of the screen and you point at his head, the screen starts turning and you're no longer aiming there.

Killzone 3 has a neat idea where the second you move it back to the middle, the screen stops turning and it sets a new deadzone.  If you imagine the screen being a giant circle, most Wii shooters have a static circle with a gradient of turning speed along it.  Killzone 3 moves that circle, making it so you can aim towards the top right of the screen without the camera panning right.

That and you need to move your hand too much to turn the screen.  The reasons given for why the Move doesn't have an analog stick was that it would require too much thinking to manage turning and aiming at the same time (for the player) but I would have liked to have seen that as an option.  Time Crisis 4 did it and it wasn't too hard.

I'm sure this is cool and all, but there are way and again too many good shooters coming up, many of which have something interesting going for them. Maybe if they can show off some more interesting environments, but right now it seems like they haven't managed to match KZ1 there. Odd how that one actually had a good campaign, wicked weapons and kick ass environments, but it was at the same time broken as hell.

Also, Resistance MP :rock

He changed his stance shortly afterward; still not in love with the controls, but is no longer completely trashing them.

Played the beta on friday at a friend's house. Pretty graphics, weighty controls=meh. But then again, I'm not a fan of console shooter controls in general.

I play some Killzone 3 multiplayer online last night and it was honestly giving me a headache.  Very few games give me that problem.  I don't think it will be a problem in single player, but I can't play multiplayer and spin around without feeling nauseous.

I only played a bit of Killzone 2 online, and while I thought the idea of rotating game types within the same map is an awesome idea, I kept thinking that I'd rather play CoD4 and remembered how much I'd want MW2.  Playing KZ3 makes me want to play Black Ops or Bad Company 2, and makes me realize how much I want to play Battlefield 3.

I just want something like Another World, but open world RPG game

Sure, the graphics are pretty but the level design is so restrictive.  I know that almost every shooter has artificial borders but they are especially noticeable in this game.  This aspect alone kills dark10x's argument that Killzone is on par technically with Crysis.

Has he actually said that? Seems like a clumsy argument. Actual output is one thing; the ice shelf stuff they have shown is more striking than anything in Crysis no matter what the configuration, but yeah, it's all in a controlled frame.

Either way, that jungle has a lot of color.

Video of that snow level you're talking about?

Crysis' visuals definitely have been surpassed in certain aspects by newer games, at least artistically.  For example, the guns in Crysis have inferior detail to the Killzone ones.  The precision scope view is also better in Killzone.  However, when you look at the overall picture, Crysis is still tops.  There's just nothing with so much scope and dynamics that is even close to looking this good.  The detail is simply amazing when you look at how much room there is to run around in each level.

Either way, that jungle has a lot of color.

But for some reason, organic color almost always seems to be a bit off in heavily post-processed, CG-like games like this.  It's the same way with Gears and many UE3 games.

You can download the single player demo now if you pay for Playstation Plus...or go to the Hong Kong PSN and download it for free (both the regular and 3D version).

It was alright.  Not really digging shooter like this right now so I was getting bored near the end, but the jetpack bit was fun, and in general it feels better than Killzone 2.  Still is a bit claustrophobic even in the larger areas, like you're running into railings and stuff as if you're guy is wearing a giant hoolahoop.

The "beta" looks really good.  Gotta give Guerilla credit for the job they did with the visuals.  The assets and level designs highlight exactly what the PS3 is good at and hide what it's weak at.  I'm gonna bust out Killzone 2 again and see if the patches made it more playable.  K3 is definitely on my list now.  I might not get it at $60 but I'll probably jump at $40.

the kz3 sp demo was sooo hot  :o

perfect controls that managed to balance the feel of the original while making it far more accessible. i still perfer the feel of kz2 but whatever. i haven't played too much of the beta, but the guns defiantly had more oomph to them where the beta feels a little too much like cod, or maybe that's because they made shooting higs incredibly awarding. i'm not sure what most of gaf is bitching about, but being a closet kz2 lover, i feel that even with the changes, kz3 hasn't lost too much of its identity... though they're starting to push it towards a more campy scifi tone with the jet packs and all the other shit they've shown in the trailers. oh well... not like i'll care for the story. as long as it'll drive the game along to some awesome set pieces.

Gamespot podcast said that K3's story really hurts the game because it's not only bad but also really intrusive.  Oh well, I'm only gonna play it casually as a tech demo anyway.

I don't really get why it is so hard to make a story that isn't terrible in an FPS/TPS.  It's not like these games need deep plots.  You just base it off an summer action movie where there are BAD GUYS and they HAVE THE BOMB and you chase them and take them out in spectacular setpieces and stuff.  I enjoy the plots in IW CoD games because they are very very simple and give me a bad guy to shoot.  They aren't good plots, but they don't bring the gameplay down with terrible plotting.

Instead you get stuff like Killzone2, Resistance 2, Gears 2 (oh hey they all have 2s) where the plots don't make any sense and are just nonsense craptacular.  KZ3 sounds like this again.  I get the feeling they try to make this GRAND EPIC PLOTLINE and write it all out on the design doc, then by the end of the game they've had to cut half the levels they originally planned and suddenly they're missing half the plot and what's remaining is a total mess.

:lol the single player demo is only 20 minutes or so and has no less than five cut scenes

it's completely jarring - and yes, they all suck (and most of them are unnecessary)

dialogue is terrible, lots of fucks and shits and cliches

there is one part at the opening bit of the demo where, after a ship crashes, the two main characters are lying in the debris and loudly groaning in a hilariously melodramatic fashion

it sounds, no lie, like they are fucking each other

as for the game itself - looks pretty, controls well with the move dildo, jetpack is kinda neat, but all in all a base level shooter all the way
