I was viciously against it leading up to its release, but upon actually playing it I enjoyed it (but would not admit it to anyone). I got up to the Sky Dungeon before I just lost interest. Great game, just a really slow intro (almost as bad as KH2) and I could've done without the wolf parts (wolf controls are :yuck)

Only thing I remember from that dungeon is that sick-ass boss fight where you're on your little beyblade thing.

i loved every single bit of this game and it was my goty the year it came out.

the "lol people love the last zelda game now that there's a new one" mass circle jerk is fucking stupid because it throws entire fanbases under one giant bus as if opinions on the internet are all one entity.

in other words, they're people who hold stock in people's opinions so much they can't fucking think for themselves.

it has it's boring moment (the goat catching starts, everytime you get turned into a wolf and have to gets those tears of light...) but i liked it,even if it opens with the classic forest/fire/water later on it starts being more inventive and some of the items rocks (chain ball :bow2)

it was a time when the release of a decent wii game wasn't some world stopping event :'(

also fuck you guys who keep posting gerudo valley everytime i say zelda music sucks! this is the real deal!

Never played it.  But then I have never been able to get into the 3D Zelda games.

One day I will try the game, if I can get the GC version with its proper non-waggle controls.

Or I could just play Okami instead.

-Story starts off kind of strong with seemingly interesting and involved characters, but falls apart a little over halfway through.
-Wolf portions are horrendous.
-Graphics can be great at times, but usually inconsistent with muddy textures.
-Unrewarding side quests

+Awesome dungeons, probably the best for all 3D Zeldas (especially Arbiter's Grounds -most awesome new item in a Zelda game ever -and the Sky Temple)
+Some great locales like Zora's Domain and the Palace of Twilight.

Fuck. Is that all the positives I can think of? I was sure there was more.

I think I stopped after I beat the forest temple and it was asking me to collect golden bugs in the twilight realm as the wolf for the first time.  I hated the dogshit art style, meek music, ugly unappealing npcs, the slow ass pacing, and the werewolf gimmick. This is actually in the category of bad waggle games.  To sustain a sword combo you literally just waggled continuously while the onscreen slashes never matched your rhythm.  The pointer stuff is great of course although the persistent fairy was stupid.

So yeah, maybe I just didnt get far enough, but you know, if I don't like a game in the first few hours I'm not going to wait for it to get better.   Glad I just borrowed it from my brother and never wasted any money on it.

Skyward sword looks really good though.

edit: I also wanna say that this and Wind Waker are very obtrusive with their stories.  If they want to have some lame attempt at Zelda Mythos they need to take a note from the Metroid Prime series and make it behind a switch that weirdos looking for a plot have to go looking for.

Skyward Sword, to me, looks like a cheap Zelda knock off so far. I don't know what it is about it, but it just looks that way to me.

I'm pretty sure a good trailer would make it look better to me.

Skyward sword excites me because I think they finally understand what has plagued 3d zelda since ocarina- Tons of unused space.  Their talks of the game mention the merging of field and dungeon (I wonder if they are going to go with a labyrinth design like Metroid games).  Pacing should be massively improved by the sprint button, 3d zelda often feels slow and its hard to go back to Majora and Ocarina because of it.  Motion controls look fun and will have practical applications.   The artstyle isn't composed of dog shit textures.  The little musical bits I've heard so far are catchy.  Phantom Hourglass director is directing this one. I just have a good feeling about this.

No, you're both right and wrong. Yes it's the director of the Oracle games, the same man who also directed PH and ST. All three games were worked on by that team somewhat simultaneously.

Yup, this. The dungeon design is fantastic and although the overworld gets some flack, it's far, far better than WW and OOT's. Boss fights are also some of the best in 3D Zelda. It's just a shame the start is so slow (herding sheep, wtf?)

I liked the game, particularly the awesome character designs, but agree the pacing was off.  The start was too slow, then the end was too fast where I was just doing dungeons back-to-back.  The middle was good.

Join the club, I still get hyped for every new RPG yet it's been over ten years since I actually played one, aside from a few DS games. Now I usually just listen to the soundtrack and watch a few YouTube clips, maybe skim a FAQ, and that's good enough. The last RPG I played on a console was FF9 in 2000.

Back-to-back mediocre Zelda games that were worked on in tandem with this game by the same team. Nintendo's track record this gen of pissing in their fans' mouths and calling it lemonade. I could come up with some more but I'm too lazy.

I wasn't too impressed, too much of the same with some ugly graphics and crummy wolf parts thrown in. It had some highlights and I did beat it but I much preferred Wind Waker.

I loved Mario Galaxy (and 2) so at least the Wii hasn't been a complete and total waste  :-\

Zelda ONe is  obtuse in that dated NES way
OoT is boring and I genuinely can't ever get through it again, also hyrule field is do nothing but walk.
Twilight Princess is unfab and fugly and more of a chore than anything
Wind Waker runs out of steam way too quickly and doesn't flesh out its ideas enough.

I would put Phantom Hourglass above any of those.  As a matter of fact I feel like Phantom Hourglass is a complete realisation of the goals they set out to do in Wind Waker.  It has more substantial islands with indigenous populations, creative item usage, the ocean itself has numerous activities to do whilst sailing, so it doesn't feel empty and lacking.  I loved the cartography stuff.  The dungeons themselves weren't tedious slogs like I remember many of the 3d zeldas being.  They were briskly paced yet satisfying.

I have not played enough of Link to the Past, Zelda 2, the Oracle games, Minish Cap or Spirit Tracks to have an opinion on them.  Otherwise the only zelda games I enjoy returning to are Link's Awakening, Phantom Hourglass, and Majora's Mask.
sad

Zelda 1 is fine so long as remember where to go and what to do and even then it's not hard getting into as it's a very simplistic game. If you need help, use a map.
OoT's hyrule field is only a problem as child link. but when you get the spells that let you teleport across the map, I see no problem. not to mention epona.
TP has pacing issues, but gets awesome real quick and I fail to see how any self proclaimed Zelda fan has any issue getting into once dungeon 3 rolls around.
Wind Waker fleshes out its ideas perfectly fine. It's lacking in dungeons but where it lacks in dungeons it makes up for in sidequests and adventure and exploration.

just sounds like usual cherry picking from emcee to me.

then again, this seems to be mostly in comparison to phantom hourglass, which I've barely spent any time on.

Cherry-picking? I try to go back and play Ocarina.  Start to get bored out of my mind with how sluggish and slow it all is.  Try to stick with it.  Give up.  Hyrule field is one bulletpoint in a list of reasons that I can't play that game anymore.  Maybe its all the story integration too.  I DONT CARE DEKU TREE ABOUT THE EVIL GUY LET ME INSIDE YOU.

I find that modern games coddle the player too much personally. OoT gives hints but you tend to solve the problems on your own.

Wii is 16:9, but controls are waggle-only.  Cube is 4:3 but has real controls.  Also both versions' maps are mirrored from each other, IIRC.

wii controls are really good. the only problem with the wii controls are the occasional move that's hard to pull off (shield bash mainly) but all moves are easy to get a handle on and the controls come natural after just a few minutes of play and aren't tiring at all. Arrow shooting and fishing, even swordplay are enhanced greatly due to the wiimote.

Include widescreen mode and you get your superior version.

The one problem with the wii version is that there's no controllable camera but this never gets in the way of the game's design.

TP.

If you think 3d Zelda is slow don't bother with Okami. It goes on and on and on and on and on and never ends. Could use 20 hours of trimming and lacks the dungeon design of TP.

Okami Story
Soon, Amaterasu, along with Susano, must battle Orochi to protect Kamiki Village and rescue Susano's beloved, Kushi, recreating events from 100 years prior. This time, the duo are able to fully conquer the demon, causing a black, evil spirit to float northward. Amaterasu and Issun then embark on a journey across Nippon, befriending many people along the way through their good deeds, and continue to remove Orochi's curse on the land, through defeating other demons that release similar dark presences floating northward.

Amaterasu travels to find the source of these evil spirits, she is brought to the wreckage of a ship able to travel through the stars: the "Ark of Yamato", in the frozen plains of Kamui. Waka appears and reveals himself as a member of the Moon Tribe, a race that had supplied the Ark of Yamato to the Celestial Beings, who used it to escape from Orochi's assault on the Celestial Plain and sail the heavens, unaware of the evil spirits imprisoned on the Ark which attacked and killed all but himself, resulting in the Ark crashing to earth. Yami, the demon controlling all of the evil spirits, appears and strips Amaterasu of her Celestial Brush powers before entering battle with her. Issun takes up his role as the Celestial Envoy and encourages all those they have helped to send their thoughts to Amaterasu, causing her to regain her powers and defeat Yami, ridding both the Ark and Nippon of these evil beings forever. With her mission done, Amaterasu departs with Waka on the Ark to sail back to the Celestial Plain together
