I don't think Suda will ever direct a game again.

His "executive director" games are fun, but they're never as good as the games he hand directed himself.  But now grasshopper's too big and he's too busy running it to direct games anymore.

Oh and I want to add a $.02 about what happened to Grasshopper:  While Yamaoka is amazing and I love his work and am glad he's going to be making A LOT of music.  I don't like this idea that he is the only composer for every Grasshopper game from here on out (Shadows of the Damned, Eva 3nd Impact, Sudatcher, Lolipop Chainsaw).  I say this for 2 reasons.  1) I liked Masafumi Takada (dunno if I spelled his name right), and I'd like him to score more grasshopper stuff and 2) it's better to have variety within a studio and have several composers to cover all the projects.  I'd be thrilled if Takada and Yamaoka switched off between games and did ~50/50 of the soundtracks.  I don't want Yamaoka to become like Sakuraba.

I don't know Sekito much.  I mean he's done a few games I've played and the music is good, but he's never stuck out to me.  Maybe when I play Last Remnant for realz, I'll fall in love with the ost.

For me: Mitsuda (who doesn't do game music anymore besides Inazuma :( ), Meguro, Yamaoka, Uematsu (kind of retired), Shimomura are the major composers I care about these days.  I'd put Go Shiina if he ever scored another rpg like Legendia (God Eater is not an rpg!)

Eh, don't really need gore in games unless you're making a FoTNS or Berserk game.  I thought the Japanese NMH with people disintegrating into pixels was even more effective than the gore in the international version.

Killer 7 is a classic and amazing game. Grasshopper hasn't a game nearly as good since. I was hoping Shadows of the Damned would be that game but that game is too light on content and lacks K7's overall punch. Still better than both NMH's put together, though.

The first No More Heroes is a classic.  It's not quite as good as Killer 7 in the same way that SoTC is not quite as a good as Ico, but it's one of the most original games out there.  Some many creative encounters and tons of great nods to film culture.

Sequel was terrible though.  But that's what happens when Suda doesn't direct.

No More Heroes was inane and repetitive game design with a shitty world map with a bad sense of humor. It was okay, hardly awful but I'll never understand the adulation that game has received and I was really pumped to play it. No More Heroes puts an emphasis on story in a bad way, making the game design come a far distant second in terms of emphasis. Killer 7 blended story with gameplay beautifully, was varied up the ass in terms of level design, featured an amazing cast, great boss fights, and was light on the stupid toilet humor (which I admittedly like in SotD).

Shadows of the Damned has more personality and better game principles than No More Heroes. It's simply the better game. I also prefer "dark" Grasshopper Manufacture games like K7 and SotD. NMH is fucking boring in comparison.

SoTD plays like a crappy C-tier game just like NMH and K7, the only difference is that it's easy as pie so there aren't frustrating parts that usually stem from shitty grasshopper gameplay.  But SoTD's story and characters and cutscenes, while alright, pale in comparison to K7 and NMH.  NMH had so many classic moments: The train ride where you fall asleep and it becomes a shmup, the giant cannon mini-game, HENRY, the boss who dies before you even fight him, the darth vader final boss, shinbu ninja, mine girl at the beach, every boss in NMH was fairly creative and original and the whole concept of moving up in this world of assassins was a fresh structure and because every boss was unique you looked forward to the next one.  The only thing that really sucked in NMH was grinding jobs between boss stages.  NMH2 had slightly better mini-games but 90% of the bosses were lame.

SotD does not in any way play like a crappy C-tier game. That game controls like aces. Third person shooters really do benefit from the 180 turn and the light/dark set up is far more interesting, mechanically, than mindlessly killing a bunch of nobodies. At least in Musou I can level up and have an rts mixed up with an rpg! NMH is flawed up the ass and like many "art" game it seems to be doing this on purpose.

K7 is hardly for artfags. I find K7 far more fun than NMH. Characters with different abilities and strengths? Different enemy types which force you to use your ENTIRE character list depending on who you're fighting, sometimes in the very same fight? Every level having a completely different objective? Resident Evil like puzzles? Huge levels with multiple routes? A robust (for the type of game it is) character customization system? Higher than average difficulty?

It's clear what the better game is.

Yeah, see I have no qualms about seeing Grasshopper games for what they are, jank ass gameplay that's barely above (or sometimes not) simple 2000 series gameplay, but everything else in the game is awesome and you play them for the craziness and creativity and overall fun love of video game/movie/anime culture.  But the gameplay sucks and will always suck and you just deal with it.  I've never enjoyed the gameplay much in any of suda's games, but I've enjoyed the experiences a heck of a lot.  Killer 7 was A+, but it would've been just as good if you hit A and the game played itself as you watched.

And people wonder why Suda 51 or other japafreak games sell 15 000 while western Call of Duty moves 20 000 000 units.

Japanese gaming industry slide into irrevelancy continues uninterrupted since OG Xbox launched. The void is near. Soon the only positives about Nippon games will be FF and DQ.

Japan still makes good games Borys :P  Suda games are not a good example of "great Japanese gaming", and there's no way anyone should expect Suda games to ever sell more than about 50-100k max.  People like fun, polished products.  They don't like janky budget games with wacky jappy humor.

Now Vanquish, that was a tragedy.  A++ gameplay, and great everything all around, but bomba bomba bomba.

I maintain that Killer 7 is a great game and don't understand why people call it janky or whatever when they pimp pre-RE4 Resident Evil. Just felt like Resident Evil type game to me.  Kill enemies, solve puzzles, explore neat locales, do cool shit.

What's janky about it? That you have to stop and shoot enemies?

It's in my top 5 favorite games from last generation and the story is only one reason why it is.

Certainly better than games like Ico or Shadow of the Colossus.

SotD is a slightly above average action game at best, and the least interesting of all Grasshopper games. Boring boss fights; uninspired, generic locales; weaponry that never rises above clichéd genre tropes. Unexciting. I'd expect this kind of game from middling western studio, but from one of the most creative Japanese development houses? Disappointed. The last thing we want from our j-devs is to cater to what they perceive as western tastes.

Great dialogue, though.

ramen's from china ya ignorant pole
That's arguable.

I mean, Japanese people will tell you that ramen is Chinese food, but Chinese people will tell you that the Japanese have changed it to their own tastes so much that it's nothing like the noodles-in-bone-based-soup to be found in China.

For that matter, the farce that passes for "pizza" in most Japanese stores could be considered its own original food -- an inferior reinterpretation along the lines of... I dunno, "Indian Superman"... It looks like Superman, but it ain't super, man.

OK, yeah. I've never heard "Coffee is from Canada," but I've heard plenty of people say that "pizza is actually American" -- due to deep-dish, super-thin-crust, and dual-crust variations.

Bu-bu-but, still -- I guess I'll have to concede this, and just say "I love Japanese ramen, but don't like Chinese ramen." Oddly, I like Chinese pot-stickers more than Japanese gyoza.

Maybe Oscar should read this 50,000 word story FAQ, then he'll realize how cool Killer 7 is. Oscar are you reading that? Are you ready to repent?? Because we're not leaving this thread until you agree that K7 is cool, man.

PLOT SPOILERS
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The hotel where you find out how each of the Smiths met their end is one of my favorite game sequences - the creepy revelation of how the Smiths' were betrayed, and the horrible symbolism of how each of the Smiths' powers are derived directly from the gruesome way in which they were murdered. it's awesomely powerful.

And while that plot FAQ goes a wee bit overboard, the best part about Killer 7 IS how its plot works on videogame, personal, political, and metaphysical levels. IT'S SOME SERIOUSLY BUDDHIST SHIT, MAN

no more heroes is just a really bland action game, there are a bunch of goons, they block high, you attack low, they block low,you attack high, the girl calls, she blabs something about "the garden of eden",then you fight a boss which attacks constantly until he drops his guard for 3 seconds and then you repeat all of it until you finish the game
<----
