Dominicans are some confused people
« on: March 09, 2011, 04:23:47 AM »
This one Dominican laborer at work started fussing with HR regarding his ethnic status on his personnel file. Apparently, he learned that someone in HR designated him as "Black" on his paperwork, as opposed to "Hispanic," and he didn't approve. Now, I'm not one to defend my company's human resources department because they're a pain the ass, but this is ridiculous. And what's worse, this isn't the first time I've heard of this...

Dominicans, particularly dark-skinned ones like this guy, are BLACK, yet some of them insist that they're Latino in the official sense. Why? I don't know. Either it's a cultural plot to disassociate themselves with their OBVIOUS African lineage or because they assume knowing the Spanish tongue exonerates them from the Black label, which is foolish since, under such an erroneous basis, dark-skinned Haitians can just as easily claim to be White due to their French background. These Brown-washed assholes probably also think they could have walked into any racist establishment in the 60s and be immediately excused from the old "NO NI*****S ALLOWED" policy because they're among the unfortunate few who can understand Pitbull's rapping. NEWSFLASH - you wouldn't have gone in not due to your breath smelling like Brugal; you wouldn't have gone in because YOU'RE BLACK!

If you have a Dominican friend like this, who insists on raising hell for being APPROPRIATELY labeled in the ethnic sense, slap the shit out of him/her.

wow it's so great that you're able to understand someone else's sense of identity and cultural heritage better than they do.  it'd prolly be best if you sat him down to tel him about the appropriate way he should feel about himself, preferrably by starting with something like "Here in AMERICA, it's like this..."  it'd be a real nice gesture relieve him of his ignorance.

It would be wise, for future uh...cultural sensitivity, to have the knowledge that if you are dealing with ANY person who claims to be hispanic and looks black in the way YOU know blackness, to remember that they put national identity above racial identity and it is disrespect to them and their culture to not acknowledge this.

In a related point, is it only North America that refers to people of Central American origin as a separate race?
Personally I've never really seen anyone refer to a Spaniard, Portuguese, Mexican, South American or Persians as anything other than white.
Its interesting how much people try and break down race into more and more sub categories to form some form of cultural identity.

Domnican's and many hispanics don't like to attribute themselves to being black. They see themselves as being Dominican, their country identity, first and foremost. Just like how with many asians, they see themselves as CHINESE, or JAPANESE or KOREAN -- first and foremost.

One reason for this is that many Dominican's look down on blacks and don't want to be tied to any form of black culture or identity. There is a split on the island. Read up on it.

This is also not special to Dominican's. This happens with just about anyone I know hispanic and looks black.

It can be annoying how some are like I'M NOT BLACK when they clearly look black, almost if they have some self hate thing going, but that's just the way they were raised.

We're not talking about country of origin, but ethnicity. Some of these cats are confused, and probably think that when their authentic latino girlfriend invites them over to family dinner for the first time, they'll get a warm reception from the folks, when they're more likely to get chased out by Papi's Cuban rifle.

That's why I have a newfound respect for Haitians. They speak French, act like French people sometimes, but they can admit that they're Black.

I agree with you because some black hispanic self hate is very evident, but it boils down to their own culture. My old roommate was born and raised in Venezuela but his parents were American. He could labeled as "white" by any other person, but he considers himself hispanic because of the identity he had growing up.

It's just the way it is. Self identity and cultural heritage are complex ideas.

"African American" is a stupid title, meant to disassociate Blacks from America and being labeled as natural Americans by adding the "African" modifier to imply immigrant origin. How many White people do you know who refer to themselves as "European American" or how often do you see that label on any official documentation? You don't, because White people don't want to be reminded that Europeans came here on boats, as well, except theirs was wooden instead of banana.

That's the spirit. I bring some real-life examples and honesty, sans all the sugar-coating, and BOOM - out comes the race card.

Regardless of your opinions and how you elect to interpret mine, the fact of the matter is there are Dominicans out there that suffer from an identity crisis compounded by an inferiority complex.

I recall an interview where Quentin "Rampage" Jackson said something along the lines of, "I used to be into saying 'I am African American,' but the other day I met a white guy who had immigrated here from South Africa. So he's a white dude, but he's 'African American' by definition, so... screw it. I'm black. BLACK."

Oh, I know, no worries. Boogers' comments were extremely culturally insensitive. It doesn't bother me when we use the term African American or Latin American, but for some reason when white dudes go on about how they're Italian American or Irish American etc., it makes me laugh as they have probably zero in common with actual Italians or Irish people.

Agreed. And even in that case, while many have little in common with their parents' or grandparents' homeland, at least they knew where they came from. Most black people have no idea what country their ancestors came from, so the term African American becomes more of a broad attempt to reach some past ancestry. Personally I've never referred to myself as African American unless I had to (surveys typically list African American instead of black)
