X-Men: First Class is apparently a movie.
« on: May 26, 2011, 09:24:42 PM »
Quote from: ComingSoon.net
Fans of the movies should appreciate how Matthew Vaughn has established characters they love in a unique setting with a strong cast and set pieces as big and impressive as the other movies.

Quote from: Digital Spy
An action blockbuster with rollercoaster thrills and laughs that has a fundamentally intelligent core.

Quote from: Boxoffice Magazine
First Class is ultimately a success, because not only does it reward fans, but it redeems a series that gave the superhero genre its start.

Quote from: Radio Times
This grandiose globetrotting fantasy boasts plentiful action spectacle and effective character-based drama set in an age of civil unrest and Cold War paranoia.

100% at RT, 11 positive reviews. Average score: 8/10.

It would be Rose Byrne for me. I was going to see this just because I adore her and would become her sex slave at the drop of a hat.

I didn't even know she was in the movie. Or I just completely forgot.

This, Super 8 and Harry Potter are the only summer blockbuster mega movies I have any interest in.

Is Samuel Jackson in this?

Nope, this is a Fox movie, not Marvel Studios.

to be fair, everyone forgot.  she's absent in all the marketing.

Matthew Vaughn has been pretty candid about the haphazard production.  Though, it sounds better off than Xmen 3, which he goes into as well (he was up to direct that at one point).

The impressions all sound good because of what they're saying.  It's less the hyperbole from people who said Thor was good.  Like, the concern I had watching the trailers has always been that while Charles and Erik stuff with McAvoy and Fassbender* would be great, it might not be the focus in favor of the other mutants.  Apparently that isn't the case.  And the scenes with the other mutants are supposed to be good too.  Plus, the trailers show some action, but there is supposed to be a lot they haven't shown yet in promotional material.

I'm down for a popcorn flick that tries to borrow a wee bit of dramatic heft from a historical setting and the X-Men have been such an obvious allegory for so long that setting it in the 60's doesn't feel like a gimmick.

Of course, if it's good then the pretension will create warring camps of hyperbolic, oversensitive fanboys and angry haters who are shocked, shocked to find out that it's a big-budget action movie.

It took me about three seasons of Mad Men to figure out whether January Jones was a bad actress, or just really good at playing an affected, emotionally repressed person.

My conclusion?  We'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

I enjoyed First Class for what it was.  Magneto, Xavier, and Mystique WERE the movie; the other good-guy characters all just kinda felt like they were just there.

The White Queen was probably the worst character in the movie; sure she was hot (and the nerds next to us who wouldn't stop making stupid comments all went quiet the first January Jones and her jugs appeared on screen, lol) and looked the part, but they went with the wrong actor for this character.  She isn't really involved in most of the movie beyond standing around and the camera focusing on her ass when walking, so whatever.

There was a rumor of a Magneto Origins movie some years back, and after seeing how young Erik was portrayed in this film, I wish they would have went with that instead of First Class.  1960's Magneto going around hunting down nazis would have been awesome.

Was pretty good.  I'd say 3 1/2 out of 4 stars.  Good actors, decent enough story, good pacing, solid action.  The only thing missing is I felt a handful of scenes that should have had more dramatic effect fell a bit flat instead and the movie wasn't as epic as it could have been.  McAvoy and Fassbender were really the reasons to see the film.  I wouldn't mind a First Class 2 as long as they got both of them back.

Also

very surprised someone as talented as Mathew Vaughn had to use the "black guy dies first" cliche :\

Eh, it'd be pg-13 and that really doesn't work for that.

Although man, First Class reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally pushes the edge of PG-13.  A decade ago this would have been R rated for sure.  There's so much graphic violence and some of it is pretty dark like Kick-Ass.

Re: X-Men: First Class is apparently an 87% fresh movie.
« Reply #45 on: June 11, 2011, 11:44:47 AM »
The movie had some serious continuity issues:

1.) If Mystique's genes prohibit her from aging normally, then how is it that she seemingly matured at the same rate as a Charles Xavier, from a child to an adult.

2.) We learn that Xavier lost his ability to walk at this point of his life, but he was walking pretty damn well as an older Professor X, in a flashback scene played by Patrick Stewart.

3.) In that same scene, he was walking alongside Magneto, suggesting that they were not yet enemies until much later down the road, but this film is indicating that they first parted ways in the 60s while they were young men.

4.) Havok is supposed to be the brother of Cyclops - in the comics as well as in this movie considering his last name - but how is that possible if he'll be in his 60s by the time a Cyclops, in his 30s at the present time, enrolls in Xavier's school?

The supporting mutants were lousy, specifically Darwin, who was the first Mutant causality and, coincidentally, also the only Black member of the team. Refreshing to see racist overtones in 21st century film-making all but extinguished. That red Nightcrawler was a cop out to appease the Nightcrawler fans, obviously. The White Queen was dreadful. She looked like an old hag they plucked from one of Naughty America's "Best Friend's Mom" videos. She wasn't attractive in the slightest -- the actual Emma Frost had a body and was more striking.

Bunch of other shit, but all in all, a decent movie.

Not doing too hot at the box office. $100 million in 10 days, which puts it at about the same as the first movie [that ended up at $157 million]. The real problem is that First Class cost more than twice as much as the first movie. It's also lagging behind Thor.

Well, X-Men was never that big of a franchise to begin with. None of the previous movies in the series made it past $250 million domestic, and this one didn't have, at least in its advertisements, its biggest hero. Spider-man, on the other hand, has had all its installments exceed $300 million, has had a much longer time since the previous movie, will be able to focus on its main hero instead of parcelling out fragments to every single little side character (something that has hurt all of the X-men movies,) is clearly a reboot (whereas this was the prequel to a prequel that may or may not be a reboot, at least that's how it likely appeared to a lot of people,) has a good cast and likely won't be plagued with the tight schedule, multitude of inconsistent CG effects, and bad promotion of First Class. "The Amazing Spider-man" will likely continue that series' box office success (and while there isn't a trailer to judge yet, I think it looks leagues better than any of this year's superhero movies, based on the people involved.)
