play magazine and FF12 -- print ipecac
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:50:28 PM »
some choice quotes from heather campbell's godawful review of ff12 in play magazine to worsen your thursday morn:

Quote
I've fallen completely in love with this game, and don't want the relationship to end. I'd rather spend thirty more minutes not knowing how it concludes than ever draw my sword against the final boss

Quote
If pixels had gravity, then FFXII would be the dense center of the universe.

Quote
I'm not afraid to give Final Fantasy XII a ten. It's just overwhelming to have played perfection. And that's just what this game is; extraordinary to the point of awe. I'm confused by how good it is.

Quote
Final Fantasy XII is the first mature game I've ever played. Whether it be the wisdom of the story, language or of actual gameplay, its hard to imagine playing another RPG after this.

Quote
And I'll add this: I'm embarrassed to love other Final fantasy games. They seem so childish now, the plotlines straightforward and sophomoric. How can I invoke an unsoiled memory of Squall or Cloud when Basch is a thousand times the man they were.

Quote
I don't even know how to encapsulate the experience of FFXII in two pages. The title is so grand, so erudite, that I feel illiterate by comparison. It is so much greater than I.

 :-X  :-X  :-X

the real question is: does she like billy corgan  :'(

Why the fuck is the press spooging over this game? It's so average it's ridiculous. My God there have been better rpgs this year than FFXII. I bet you XS3 is better than FFXII.

XS3 is not better than FF12. In fact, it's the only RPG I've played this year WORSE than FF12.

I saw an issue of Robot magazine (semi-naughty Japanese pinup artwork) and it had a pullquote from Dave Halverson on the back saying how I needed to add it to my collection immediately. I lol'ed.

TotA > FFXII, Himuro. Youre just too stupid to see something obvious even when its right on the cover and the back of the box.

I realized what I was getting into Maf, but I didn't think it'd be that bad lol

I liked earlier Tales games but the animu shit didn't bother that much with those titles, so I went with it. Turns out I can longer tolerate the animu shit now so it made playing TotA an embarrassment mang.

My tastes have changed since the last time I played a Tales games so I had a lot less tolerance.

Even if you loved it that much... You'd think after writing it, you'd look it over and realize how fucking stupid you sound before it goes to print.

I got 2 hours in on someone else's PS2 before I lost access to it, I should be continuing tomorrow. There's no way in hell I'm paying for another PS2 for myself.

You get used to the camera.

I kinda feel like replaying FF12 now to watch all the cutscenes again. Loved the intro.

I don't hate FF12, but it's definitely not a very good game.  It starts out very promising, but the gameplay never delivers.  It feels like a less-together Kotor clone.  The presentation saves it, but not for too long.

I admire Square for trying something different, and I hope they continue to do so.  For whatever reason, FF12 didn't quite pan out for them.

It's like KOTOR but I never have to assign and queue moves for my party since I already programmed their awesome AI. Sometimes I wish I could queue moves for myself though but it didn't bother me too much. FF12 was great, but a bit too easy. But I'd rather it be too easy than too hard. And the presentation and visuals were fantastic. Square is definitley the best in that department.

Thanks for spoiling. I hope you know we all haven't beaten FFXII because it gets tedious as shit but thanks for spoiling. You probably spoiled the only plot twist in the game lol

best game of the generation, hands down

What the fuck jojo, you're smarter than this :(

there are very few excellent games for this generation to be fair, I'd rate any PSX Final Fantasy higher than it

but this is a game that I enjoyed a lot and consistently so without ever getting bored or frustrated, the combat system ressembling that of an MMORPG is addictive, the plot is refreshingly mature and laid-back, the character art is beautiful, all the locales are gorgeous, the music even without all the usual catchy Uematsu melodies is also pretty damn sweet and you don't get tired of listening to the same tunes for hours on end

and it's incredibly well-written and voiced, every character is a joy to read and to listen to... it's very rare that we'll take voice acting seriously, but they hired some really good people

at some point the evil doctor Cid has a maniacal laughter and it's really convincing and mean, unlike most everything I heard in any game since some PC CD-ROM adventure games in the mid-nineties... such touches IMO elevate FF12 above the norm

but hey many people like you will hate the direction the series has taken and would prefer to see FF trademarks such as neverending strings of tragedy, more emotional characters, traditional turn-based battles... that's to be expected and there's nothing wrong with that

I'd prefer more gameplay over story myself, but FFXII was not the answer NOR the solution. All FFXII broke down to was potential. The entire game was potential. Mature and politically driven story? It's there, in spurts, but it's missing so much. Great, strategic gampelay? It potentially could have been there but what we have is a game that for the most part plays for you and doesn't allow too many options. I could go on and on, but please don't think that the only people who think FFXII is a total disappointment are the ones who are like OMG FF STORIES ARE AWESOME CLOUD. Please.

It's so refreshing playing a FF game where I don't break into a 3 second load for a battle screen everytime I take ten steps.
