No - seriously, which brain dead fucking cuntstains are running this piss fest? This has gone beyond generalised spazdom and into full-on "we are complete fucking idiots" space. I am an equal opportunity hater regardless of what people think and MS are really sucking horse cock right now. Where is the ANYTHING!? It really does feel like "well, we are done for this gen so... 3 years off! enjoy dancing in your living room and wanking off cartoon characters for achievements!"

360 has no games, get a PC, etc.

Though I've been feeling the same thing for the last two years now. Things were so great at the beginning of the generation, but now my library and recent purchases are mainly taken up by multiplatform games that just happen to perform better on the 360 and thus I buy on principle. MS in of itself has done nothing of late to keep me excited about the system.

I'm going to say the same thing I say when people rag on the wii.  Who cares if microsoft's internal studios aren't actively involved in supporting their platform with software output.  The system still gets lots of games from various sources via various delivery mechanisms.  Its like hating on Apple for not developing first party app store games, which I should clarify would be a distinguished mentally-challenged attitude.

Sony has been more amiable to third party networks, Steam in particular, compared to MS having everything locked down.  The PS3 version of Portal 2 includes 3 copies of the game (PS3, PC and Mac), cross platform play, patches and DLC updates via Steamworks whereas the 360 version gets nothing extra.

Well, that's nice an all for Sony, but I don't see how having a closed system is going to hurt Microsoft in the long run.  Well, maybe their segregation of 'major' labels on xbla and 'indie' games on that other x thing could hurt them assuming the market crashes at some point.

The closed system is getting to be a real problem. People are having to hold back because they want parity between 360/PS3. Awesome to see that Valve doesn't give a shit and is doing cross-platform on PS3/PC while leaving out Xbox (and making it the clearly inferior version)

Microsoft was amazing until the end of 2008. Ever since then they've been on a steady decline, getting worse and worse every year. Once they realized they knocked Sony down a peg or two, they just stopped trying.

XBLA, on the other hand, has been getting better and better, and right now it's the console's saving grace. And of course the 360 is the de facto shooting game console (actually it's probably the best shooter console of all time), so it at least has a few things going for it.

I think Microsoft has been on cruise control for a while.  Microsoft has been back in the black for years and they are doing their best to recuperate on their Xbox (and 360) investment.  The rest of the generation for Microsoft will continue to be safe choices and an emphasis on Kinect.

The downside is that Microsoft is being rewarded very well with Kinect, which makes me worried that Xbox 3 will be a Wii like console where gimmickry has taken preference over power.  I think the only real reason we haven't seen the successors out is that the 360 and PS3 are such money sinks that they will need to be out 6-8 years in order to be considered worth it (Sony will never recuperate on the PS3 as they are $5 billion in the red overall with the PS3 embarrassment) financially.

I thought about getting rid of the 360 for a PS3 but I'm scared that I need a frontal lobotomy like most of the Sfags apparently did in order to be a PS3 only owner.

Everyone is on cruise control these days.

Nintendo:
Wii: lol
3DS: lol, though maybe some actual stuff in a year

MS:
Kinect: lol
Real games: lol

Sony:
PSP: wat, we have studios?
PS3: Sony US/Euro = sequel, sequel, sequel and maybe this time it'll sell; Sony Japan first party = wat, we still exist?
NGP: port, sequel, spinoff, port

The time for anyone to make some hot new real budget IPs seems long past.

Like I said before,Kinect and 3DS will be the place for new stuff this gen.E3 will clearly show that.

As for big games, you will get more of the same.Everybody is now in money making mode,by the end of this year 360 will finally be at "zero",RROD included...that tells a lot

Audience is to blame too, just look how well new IP are selling.People are waiting for sequels to familiar games, everything else is immediately marked as "rent, buy used, wait, etc".

In short,Kinect+3DS="next" gen

Makes me wonder about "real" next gen, this gen we got tons of new games.Big budgets, long dev time and all that...

If somebody wants to make next gen game,he better start working on it right now.

as stupid as it sounds due to my complete lack of understanding how any of this shit works, why can't there be more scalability in console/handheld games?  for PC games, generally a modest rig can run any game at low resolution, and as you beef it up, software looks and runs better.  That's how it has always been for that.  But it's the same for the ipad and iphone, right? games run smoother on the newer hardware, and even when games released are more for the new hardware, they can still run on the old hardware.

like, what if Microsoft put out a box that isn't a drastic improvement from the the 360, but the games are still playable on the existing 360.  When you play it on the new box, it's 60fps 1080p, better AA/AF, etc.  When you play it on the 360, it's blurry, choppy, jaggy, tearing, and basically what the average 360 game is like today (hurrr).

I'm not taking a lot of things into account, like the real benefit of doing that when the original system would be phased out soon enough, but still, I don't get why games are basically disposable on consoles.

Stupid thought, yeah.  wait, what's this thread about?

side note:  does anyone realize Motorstorm 3 and SOCOM 4 are coming out this month? does sony even market their games?

Few problems with that theory.

-console generational gap is usually* very big...imagine half-life PC trying to run Crysis 2
-totally different architecture for each gen...like night and day difference
-game would still have to run on 360...bugs,performance,QA,etc=money,money,money
-has to be designed with 360 in mind,we can't do that...for whatever reasons, money(time) included
-it would cost too much
-black box that sits between coders and machine has to be bigger to ensure compatibility...loss of performance
-imagine multiple gen sku mess...they would still have to sell and support 360 actively

It would work if new 360 was released every two years.

this

this isn't about this gen, Em, this is about the next gen and the gen after that. MS are starting to show that they don't particularly see what is on the horizon. That may be a little unfair and we may see all the bugbears and stupidisms of the XBL closed system suddenly vanish at X720 launch but i can honestly say i'm not confident.

As per Iconclast - amazing until 2008 but since then it's like they switched out the management to have the Excel team run the show and it seems to be all falling apart a bit. If anyone could really fuck things up - it'd be MS. I really am half expecting IP checked accounts next year - "oh wait, you aren't in the Merica? or Non japan asia? then you can't play this glorious import ! Wait for the Japanese version... oh wait, we aren't releasing it! Never mind!" *

* - exaggerated for effect, but i honestly think this is the sort of dumb fuck move we might see. I have no faith at all in the current management.

Yeah, IP-checked accounts are probably on the horizon. I'm not interested in anything which prevents me from buyings stuff based on my current physical location. I just want to scream at them, "YOU ARE DOING 'INTERNET' INCORRECTLY."

Gotta admit the Hydra looks great, has a solid build and is probably the most sensical motion control device so far with analog sticks on each controller and no glowing dildos. If Valve forge the way and build some support I might bite, I mean shitloads of games on PC support surprising peripherals like the TrackIR system (mainly used by flight enthusiasts so you can look around your cockpit easily). I'm still open minded about motion control  :-[

yeah, TrackIR has a lot of support for more hardcore sim/enthusiast games.  The deeper racing sims, flight sims and all that.  ARMA is the other type of game I've seen with support, and that's pretty much the most hardcore realistic shooter.

Valve also put support behind the Novint Falcon and I don't know how that turned out.  At least I think they did because they kept showing it with HL2.

but yeah, the Hydra looks interesting and better than the Wii or PS3 stuff because it doesn't require line of sight with a camera or sensor bar (well, PS3 doesn't, but they still make the ball glow so won't lose position).  I'm not clear on the Valve support for it since it sounds like Razer is making the additional Portal 2 levels.

i find my self agreeing with Methodis - gamers should be selfish and MS are pissing in the mouths of all of us once they had "done enough" - i seriously believe they are thinking about X7200XBFUCKNAME right now and they will be massively on the ball for about two years and then fuck it all up again.

XBL closed system is being exposed - if MS do not adapt they will die and i will happily drink 50 litres of gas to make sure i piss it all out on their dumbfuck faces if they fail to see the warnings.

It is a great thing when eyes start to open.  MS is on borrowed time with the 360.  Hope they are enjoying the ride now because everything will have to reboot soon, including Live subscriptions.  Once Call of Duty as a franchise dies off Live subscriptions will go into the tank as well.

I wonder in what way MS could open up the Live environment. I've really been enjoying TrueAchievements.com since signing up there; it's a wonder that MS doesn't take a hint and develop something similar as a portal to their service.

Given the 360's dominance in the NPD over the past few months, I don't think MS shares the same sentiment. But I see what you are saying. If you weren't into Kinect or COD, there hasn't been much to play on the 360 in the past half a year.

You -can- stream music from any networked PC while playing. Or are you talking about something tying into the Last.fm service?

The big thing for the Xbox 360 will be apps, bank on it.

Or don't but I think this years big deal from them will be the integration of Windows Phone 7 apps and a wider release of XBLA games on WP7. Obviously I expect game announcements and the typical "GUESS WHAT SERVICE IS COMING TO THE 360" but it's all about apps in my book.

Good thing? Probably not but this is the closest I think the 360 will get to being open. I wouldn't hate it if I could stream music while playing games or hit the guide button while playing to pull up the youtube app.

Most people don't care about a Windows 7 phone.   Everyone has an android phone or iphone.  Xbox Live isn't a factor anywhere except Xbox 360.  Completed rejected on PC and ignored in the mobile market.

Possibly, but I don't see it taking off except for the Xbox fan contingent who also wants to play their xbox live games on a phone.  Apple is too dominant in the phone app market now.  MS ignored the phone and tablet market far too long and now it is going to bite them in the ass.  Android has a bigger potential to be a huge player in the mobile market if Google can get some standardizations in place.

i find my self agreeing with Methodis - gamers should be selfish and MS are pissing in the mouths of all of us once they had "done enough" - i seriously believe they are thinking about X7200XBFUCKNAME right now and they will be massively on the ball for about two years and then fuck it all up again.

Call of Duty will probably have at least 2-3 more successful installments before it could be considered worrying for Microsoft.

Kinect should be a bigger worry.  The new toy appeal could wear off at any moment and if Microsoft has nothing to keep the momentum going on the Xbox 360, it is going to slow down.  Although the Wii's fame lasted about a couple of years so hopefully for Microsoft's sake, Kinect will last into 2012 or 2013 when they will inevitably release the 360 successor.

Not to sound like a Nintard but Microsoft is just doing whatever they can to make up as much money as possible on their investment.  They're playing it as safe as possible and as cheap as possible.  It is perfectly understandable that they've essentially given up on the first party front because even if Kinect falls apart later in the year, they can keep the 360 going for a while.  The 360 is _the_ multiplatform console of choice and new sales of COD, Madden, and NCAA Football will keep it going until the new system is out.  Obviously Microsoft knows this or it wouldn't be such a virtual desert.
