Sorry if there is another topic (search is borked). Count this as one of those 3D games that truly stood the test of time. Forgot how great the pacing and dungeon design was in this game.

The 3D port is so good that it almost justifies my 3DS purchase.

All the 3D Zeldas pale in comparison to the 2D ones, to me. None of them could do the exploration aspect as good... they usually feel like split up zones and dungeons instead of being cohesive.

Majora's Mask did a good job. And what has been said about Skyward Sword is exciting.

I don't really rank them. Pretty much all 2D and 3D Zelda games tie as my favorite game (with OoT as my favorite, a large part due to nostalgia). The only two disappointing Zelda games are both on the DS. If you left the dungeons and took out everything else, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks would be alright. As they are you put up with a lot of bad design to play them. Most of your time is spent riding on a train in Spirit Tracks, hardly controlling anything as you travel at an agonizingly slow speed.

Ah, you were doing so well until you got to this part, BN.

They are though, simply because of the development and maturity of the teams that handled those games. Majora's Mask was a perfectly concise title with incredible sidequests (its main gimmick), Wind Waker was a beautifully designed game with great advancements in composition and storytelling, and Twilight Princess took elements of current gen gaming and its predecessors to create the ultimate dungeon crawling experience. Ocarina of Time is a concise Zelda game that unfortunately shows its "keep it simple, stupid" puzzle/design elements that each game has progressively improved upon. It's not necessarily a fault, its just a fact of time. Ten years ago the game would obviously be looked upon more fondly, but the fact of the matter is that the design has gotten more sophisticated. You can't argue that.

TP may be marginally better then OOT by 2011 standards, if you excuse the horrid opening (which you really shouldn't). But if you judge both games compared to their peers at the time then OOT is still a timeless classic forever to be remembered and TP is a 7/10 or 8/10 game.

OOT: Open world on a scale that hadn't been done on consoles, cutting edge graphics, took the series and adventure gaming into 3D in a big way, great music that people still remember. Nothing really compareable on consoles, generational leap in gaming.

TP: Outdated SD graphics by the time it came out, no new ideas or innovations just building on OOT, horrible opening hours compared to modern games, great dungeons (so I heard???).

TP didnt have any of the WOW factor that OOT had when it launched, unless you were already a fan of Zelda. It was overshadowed by new classics that launched around it.

Wind Waker is even more trapped in 1998, thanks to its fetch quest. It didn't change much else from OoT, not for the better at least.

That, and oddly, some of the weaker elements of OoT were supercharged in Wind Waker.

Barren overworld? here's an ocean! Easy combat? here's an insta-win counter attack! Lame stealth section? more stealth! etc.
(I actually liked sailing, and you did run across more interesting landmarks like the Ghost Ship and whatnot, but still) it's not the clear winner like Twilight Princess.

oh, and remember when people on gaf were saying Phantom Hourglass was the best Zelda game or something along those lines? self potato

Sprsk seems like a semi-charismatic guy on the 8-4 podcast. Jgaf members in general have some prestige for being able to tell us previews of games waiting to come over. They can also provide insight on the trends and politics of japanese gaming, being in the midst of it.

I don't care for duckroll, although I'm not sure if he is jgaf rrally.
