Looks like The Old Republic is releasing in September
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:20:05 PM »

It's been rumored for September for a while due to the SW BluRays coming out that month and the new season of Clone Wars starting. Cross promotion fills George's pockets with money!

If that Origin timeline is to be believed, it's slated to launch before BF3 which means September is likely.

So that's what $300 million buys you.  A reskinned WoW.

The comments, from fanboys who have never played the game, are hilarious.

Cool article.

Not so excited anymore about this, hope there will be some MMO one day to break the mold again.

He liked the beta for awhile. The game sounds interesting...but eh dunno. I'm rapidly losing interest in WoW, doubt another MMO would suddenly get me back into the genre. I prefer swords n sandals over blasters n spaceships

I think like the man who wrote the Kotaku article says, there has to be something new to pull in millions of ex-mmo players. These people (like me) likely don't want the same game again.

Art style, UI, game play, all looks like WoW. And It's the biggest MMO so naturally I think of WoW. I'm not an MMO gamer, I was looking forward to something a little different from Bioware. Nope I see WoW in space with Bioware pick a path story on the side. I wanted to play Vindictus but it was region locked, and it doesn't look anything like these games, this is NOT like every MMO. It's like WoW and it's clones.

So is Bioware finished if/when this game bombs?

Considering they've poured at least $100 million into this thing...

Wasn't it 300?

I def think they are done if this flops. At least the new "Bioware" studio that was formed just to make this game.

maybe they should have focused on the whole of the game instead of their novelty dialogue options

EA wants the evolved Origin EA Store to eventually be a platform like Xbox Live or PlayStation Network or Steam.

In order to get there, EA will make more big games Origin-exclusive - "Only on Origin" - like Star Wars: The Old Republic.

"We are going to continue to be great partners for [shops] ... But at the same time you talk about platform exclusives like Halo or Uncharted, EA's going to have some of our own platform exclusives," EA Games boss Frank Gibeau told GamesIndustry.biz.

"If we can use exclusive content or other ideas to help grow our audience then we're going to do that because we're growing a platform."

Crysis 2 was recently pulled from industry leading digital distributor Steam. The game is now "only on Origin", although other smaller digital distribution outlets still offer the game. And that's apparently going to be a "long-term" recurrence.

Expensive and ambitious MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic will, however, be a complete Origin exclusive - you won't be able to buy and download the PC game anywhere else.

Gibeau said this will help EA manage downloads and beta transferrals as well as "build an audience for Origin". "For a lot of reasons it made sense for an MMO, which is a highly complex deployment," explained Gibeau.

Eventually EA hopes to become "the worldwide leader in digital publishing" as it believes it is in packaged goods publishing.

"[Origin is] not just a retail site, it's a community, it's a platform, it has traits much like you see with Steam or PSN or Xbox Live, but it's unique to EA," concluded Gibeau.

yeah, i've never had a problem with the ea download manager

it was pretty cool to buy mirror's edge for $3 off newegg, register the key with ea, and never have to worry about the disc again

they need to get cracking on that backlog, though, i want all the old medal of honor games in dd form

Sorry but I'm not a sellout like you two.

this is nothing that should surprise anyone. valve is an independent developer with a sum total of 250 employees working in a weird commie set up where they aren't fired for saying hi to their boss. ea is an all-consuming 10,000 strong leviathan whose association with gaming is purely fiscal; they are essentially the middle men through which investors extract short term personal economic gain from an industry where the commodity happens to be video games.

the market has time and again spoken on the worth of steam, it's a true hero of rose-tinted post war capitalism. the little guy who conquered the world, yet never lost sight of how they got there. anyone can figure the relationship between the growth of pc gaming and its stalwart marketplace leadership by an independent developer who has time and again had pro-consumer practice at the top of their MO.

but this is big business, it was always a matter of time before a joyless warchest wielding empire attempted to rip the carpet out from underneath what valve have built. ea knows their user-base would rather buy from steam, therefore rather than developing a competitive alternative, they will simply forbid it; there is nothing competitive about this move in a pro-consumer sense. if valve is a fairytale hero of capitalism, ea is the cold reality, leveraging their weight to appease shareholders in a myopic move that is both against the will of their userbase and ultimately damaging to the industry they trade in.

I said it once before, but I like the idea of having all my games in one convenient location. No digging through stacks of discs, no booting up three or four different programs. Steam offers lots of the former. That's my main gripe against Origin, is that it's yet another DD program for me to sign up for, browse through, and manage.

If they can actually prove the program has some worth other than being a Steam clone with a few exclusive EA games, maybe that complaint will go away.

EA has responded to an earlier report stating it pulled Crysis 2 from Valve’s Steam service, and according to a company representative, the game was pulled as a result of Steam’s policies not due to a decision made by EA.

“It’s unfortunate that Steam has removed Crysis 2 from their service,” the EA rep told GameFront. “This was not an EA decision or the result of any action by EA.

“Steam has imposed a set of business terms for developers hoping to sell content on that service – many of which are not imposed by other online game services. Unfortunately, Crytek has an agreement with another download service which violates the new rules from Steam and resulted in its expulsion of Crysis 2 from Steam.

“Crysis 2 continues to be available on several other download services including GameStop, Amazon, Origin.com and more.”

Kotaku reported earlier today that Crysis 2 was sporting an “Only on Origin” label, suggesting EA was restricting the bestseller to its newly-announced Origin distribution service.

Like the EA representative’s statement confirmed, the game is currently still available digitally via Direct2Drive, Amazon, Gamersgate, and Impulse.

Alice: Madness Returns is likewise available from multiple digital services – but not Steam. Battlefield 3, EA’s next major PC title, is also not available for pre-order through Steam.

A number of other EA titles are still up on Valve’s platform, including both Dragon Age and Mass Effect, Need for Speed and Bulletstorm.
