My Netflix doesn't work.  It won't even get to the menu.  Just keeps asking me to sign in and never goes anywhere on the initial netflix logo screen.

Sony shut down its Playstation Network after a new custom firmware version for the console let users download games and content with a fake credit card number, according to a moderator from Playstation fan-site PSX-Scene.

The moderator, who posted the information on news aggregator Reddit under the user name chesh420, said the latest version of a custom firmware for the Playstation 3 called Rebug.me let Playstation 3 owners with that firmware installed access a developer network. They could then put in a fake credit card number and download content as they pleased without any kind of verification of the number on Sony’s back-end.

The latest version of Rebug.me was released at the end of March, and the first guides detailing how to get modified Playstation 3 consoles onto the developer network came out around a week after that, the moderator said. Sony brought its Playstation Network down four days ago without offering many details about what happened and said it was beefing up security. It has acknowledged that an “external intrusion” brought down the network and that it is trying to beef up its security. Meanwhile, it has said it is still trying to determine if any user credit card information was stolen.

In a blog post this morning, Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold said, “I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time. As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we’re working to get them back online quickly. We’ll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience.”

The PlayStation Network, or PSN, is Sony’s attempt to engage its video-game console and PlayStation Portable audience in a larger online entertainment network that includes online games, movies and TV shows, as well as Sony exclusives such as Qore, a digital magazine, and The Tester original TV show. It’s a strategic asset for the console maker as more of the-video game audience moves into the online world.

There are 948 games now available in the PlayStation Network store, as well as 4,000 pieces of add-on content for games. There are also 31,000 movies and TV shows available for download, not counting the content available on Netflix, Hulu, and sports content.

VentureBeat has contacted Sony for comment and will update the story as soon as more information is available.

SHUT THE FUCK UP

seriously, do you think ANY of us care about exclusives? Only Sonytards do, because that's the only ammo they have for system warz arguments.

XBLA has tons of great shit that never goes on PSN. XBL hasn't had an outage since 2007.

They are both good consoles, but I think that Xbox has the advantage because there are no excessive updates that take hours to apply. With Xbox you can just jump on and play. Game updates take a couple of seconds.

Why the fuck am I even arguing with this guy

I'm totally fine with this 30 minute process, as I should be doing homework anyway. Thanks MS for putting me on the right track.

Yup PS3 is finished, games are seriously under-performing left and right, online is not working, people are jumping ship...stick a fork into it

Even 360 Portal 2 is destroying PS3 Portal 2
Quote
Over half of all boxed Portal 2 sales in the UK last week came on Microsoft's Xbox 360, according to GfK-ChartTrack data.

Just 35 percent of sales were of the PS3 version of the game - something of a surprise considering the cross-platform capability offered with the title's Steam features.
:rofl

Sony will get totally annihilated at E3,after Nintendo conference nobody will talk about PSP2...stick a fork into it

MS will be busy showing revolutionary, innovative games for their record selling revolutionary hardware called Kinect +HALO 4

Nintendo will be talking about their new revolutionary home console/handheld hybrid

What will Sony show,glowing dildo?

As much as I'm excited for the NGP I know that this scenario is the likeliest. The only thing that could salvage some of the buzz is if they announce a crazy price tag, like $250 for the base model.

Obviously when the NGP price comes out it will be annihilated, while Nintendo will cleverly not announce any pricing. Sony would be best to not talk about price for NGP until they absolutely have to.

now gents, remember we have some Xbox1.5 PS2.5 remakes to look forward to like Icock and Shadow Of the Colons.

And The Last GameonPS3 Guardian coming any moment (probably around the same time as GT6 - i.e. never)

Infamous will probably sell great guns like the first one, and i'm sure there's got to be another Ratchet! You can NEVER have enough Ratchet... or Resistance... maybe even squeeze out another Fillerzone level pack full release before the PS3 is taken round the back of the shed and unceremoniously shot like the flea ridden Old Yeller light-o-death it is.

I'm worried about my collection though when this happens - though i assume the PS4 will be backwards compatible

Either way, I'm bringing home an 360 slim tonight. It will be my spare system (mainly for netflix), and the vast amount of xbla titles. Co-op games would be nice too.

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
1.Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
2.Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
3.Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.
