Hey, do PSP games just do pixel-doubling or do they actually smooth things out?

both.  if you hold the touch screen for a few seconds, an options menu comes up letting you turn on biliinear filtering.  some other options, like mapping the right stick to other inputs.

Posted this in the mecha thread, but since it's Vita related.

Super Robot Wars Z2-1 comparison on PSP vs. Vita (near HD asset 2d game like Blazblue)

2d stuff upscales very nicely on Vita.
How difficult is this to play with 0 knowledge of Japanese? I just watched a trailer and it looks incredible.

I picked up the PDP vita trigger grip from gamestop. Definitely makes holding the vita more comfortable for long sessions. Only problem is with the shoulder triggers. They are kinda mushy. Not terrible, just not great. Love having the grip on until some decent cases get released.

How difficult is this to play with 0 knowledge of Japanese? I just watched a trailer and it looks incredible.

The thing about the Super Robot Wars games is that they all play the same.  The good news is that once you figure out how to play one, you can play them all with zero knowledge of Japanese (though you'll have to make up your own story).  The bad news is it takes a bit to figure it out and you'll need to learn to recognize what the various spell names look like.

There are LOTs of guides though on gamefaqs and stuff and enough people play the series that it's easy to get questions answered.  If you don't mind having to figure things out as you go, it's totally doable.  I'd say 3/4ths of the western SRW audience who plays the games don't know Japanese.

That being said, starting with one of the English translated ones like SRW J on the GBA (fan translated) or the SRW Original Generations 1/2 GBA games (officially released) is really the easiest way because you learn how to play the games in English and then you can figure out the Japanese ones.

If you like mechs, 2d animation, and srpgs it's a great series and worth getting into.

Finished Escape Plan.  Outside of about 5-8 rooms of the ~80, it's a great game.  Awesome art and use of classic music, neat touch puzzles that make use of all of Vita's features.  Lots of puzzle concepts.  Unfortunately, some of the controls types (moving bubbles, for instance) are a bit finnicky mix of touching and physics and can cause things to not go as they should resulting in many many frustrating deaths.  It's only about those 5-8 rooms where things are really setup in a way that causes headaches; the bulk of the game gives enough lenience that despite the controls not being 100%, you can beat them.  At least the devs included a "skip room" button, for the really bs ones if you get too pissed off after a dozen or two deaths.  Overall the game is fairly well designed and a lot of fun.  Length is pretty good at 4-5 hours.  Trophies are fine outside the "3 star every room one" which is total BS mainly because the back of the Vita is extremely sensitive to touching, so just holding the damn system results in a bunch of rear touches which kill your score.  Good luck 100%-ing the game.

I don't like Motorstorm RC much.  The control just feels really off and you actually have to let go of gas to make turns.  wtf, this is an arcade racer, you make it so you can powerslide or something around turns.  Leave it to the Motorstorm guys to suck the fun out of an RC racing game :(  Also the graphics on the Vita one have this ugly washed out look and the framerate is weaksauce.  It's not a baaaad game, but it should have been way better than this.  Also why is there no full stage camera?  I hate the first time around a track having no idea what the turn ahead of me will be and then I hit a wall :(

It was an ok game until I adjusted the controls (alternative steering/ X for gas/ square for breaks) and view (aerial), then it became wowsome. Really fun game THAT WAS OFFERED FOR FREE!

The visuals could use a lift, and the tearing and framerate issues are unfortunate and weird since the game is not pushing anything at all. I guess we'll have to blame the short dev-cycle again, because it feels like it could use a couple more months of optimization.

acquire had every character model as a skin in wots3 too.  shinobido 2 just happens to have several missions where you fight bears.

game is very repetitious, though.  I don't remember other shinobido games feeling this way.  I still like it for ninja action, flying around, grappling, stealth killing bears.  the worst parts are when you can't stealth, like boss fights and these 'ox cart' missions, which kinda suck.

even though the "handles" are small they made a world of difference, i can shift my hands around now and get comfortable without feeling like i'm going to drop it, that extra bit of leverage really helps to alleviate that "pinched thumb" feeling

I'm considering the grips now that I'm playing more in bed or in the resting position.  Normally I'm resting it on my fingers, but when the weight isn't all balanced back there, it's less comfortable to use.

I'd rather have one with bigger grips, meant to be used at home, without worrying about the added bulk.  It's cool that there is a mechanism to turn the shoulder buttons into triggers.  PSP and DS grips always felt off because of the shoulder button placement.  This Vita trigger grip and the hori wheel grip for 3DS both just reposition the shoulder buttons to a more natural position.  It's the difference between using the triggers and bumpers on a 360 controller; my fingers naturally rest on the triggers.

I've never used accessories on a handheld.  But I can see them being useful in Vita's case if they prevent your fingers from constantly touching the rear touchpad and causing chaos in certain games.  The rear touchpad is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too large.  Shouldn't have been so close to the edges since it's almost impossible to hold the system without touching on it as is.

I think it's down to the software.  Shinobido 2 lets you set the backtouch to wide, narrow (default), or off.  Narrow only is only the middle of  the back touch, so 50% in the middle and 25% either end is dead.  You can't activate it by accident.

I'd rather more developers handle it like that.  The back touch panel is pressure sensitive too, or touch sensitive, or something.  I don't know if any games use that other than the Welcome Park tutorial app.

I just received the Trigger Grips accessory, and here's what I like about it:

The grips themselves, are fantastic. I mean the difference is night and day, at least to me considering how I used to hold the device. They're just the right size and material, and I'm not struggling with extending my thumbs for a few touches and swipes. The accessory itself felt cheap until I clipped it on, from there it almost felt like a part of the original design. Basically having it there makes a lot of sense.

Here's what I don't like about it:

The triggers, they're horrible. Very clunky and to push, like a rusty pedal that desperately needs to be oiled. The more I avoid the bottom part, and press where the buttons really are, the better though (duh, amirite?). That's the most legitimate complaint, the others stem from my obsessiveness... Like why is it lined up with plastic instead of silicon? I'm scared of scratching my new shiny toy. I'm not liking how uncomfortable it is to remove. The other thing is that it's not sitting well with my screen protector, as the top left and right clips are pushing down my Hori protector and two bubbles are starting to form. That is not cool, but I think I can do something about it, like scotch tape or anything to cover the edge of the film.

3.5/5, and a "no regrets." Thanks Eel.

Brothers in Arms would be a cool series, with touch screen commands combined with stick control for shooting

I'd also be down for a prettied-up Return to Castle Wolfenstein with Enemy Territory included

and oh hey i bet this thing is powerful enough to do a straight-up BF1942 with the full 64 players

as long as we're wishing for shit, i mean

fuck, a scaled-down Borderlands, Far Cry, anything

it's just cricket sounds right now

i'd imagine we'll be getting a handful of all those outstanding iOS shooters ported over shortly, though

The FPS problem in a nutshell is:

if you're waiting for western developers to throw decent support behind a handheld, you'll be waiting a while

if you're waiting for japanese developers to make a decent FPS, you'll be waiting a while

it's a lucky thing that sony themselves have like three FPS series right now for some reason.  that'll be the best bet for getting FPSs on the Vita.

If they can port down games at a minimal cost, it still seems like it'd be worth it though.
