can someone provide an easy, cliff notes version of what's going on? what is the sucker's prize? gameboy games or something?

I bought a launch 3DS.  I'd say I'm too dumb to figure it out on my own.

suckers who bought 3DS get "rewarded" with 20 ROMs (10 NES, 10 GBA) around "later this year", while smart consumers still say no and stick with their PSP/DS.

Maybe if 3ds had a user store with user made apps on the 3ds store there wouldn't be a 80 dollar price drop just months after release?

Maybe if you could do more than play games and...make cards into 3d, there wouldn't be need for a price drop.

This system reeks of ps3.

Instead of adapting market trends and the way the market is going (emphasis on user creation, apps;etc) to their direct competition (smartphones) they opt to do it the Nintendo way.

Failure. And this is why Vita needs access to the android store and a user SDK right out of the box.

if you're on the fence for one of these, some folks are saying they're gonna buy it now, use a price drop guarantee to get their $80 back, and still get the 20 VC games.  not a bad idea.

Where would this work? I might consider it. Maybe. Still, it's just 20 ROMs.

best buy has a 30-day price drop guarantee, i believe

i believe wal-mart has a price guarantee, too

amazon has the 3ds listed as releasing august 12, with a price drop guarantee - dunno what the fuck that's all about but it's probably just them clearing stock and refunding the difference on the 12th when the price change kicks in

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/07/29/3ds_losses/

Quote
Bloomberg Japan reports today that the new 3DS price point means Nintendo will incur a loss on every system sold. At a press conference in Osaka today, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata justified this by saying that such major moves were necessary in order to improve fiscal performance next year and beyond.

Nintendo slashed the price of the 3DS earlier today worldwide. In Japan, the system was cut from its launch price of ¥25,000 to ¥15,000. Early adopters who paid the initial price will be given access to 20 free Famicom (NES) and Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games, some exclusively.

In addition to the price cut, Nintendo announced lowered earnings targets for the year. A SMBC senior analyst told Bloomberg that 40% of the lowered revision was due to the 3DS price cut. An analyst as Securities Japan expressed surprise at how quick the price cut came.

The Securities Japan analyst suggested that investors might rush to sell Nintendo stock, although he doesn't believe the stock will drop below 10,000 yen. Nintendo stock ended the day at 14,000 yen, up 0.1% from the day prior. On the 27th, one day before the price cut and earnings report announcements, the stock had temporarily dropped to 13,770 yen, its lowest point since December 2005.

During earnings periods, Nintendo usually holds a Tokyo press briefing the day after its Osaka press briefing. It's likely that will get more information there.

you know there is one thing that's bothering me... if the original price was 250$ that means that a 10% is 25$ drop and 40% is 100$ drop which would mean a 40% price drop equals to a 150$ price

but since the price is 170$ shouldn't it be like a 32% price drop?

The 3DS is an extremely shitty deal at $249.  Nintendo had a lot of balls to release at that price, considering smartphones have been nibbling away at their marketshare and how the Vita, a handheld of infinitely greater value, was going to launch at the same price point.  Good for Nintendo for doing this.  Nintendo, when making a shitty decision, usually doubles down, not corrects.  This is a nice step in the right direction.

I think the whole "perceived value" thing with the 3DS was kind of dependant on the notion that glasses-free stereoscopic 3D would be lauded as something really positive and groundbreaking. now, after the feature has been pretty much universally panned, customers talking about having the 3D slider at zero all the time and so forth, the $250 just can't be justified any longer

too bad they named it "3DS", otherwise they might as well release a 2D only revision without the parallax barrier screen. huahua

What's the
GBA Roms:

Quote
By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

:rofl Nintendo  :lol

A store for old Nintendo hardware roms is the most worthless thing, especially if they don't provide as much of the library as licensing possibly allows. I have some great emulators on my PSP Go and PC and the entire library at my fingertips. All shit like this does is make my brain hurt and generate more bad will towards Nintendo.
