Radiant Historia is a classic RPG that manages to feel brand new, with a unique battle system and a multi-faceted time travel mechanic. While the story can drag at times, and reliving certain moments over and over can be tiring, it is ultimately a wonderful game that all RPG enthusiasts should make it a point to check out.

Finally, while Radiant Historia does a nice job of dancing just outside the now tired JRPG tropes, one does rear its ugly head a few too many times. Be prepared for the whole boss-after-a-boss thing, multiple times. I'm pretty certain that no one falls for the scene where you thought you killed a boss only to find that it's not quite dead, or is going to evolve into something stronger. We stopped falling for that in the 1990s, didn't we? The creators of this game didn't get that memo. There were a few instances that bordered on annoying with the bosses not dying. In one boss-after-a-boss instance toward the end I screamed "Are you serious?!" at my DS in public and embarrassed myself.

Don't let these small issues discourage you from trying out this rich, developed time-travel RPG. There's a lot of fun to be had here, and the story wraps up very nicely, making for a great reward for all of that time bouncing. It's not often that we see a DS RPG with this level of creativity and polish in the story and gameplay departments, and the fantastic music and art only accentuate that. Even if you think you've done the time-travel RPG before, you should still definitely play Radiant Historia.

Its usually not out until Tuesdays... unless it gets dumped early. But I'm interested in it, having seen zero impressions and videos on it.

It seems unique/fresh in some ways that is why i want it.  Hopefully it lives up to what the reviewers say.

i gave this one a quick spin and i'm split,on one hand i really like the character art,a good chunk of the music and the whole time travel gimmick....

on the other the whole game feels very low budget, with it's dull 3D enviroments and tiny ugly 2D sprites and the battle just seems gimmicky for gimmick sake (like persona 3 one more system) rather than "unique" tough i really like the idea that you can pass your turn so that you can chain more attack in a single row, while i do like the time travel gimmick it feels very limited,a lot of the decision you make just lead to bad ends and sometimes the game stops you and straightly tell you "GO BACK AND PICK THE OTHER DECISION!" heck at that point why make me decide at all?

but even with those it still feel like a quite interessing game

you know i can't help but think that himuro would love this game, some bits of the plot kinda remind me of suikoden

Just finished the game.  I loved it even though whenever you go back to a node you are always treated to about 30 seconds of text fast-forwarded. Something to fix for the sequel if they ever do it.

i don't think there has ever been a game where the idea of "high concept, low budget" was so freaking evident, this would have been REALLY REALLY REALLY good if it had a bit polish but instead you can see they had to make lot of concessions... this mean going trough the same boring looking plain 2-3 times because the plot demand so,having to fight almost exclusively different recolors of the same soldier guy, spending waaaaaaaaaaaaay more time talking trough the plot than going trough dungeons and stuff and having horrible tiny sprites on dull looking 3D enviroment

the fact that the game has actualy 2 plot going around is a really awesome idea tough i wish those would be able to branch into more mini-plot

as i said i'm 100% sure that any suikofan like himuro would love this, the plot is all war intrigues and conspiracies,i like the main character especialy,he come across as stoic instead of the "I SHALL PROTECT MY FRIEND!" breed that usualy swarms jrpg,in short it's what you probably wanted when you bought suikoden tiekresis instead of that lame "DESTINY!" bullshit

I love how I picked one choice, and the game basically said "the army got powerful and you lost. the end."

yea that's what i mean when i says i wished it would branch... i understand that the game has to have dead-ends but let them play out instead of going "SINCE YOU PICKED THIS,THE HERO DIDN'T SAVE THE WORLD AND EVERYBODY DIED, THE END,NOW GO PICK THE OTHER CHOICE"

the game forces you to jump between the 2 story-lines demi, sometimes to proceed in storyline 1,you need to do something in storyline 2 and viceversa

bump for Magus... glad you are back on board. Game is hot.

I'm in Chapter 6 for both histories. Started my assault on Granorg, after giving Will the Sand Sword, etc. to get the Etherion for the other history.

Aht is OP man. I decimate bosses in a few taps because of her.

My main party - Stocke, Raynie, Aht

I have a slight idea where the story will head, but I'm still curious to learn more. So far it hasnt exactly delved into DERP territory yet.

yea, traps are overpowered, when i fought the spider (SSSHHHH DON'T TELL ANYBODY THIS GAME HAS SPIDERS) my first reaction was like "what? no place to put traps around! well fuck! :-\"

i'm not really sticking to a party, different characters fares better in different situations but yea raynie poison attack is very usefull,so it's either raynie or gafka since his attack is so high if he's avaiable

the character with the gun has a very usefull skill set but her defense is so low she dies as soon as she gets looked wrong :S
