They've described it themselves as a cross between God of War and Oblivion.

They haven't given any real details yet. This is the first time they've shown any gameplay at all. Big Huge Games are/were pretty good devs though.

from wikipedia

Quote
Gameplay

Kingdoms of Amalur will feature "5 distinct regions, 4 playable races, and 3 class trees with 22 abilities per tree."[3] The player starts off as a "blank slate," waking up in a pile of corpses after returning from the dead. The game will utilize a unique "destiny" system, whereby the player can invest in a skill-tree system to unlock various "destinies," which acts as the class system for the game. Combat works based on the timing of button presses, similar to the style of an action RPG, with occasional quicktime events like those in the God of War series. Lead Combat Designer Joe Quadara, however, emphasized that, "Twitch skill is only going to get you so far. Strategy and proper RPG playing is going to get you farther."[3] 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling said that the style of the game would be a marriage between God of War and Oblivion.

Development

38 Studios originally began developing the Amalur universe for use in an MMO, codenamed 'Copernicus'. After acquiring Big Huge Games in 2009, the studio decided to transform the project into a single-player RPG, as Ken Rolston and his team had already been working on an RPG while Big Huge Games was part of THQ.[3] Currently, there are still plans to expand the Amalur universe into an MMO after the release of Reckoning.

Great subtitle there  :tbslol

The title is terrible period. Might as well name it nerd masturbation for the crossover appeal it has.

I got a Fable vibe from the trailer.  The environments shown seem to be large flat areas with paths to them rather than the open worlds of Elder Scrolls games.  At least I associate Eder Scrolls with the big, explorable worlds.

anyway, I like that it's more fanciful than most fantasy rpgs these days.

and who cares about the name? Saying Amalur in public is an invitation to get a nerd bashing.

yeah, Fable seems like the closest comparison to this.  But combat in this seems more like an action game.

the style and design reminds me a bit of Torchlight.  I think it's just the minimap making me think that.

38 Studios and EA have announced a demo for upcoming RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The demo will be released on January 17th, giving us a taste of the game, and also unlocking special items in the final game. In addition to the demo, 38 Studios' Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and BioWare's Mass Effect 3 have cooked up a cross-promotion which will see rewards for fans of both titles. Read on for further details!
By playing the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo, gamers will receive two unlocks for Mass Effect 3 when the highly anticipated game releases on March 6, 2012, both designed by the renowned creator of Spawn, Todd McFarlane:

Reckoner Knight Armor: This armor will maximize damage done in close-quarters combat while a beefed–up power cell feeds energy into weapon systems to increase projectile velocity.
The Chakram Launcher: This weapon uses a fabricator to manufacture lightweight, explosive ammunition discs. This weapon is earned after completing the Reckoning demo and watching the trailer at the end.
By playing the upcoming Mass Effect 3 demo, fans will unlock the following items for Reckoning when the game launches on February 7, inspired by Mass Effect:

N7 Armor: Players can unlock special armor inspired by Commander Shepard’s iconic N7 battle armor including Helm, Cuirass, Gauntlets, Chausses and Greaves.
Onmiblade Daggers: A holographic blade stemming from Commander Shepard’s Omni-Tool, the Omni-blade allows players to stab enemies in close combat. Once players install and play the Mass Effect 3 demo, they will unlock the daggers.
The Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning demo features the introduction to the game, allowing players to experience the game’s Tutorial Mode and a portion of its large, open world. Players will create and customize their hero and drop right into the action. Once players master the basics, they will have 45 minutes to explore the vast world of Amalur and begin to embark upon a quest that could redefine their character’s destiny forever.

I'm liking how snappy and breezy this game seems.  Don't know if I'm over saturated by all the fantasy games or if this will be great to compliment all the Skyrim I've been playing.  I'll judge it by the demo next week.

I think what I'm most looking forward to is just a different kind of character than my one in Skyrim. I'd like to replay a different one in Skyrim but no game can hold my interest to play it through twice just as a different class so this will be how I scratch that itch.

I'm kind of interested in this. The common weakness of these games is that they are often filled with basic dungeon design. I really like me some good puzzles, but Skyrim lacks those. This looks like Skyrim with a bit of fable and some real action combat. So that interests me. I hope the demo has a dungeon to test out.

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning-DEMO/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80245418983

Demo is up. However you feel about the game this is a textbook example of how to do a demo. The demo is the opening of the game with a pretty good tutorial that shows you how to be a melee character, rogue character, or magic character. You get items in the retail game for completing the demo. And where most demos would end at the end of the tutorial level, this one says you now have 45 minutes to explore the world at that point. You can definitely tell whether this is something you want after playing the full demo. I stopped at the tutorial bit because I didn't have time to go for 45 minutes this morning.

As far as the game, this is pretty much a kinda scaled down Bethesda game with 3rd person action combat. Its deeper than Fable by a long shot but not as deep as say Skyrim. You can't pick up nearly everything in the world. If you find Bethesda games a bit daunting, this is more inviting than that. Still it definitely has that Bethesda feel. You pick up herbs and reagents for crafting. The sneak system immediately resembles a Bethesda game down to the winking eye.

The graphics are a slightly more realistic interpretation of Fable with some World of Warcraft thrown in versus the realism of say Skyrim. The voice acting is better than Bethesda's game but I found the story to be a bit too fantasy geek for my taste. I actually sort of prefer the somber tone of Skyrim by comparison but that's just a personal taste kinda thing.

The combat is decent for this type of RPG. I mean they really shouldn't compare themselves to God of War because their combat system isn't as deep and the animations aren't as good as that game. I would say maybe a slightly less good Darksiders is a better comparison on  the combat side although its kinda neat how you can bounce between melee and magic pretty easily. A bit stiff though.

I like it. I'll probably pick it up. I wasn't kind of blown away or a bit in awe like I was in Skyrim. The world isn't as expansive as that to create that feeling but it feels decent enough. And it seems like it wants to create a bethesda game that streamlines a bit of the boring elements out of those games (perhaps at the cost of the scale of the world).

Essentially this game feels like what Fable should have been. The menu system is also better than Skyrim. Easier to equip stuff and junk items.

Note though that all these opinions stem from only playing to essentially the end of the tutorial bit. I played for like 5 minutes maybe after that so this isn't necessarily the most indepth take on the game.

What one game would you compare this to? I haven't tried the demo yet.

I keep thinking "Fable" - but I suppose a better term could be "Two Worlds / Divinity / Arcania"?

Does the stats look good?

played the 360 demo through the tutorial, it's pretty good, ranged combat gets a little wonky at times

stats and skills look nice and flexible, i like the fate card system, the "reckoning"  ::) effect looks cool

seems to be a little bit darksiders, little bit fable, little bit elder scrolls, little bit WoW (mostly art-wise)

story and voice acting are decent

DLing origin demo now

I liked the demo a whole lot.  It does feel like Fable mixed with Elder Scrolls, but mostly a western rpg without any of the fat.  Everything is really quick and it doesn't seem to waste your time.  The tutorial at the beginning is so brief and doesn't try and mask how it's a video game.   Hopefully that keeps up throughout the game.

PC version is surprisingly great.  I thought it'd be one of those crummy ports but short of remaking interface, it's really well done.  I like how I can right click items to quickly compare or add to junk.  It feels out of Torchlight or something.

Probably canceling Resident Evil 3ds and picking this up instead.

and story and stuff could be shit.  I dunno I skipped all that to get a feel for the game.  Game makes it easy since important information is highlighted in blue and persuasion in green.

The Fable + Elder Scrolls, WRPG with the fat trimmed out actually sounds somewhat appealing. Even though I haven't been following this game at all and know nothing about it aside from Curt Schilling. Is it glitchy and janky with crappy combat like most WRPGs tend to be?

Rushed through the demo skipping cutscenes and anything that didn't involve me slicing through things. It's nice. The combat is as close to good as you'll find in the genre, though in the early stages melee is very mashy and magic/archery seem to be overpowered. I'm sure once you're a bit further into the game and playing on a higher difficulty level it will be plenty better.

UI is not as good as it should be. Whatever happened to character mannequins?

Anyway I fought rats, trolls , wolves and bandits and picked locks and passed speech checks, so there is a 0% chance I won't enjoy this immensely.

I had that headless guy too.  And that black screen thing happened to others on gaf.  There are also some audio problems and hitches but is, allegedly, an old build.

The Fable + Elder Scrolls, WRPG with the fat trimmed out actually sounds somewhat appealing. Even though I haven't been following this game at all and know nothing about it aside from Curt Schilling. Is it glitchy and janky with crappy combat like most WRPGs tend to be?

It's really shallow and takes its cues from action games, but really just feels like a faster Fable.  The move sets for melee attacks are a lot of "Attack-Pause-Attack" or holding attack.  It's auto lock on (which isn't great), you can have one attack plus magic at a time.  You can't aim at all, not even with the bow; arrows are unlimited but you can only shoot a handful at a time and must wait through a brief cool down period before it replenishes.  You can roll and block.  It's not the greatest combat but it's inoffensive, fast and works fine.

and there's a finishing move that asks you to mash a button for an experience bonus. it's not a qte or anything.  like depending on how much of the meter is filled, it gives you 25 to 100% bonus in experience.  If you ignored it, it doesn't seem like you'd die or anything.

A lot of people praise Witcher 2's combat, but I haven't played that to compare.
