Valve love is pretty disgusting, especially on reddit. EA's attempt was shameless and direct. Valve does well-disguised, complex experimental marketing that seems to be designed to see how much brand loyalty they've acquired and how long they can lead on a large group of nerds.

At least with EA, there was no pretense. Valve fans seem to think the company is doing this out of love or something.

The ending was anticlimatic and the progress rate should be doubled, but otherwise it was a pretty successful marketing stunt by Valve. Portal 2 got alot more exposure and a bunch of hipster devs made bank.

I dont really like ARGs, but I kind of respect the work and creativity that goes into them.

That said, this latest phase of the Portal 2 ARG is kind of burning through their stock of goodwill. It violates a lot of 101 Good Game Design principles (Hiding the rules, not providing any feedback) and also manages not to provide any real reward- Despite the thousands of man hours poured into the ARG, we're looking at a release smack in the middle of a workday, about 12 hours ahead of time.

I understand why they can't release the game early, but then why even hint at it? It feels cruel and manipulative and very un-Valve.

After I beat the single player part if somebody wants to play the co-op campaign together on the 360 let me know. One caveat is that I'm a dumb ass when it comes to puzzle games so if that bothers you or you don't have any patience for my dumb ass forget about it.
