They're not making money on $170?

Good god. I assumed that thing cost less than a hundred bucks to manufacture
I think that's a lie. Wasn't the manufacturing cost breakdown like $20 less than that max?

Vita is going to do fine for wacky jappy.  Looks at psp over the last bunch of years.

mmm yes i agree but i'm starting to see a leeway of light of game i would like to play on 3DS with the likes of slime morimori 3,theathrythm,those level 5 games... meanwhile so far the only thing we have on vita is street fighter x tekken x dumbsonyexclusive

so it's hard for me to say
"down with the 3ds! bring the vita!" especialy now that 3ds is at a price i can buy it
of course if the 3ds continue going down this road with a lot of chance they are going to cancel all the interessing games and the problem is going to solve itself :smug

Yoshi's Island SNES VC is in limbo due to nintendo's insistence on 100% emulation, which has proven to be a problem with certain SNES games supporting special sound/graphics chips.  Releasing the gba rom is much less work in comparison.

I really don't believe we won't see gba vc introduced next year.  They've let the cat out of the bag and are backpedaling, but this proves they've been working on it.  I'll rebuy Zero Mission and Advance Wars 2 the moment I can.

My brother txted me today bitching about how he paid $250 for the system about a month ago and how it now got a price drop... I told him to STFU, he is over 100k in debt due to med school, he shouldn't be wasting his money on an overpriced system whose best game is a port of a 13 year old N64 game. I still don't have a 3DS due to the game library sucking, $170 is a much more reasonable price for the system though. We'll see what goes down at TGS...

I agree to an extent, there's going to be some sort of crash but I think it's mainly going to affect Nintendo since everyone else has their hands in the platforms that will be sustainable. I don't see tradtional home consoles going away but they're going to be less prominent.

Whoops!

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/07/29/3ds_sales_stop/

Quote
The notice says that the shop included a listing for the 3DS in a newspaper insert today (the 29th). Nintendo made its sudden price reduction announcement after the ad had gone to print.

Here's where the shop's actions are a bit extraordinary. As mentioned in the notice, the price drop will not take effect until August 11. Rather than selling the system at its current price until then, however, the shop will stop selling 3DS systems entirely until the price drop date.

Nintendo's 20 free Virtual Console games extends to anyone who buys a 3DS and connects to the e-Shop by 23:59 on the 10th, so it's unlikely that Nintendo intends for retailers to take this action.

Of course, availability issues shouldn't matter much for the 3DS. News of the system's sales difficulites and the price drop is prominent in all the major newspapers today, and on all the morning variety shows that show pics of the papers an read the articles. Potential 3DS customers probably know about the price drop, so unless there are a bunch of people who'd pay 10,000 yen for a collection of Game Boy Advance and Famicom games, expect the system's sales to plummet in next week's sales charts.

More at the link, including charts and graphs.

Gunpei is the father of the gameboy as well as the virtual boy as well as many well received Nintendo properties such as Metroid. A rare talent. He was killed in a car crash after leaving (or rather, being kicked out) Nintendo after the failure of the Virtual Boy.

He didn't get kicked out, though. He was relegated to doing nothing at Nintendo after the Virtual Boy failed and ended up leaving on his volition to work on the Wonderswan with Bandai. Still an awfully shitty situation for a guy who succeeded more than he failed.

The guy is fucking nuts though.  No doubt about that.

The guys on KJR still bring him up whenever they talk about corporate management of the team. He doesn't have any say in the operation of the team, that's what Howard Lincoln (yep, the guy from the old Howard and Nester comics from Nintendo Power) does, but he's still the majority owner.

edit: Huh. Some stuff says it's strictly NoA now, other stuff still has Yamauchi as being owner.

edit edit: Interesting stuff about Yamauchi and Yokoi:

Upon his return to Japan, Hiroshi Yamauchi decided to diversify the company. Some of the new areas he ventured into included a taxi company called Daiya, a love hotel with rooms rented by the hour, and individually portioned instant rice. All of these ventures eventually failed and brought the company into the brink of bankruptcy. However, one day, Yamauchi spotted a factory engineer named Gunpei Yokoi playing with a simple extendable claw, something Yokoi made to amuse himself during his break. Yamauchi ordered Yokoi to develop the extendable claw into a proper product. The product was named Urutora Hando (Ultra Hand) and was an instant hit. It was then that Hiroshi decided to move Nintendo’s focus into toy making. With an already established distribution system into department stores for its playing cards, the transition was a natural one for Nintendo. Hiroshi created a new department called Games and Setup, manned initially by only Yokoi and another employee who looked after the finances, and was situated in a warehouse in Kyoto for the purpose of research and development. Gunpei Yokoi was solely assigned to develop new products. Yokoi utilised his degree in engineering by developing what is now known as electric toys such as the Love Tester and a light gun using solar cells for targets. These electric toys were quite a novelty in the 60s when most other toys were simple in origin, such as toy blocks or dolls. Eventually Nintendo succeeded in establishing itself as a major player in the toy market.

I doubt a crash will ever remove the need of a console out of the marketplace.  Its more likely that the console might not be a primary game machine, but it will never go away entirely.  Of course I'm not as pessiimistic and I think things can be easily "saved" if they ever get their prices in check.  Software variety (when taking into account all platforms and avenues) is fine.

Now handheld gaming consoles surviving, I have no fucking idea.  I see more 8 year olds poking 800 dollar ipads and ithings these days than ds things.  Unfortuneatly thats just anectdotal so yeah, no fucking idea.

Thing is, I don't feel like i'm wasting money if I spend 2 bucks on a game I play for 30 min even. Just dicking around see what it's like. And here and there you'll hit something you put real hours in too.

Im currently waiting for that Soccer Story game to get a translation from Japanese.

Really hope Android gaming catches on even more so the amount of games will rival iOs, but I dont see that happening any time soon although it is picking up and I have enough to entertain me.

I'm far less pessimistic about a "crash". At least an Atari style crash of the 80's. More people are playing games now than ever before which was not the case during the Atari crash. It's simply spread across a very high number of platforms today which makes the accounting messy and not traditionally accurate. What I think will continue is a slow but steady redistribution of the market with all these new way to play games. And the upcoming cloud services of the future.

not really.  These games (and the system too apparently lol) are completely overpriced and reflect the gaming industry's denial about the cheapening of portable gaming.  $40 RE Mercs is terrible, but I'd like to play it, so I'd totally pirate it!

Stolen from a GAF thread. Maybe have already been posted but I'm too lazy to look at the early pages of the thread.

Quote
Good morning. Before accepting questions, there is one thing that I would like to address here.

Since the first fiscal quarter has limited importance within the annual business of game companies, it does not make much sense for me to make a detailed presentation on the business in that quarter, so I have not made such preparations for today. On the other hand, a number of people must have such doubts as, "Why does the company have to make such a drastic markdown now?" Please let me talk about that before the Q&A session.

First of all, we have made the decision to markdown the Nintendo 3DS because we recognize that the current situation surrounding the system is different from that before the launch and immediately after the launch.

Having strong momentum is very important for game platform businesses. Once momentum is lost, great power is needed to change that trend.

As we announced at the E3 show, which was held in Los Angeles this past June, we have a strong software lineup for Nintendo 3DS toward the end of this calendar year, with which we were thinking that we would be able to boost the hardware sales, but in terms of the current situation, for us to be able to help Nintendo 3DS to become a sound successor to Nintendo DS, and to get it back on track to its originally-anticipated sales pace for its wide expansion, we concluded that we needed to take drastic measures, and we decided to make the markdown.

Since we will carry out this markdown in a period when Nintendo 3DS does not have such anticipated titles as in the year-end sales season, some seem to have interpreted it as a hasty move.

It is true that a great portion of our sales and profits are generated during the year-end sales season. If we just focused on maximizing the impact of the markdown, it might make more sense for us to do so when a number of anticipated titles are to be launched. In fact, thinking in that way must be the norm, and a number of people must have anticipated that we would make the markdown during the year-end sales season or in fall this year. However, there are some specific reasons why we have decided to make the markdown at this time.

First, since the launch of Nintendo 3DS, one of the things we have learned is that it has taken longer than we had originally expected in order for the appeal of this product to widely spread. We feel that those who have experienced the system appreciate its attraction, but this appreciation has not necessarily been expanding at the speed which we had expected. For us to maximize the effect of the anticipated titles of this year end, it is necessary to greatly expand the installed base (before the launches of the anticipated titles) so that the appeal of the new software will be able to spread to consumers in a short period of time. Without creating such a circumstance, we would not be able to realize explosive sales in the year-end sales season. This is one reason for the markdown.

Another reason is, we thought that eliminating the concerns of future hardware expansion early on would make a great difference to how retailers and software publishers will allocate their energies. The retailers worldwide decide the allocations of store shelves and which products to focus on for the year-end sales season by looking at the results of the summer sales. Software publishers are currently reviewing which development teams will work on which projects, and the results of which shall be launched next year and beyond. Removing their concerns on the sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware will be very critical for us to be able to enrich the applicable software in the years to come. In fact, immediately after our announcement yesterday, Nintendo employees started to receive feedback from retailers and software publishers around the world, and this feedback is, in general, rather positive.

In short, we have concluded that, for Nintendo 3DS to expand enough to become the successor of Nintendo DS, we have to take a drastic approach.

>>>>>>Accordingly, we hope you will look at the long-term effect of the markdown, rather than the short-term one. More specifically, I hope you will at least try to see how it will play out over the next four months, until the end of the year-end sales season, before making any judgments.

On the other hand, a drastic markdown like this, before the mass-production effect can take place for the hardware, will naturally generate red ink on the hardware sales. As a result, a significant minus effect is expected on the profitability of the current fiscal year. Even though we understand this, for us to elevate Nintendo 3DS to be the platform that can sustain our business, we have concluded that we need to take the best possible measure we can take now, even at the cost of short-term profitability.

From Nintendo, "SUPER MARIO 3DLAND," to be launched in November, and "MARIO KART 7" in December are going to be two main titles for the year-end sales season. These software titles can appeal to a wide variety of audiences and have the potential to be purchased by a number of people. Also, the software lineup from the third-party software publishers will be enriched before the year-end sales season.

It is quite unusual for us to change the price in less than half a year from a product’s launch. I am aware that realizing both the short-term and the mid-to-long term profits is one of my responsibilities as part of the management. I feel greatly accountable for having to make the markdown shortly after the launch, for having damaged our consumers' trust, for having made a significant impact upon the financial forecasts, for the annual dividend now being expected to be significantly less than originally expected and for now forecasting that there will be no interim dividend.

We would like to fulfill our responsibilities by getting Nintendo 3DS back on its originally-expected sales track, to make it the successor to Nintendo DS and to recover the sales and profits in the next fiscal year and beyond.

However, for the management to show its accountability for the level of the operating loss of this time and the prospect of no interim dividend, we decided at the directors' meeting yesterday that we would reduce the compensation we will receive as the directors of the company. The directors’ compensation of the company constitutes a fixed portion and a variable portion which is decided by the actual results of the business performance. The decreased profit of the company is reflected as the decreased compensation in the variable portion or, more specifically, the bonus to be given at the end of this fiscal year. However, we understand that the management responsibility this time is heavier than usual, and we have decided to reduce the fixed compensation as well, by reducing it by 50% for the president, or me, a 30% reduction for the representative directors and a 20% reduction for the other directors.

Needless to say, the deduction of the fixed compensation is what we volunteered to do in order to show our sincere attitude and to fulfill our responsibility. We really must recover our financial performance and take Nintendo back into the position in the marketplace where it is well appreciated.

This is all that I wanted to tell you. Thank you.

Reducing executive compensation in light of poor company performance? How un-American!

Its always nice to see humble Iwata.  I'm kinda hoping we see some of their 3ds games come out at 30ish though.  Hardware price is just a fraction of the equation.

And for god sakes get cracking on a messaging/invite system and completing the estore.

My ipod touch's battery spazzed out just as warranty ended. Fuck Apple.
...ahem
I've previously posited there was gonna be a problem when they announced 40 dollar 3ds retail games.  Eshop content doesn't release at a fast enough clip to compete with IOS, so something's gotta change regarding those two things.

I think 3DS could still be big if they stopped selling DS tomorrow.

Well dunno if thats really Apple, but my iPod has been chugging along for over 3 years now :)

The 3DS will sell well once it gets some software and the DS fades. But ultimately it won't reach the Olympian heights the DS reached. The market has changed, smartphones are the new in thing. Nintendo should just sign a partnership deal with Apple to sell classic games on the iPhone

Die Nintendo, die!

just have to counteract the tears on gaf and reddit (where people are saying they're gonna buy one full price right now because Iwata took a pay cut.)  I love how people think he didn't do that out of obligation.

Will quote this

Quote
I'm far less pessimistic about a "crash". At least an Atari style crash of the 80's. More people are playing games now than ever before which was not the case during the Atari crash. It's simply spread across a very high number of platforms today which makes the accounting messy and not traditionally accurate. What I think will continue is a slow but steady redistribution of the market with all these new way to play games. And the upcoming cloud services of the future.

Market will self-adjust,reptilian age business models will become history.Nintendo problem is that market realized that games like Brain Training,Dogs,Cats, etc can be found elsewhere without premium price tags.

To be clear, there is a room for both--expensive and dirt cheap games.People will not pay $60 for next Brain Training but they will pay $60 for MW,Skyrim,GTA,Halo,Gears,Mario, etc.
In short dudebro audience is safe because you simply can't make a game like Skyrim for few bucks.

Smartphones are growing like crazy but they will also reach a point of saturation,in terms of software at least--and then you will see prices going up

I don't think there will be a crash but instead, harsh market corrections for developers and publishers that put all their eggs in a basket of a high budget game that can't move past 100,000 units.  We already saw that happening this generation but I think it will be even worse next generation.  If the title on the box is anything other than names "Halo" or "Madden" or "Call of Duty," there will be a lot of risk if budgets will continue to grow for the next generation.

Likewise, there could also be a crash of smartphone games with too much cheap shit flooding the marketplace.  The idea of a smartphone game crash (lots o' cheap shit) is reminiscent of the Atari days than what is going on with consoles now.

it's not gonna crash, people still want to buy games, they just don't want to pay $40 for a handheld game with little more content than and the same graphics as an iPhone game.  I'd like to know why 3DS games like bust-a-move are so pricy when they don't look like they'd be more expensive to develop than, say, a decent budget iPhone game that sells for a buck or two.

Looks like used 3DS systems are getting down to around $169 on amazon and ebay.  Tempting, but I know I won't play the roms and it'll be easy to find a used a one for around $140 or less pretty soon.

I just realised my financial situation is super fine and I can get my computer and ipod touch fixed soon (guess what I've been posting with!).  I have a 3 paycheck month in November which means $500+ and the 3ds is looking pretty good, especially if pilotwings and steel diver are marked down by then.  I just realised though that this is the first Nintendo portable with no announced Warioware or Advance Wars.  I kinda hope Oscar browses soon because I'm wondering if Warioware DIY and AW: Days of Ruin didn't perform well in america (not asking for specific numbers, just whether its likely these franchises will show up at some point)

I generally don't trust your opinions, no offense.  Pilotwings and Steel Diver look like good $20 games.

Vita is certainly going to have trouble outside of japan btw.

Does raise an interesting point though and Nintendo fans have done some awesome marketing for the Vita in this regard : We have games like "that bonus freebee out of Resident Evil" , Nintendo Dogs again, A fraction of Pilotwings, etc etc - all games where people are saying "oh it'd be an okay low cost game" - this invites comparisons with games on the iOS.  With the Vita Nintendo fans did a great job of reinforcing the comparison of the Vita to the PS3 to try and say how overpriced it was going to be, hilariously aiding the cause by asking people to "look at the tech!!" So now - people are looking at Vita in direct association to a fully fledged home console - if the games similarly match in that things are polished home console standard then as long as Vita can gain ground before the next power increment of the smartphones than they should at least carve out another market. I seriously believe Nintendo fans have done all the ground work the possibly could have been tricked into doing to help the Vita succeed - Sony's PR department have played Nfans like fools.

To be fair, Nintendo for the past six years has essentially been handsomely rewarded for pinching out half assed crapware.  They've raked in billions on underpowered tech + gimmick to mask the actual low value of their consoles and handhelds.  Nintendo just put their eggs in the wrong basket this time but their goals were the same: charging a premium price for unambitious technology with a gimmick.  I guess the question is whether tablet gaming will be on the rise or decline when the Wii U comes out.  The fact that you can only play with one tablet per Wii U is a fucking nightmare of an idea and if tablet gaming is on the decline when it comes out, Nintendo will have another turkey on their hands.
