System jumped to 207k for the week in japan.  Unfortuneatly we won't get a clearer picture until next month's NPD, PAL charts, and Media Create.  Although I don't like the idea of 40 dollar games, I don't want this segment of the industry to collapse into IOS ~standards~.  A happy median between pricing and functional interaction would be my preference.  For future releases,  Nintendo could benefit from releasing major tentpole stuff like Mario and Pokemon as retail (but NOT 40), while using their estore for the less popular metroid/starfox/famicomwars,etc type stuff.  And seriously, where the fuck is Warioware?

resident evil looks nice for the 3ds, but what's with the atrocious audio? sounds like the trailer audio was recorded separately through a digicam mic.  and so far, what has been shown looks boring.  doesn't seem to have action of RE4/5 or puzzles of previous games.  It's a lot of walking around, experiencing Resident Evil's inane plot.

Holy shit.  What was the earlier footage actually running on?

I was reviewing gamescom footage and I realised most of the upcoming lineup doesn't look too appealing.  Mario 3ds looks like a Crash Bandicoot Game, Kid Icarus seems to have terribad controls and too much gab.  And I frankly don't give a hoot or holler about Luigi's Mansion or Mario Kart.  If I did get one right now I'm looking at Steel Diver, Pilotwings, Mercenaries, Shadow Wars, Pokemon BW, and a handful of dsiware games.  That's not bad per se, but the only upcoming game that stands out to me is ... Animal Crossing.  Smash is a blind purchase but thats several years out.  I would like an indication of some Warioware/AdvanceWars/etc to feel confident about all this.

Turn in your ninthing card right now if you don't care about Luigi's Mansion 2. That game looks awesome.

Also RE Revelations is quite near the top for me, that game looks gooooood.

As for the rest, MK7 is MK, portable MKs are always great fun and this one should have robust online to boot; I'm iffy on Mario 3D's direction but I'll give EAD the benefit of the doubt after two Platformers of the Forever; I'm sure even if KI controls "badly" it will be fun in spite of the controls, and there's always gyro aiming.

Honestly Animal Crossing is the one retail first party game I would say I don't give a crap about as they haven't shown anything worthwhile at all yet, and this coming from a once-huge AC fan.

Luigi's Mansion and Mariokart are unappealing in the same way all mascot spinoff crap does.  I'm sure its fun or whatever, but I'm shallow enough to not enjoy a game over that.  Pokemon Snap/Pinball are my only exceptions to that rule.

LM2 is probably a pretty meaty game. I mean Next Level would have to try really hard to make it shorter than the first, and everything we've seen already makes it look a lot more varied. I think it'll be a solid A- effort that might end up surprising quite a few people.

This is fucked up, but I'm actually enjoying the 3DS. I like having buttons again after playing so much iPhone stuff.

The Zelda port is incredigood. It's Ishii's new company (the guy who made all the Mana games who quit Square a few years ago) and it's clear his guys know what they're doing. I had tried playing the N64 Zelda and it looked like deep-fried shit, not just low geometry but awful overall color usage. I'd say the remake looks pretty fucking awesome, even the opening village looks great as opposed to looking like a puke-green SGI demo from 1994.

Also playing lots of DOA during breaks with the guys at work and some Mercenaries on the go, Internet coop is great but I'm a huge mercs fan.

BTW there's a big 3DS sale at amazon. Zelda for 30, DOA for 27, Ridge for 20.

Quote
From the same French site that leaked Project Cafe (Wii U) first, 01net.

We are lucky to count among our –mostly anonymous - sources several foreign correspondants, some of them at key positions in the global gaming industry. We owe them, among other things, our early coverage of the Playstation Vita and Wii U hardware. One of them, who happens to be one of the very few Nintendo employees to dare break the code of silence, recently gave us a sobering account of the state of affairs inside the Big N structure.

More than any other sector, beit the music, motion picture, luxury or automotive industry, gaming is synonymous with emotional attachment to brands, devices and companies. And among all studios, publishers and makers, Nintendo enjoys by far the most sincere and dedicated following. Its logo, its many characters and IPs, its leading figures, like Shigeru Miyamoto, are the object of passionate scrutiny all around the world.

01net. writers are true Nintendo fans. One of us, William Audureau, recently published one of the most careful studies ever about the company’s most celebrated character (in French only so far). Our source has lived for, and eventually thanks to Nintendo, for most of his/her life. What s/he told us sounds like a wake-up call, inspired by the many troubles threatening the institution to which s/he has dedicated his/her life. For the same reasons, we decided to publish this information, as a five-part series running all week.

    Part 1/5
3DS: the early bird who couldn’t catch the worm

We have known for a long time that the 3DS had been launched early to undercut the mobile industry, and the upcoming next-gen Playstation Portable. But this rushed release, probably partially responsible for its technical limitations and a disappointing battery life (when compared to past performance), will eventually have much graver and far-ranging consequences.

Ooops… I think we forgot something
It’s a mistake beyond belief, but Nintendo honchos finally had to admit, after the 3DS went through the mass production and release stage, that they had made a terrible omission: a right analog stick was a requirement to provide a superior gaming experience. According to our source, right as you read those lines, Nintendo engineers are spending many sleepless nights working on an additional device, which should be sold separately for about 10 dollars. Its shape and fixation mechanism are still unknown, but it needs a tight grip on the right part of the console. Will it have to be removed everytime you want to close the 3DS?

    Feeling the pressure
Very recently, Nintendo asked a select group of developers to create titles specifically designed for two analog controls… even if that will entail an additional cost of 10 dollars per console to be played on currently available hardware. Although such noises rarely if ever reach the higher strata of the company, most Nintendo employees working with third-party developers are indeed feeling the heat, as disgruntled studios and publishers become more vocal in their disappointment.

    Developers stand in line
Third-party support is key to the 3DS’s potentiel success. Only they can enrich the software line-up, suffering so far from a relatively low volume of fresh titles, which makes Nintendo’s ongoing policy towards developers all the less coherent. The submission and approval process is described as very costly, time-consuming and often arbitrary in nature. Worse even, dev kits are still extremely scarce. Although no longer produced by Intelligent Systems – Nintendo’s hardware R&D arm – but outsourced to Tokyo Electric and Marubeni, dev kits are still produced at a ridiculously slow pace (300 units per month), and sold for a hefty price. As a consequence, even six months after the release, the waiting lists are getting more crowded, and many studios are still waiting for a chance to develop on the 3DS. This erratic situation is described by our source as a good example of serious management mishaps inside the Big N, that act as an impediment to developer relations and hardware adoption by consumers.

    What you can’t see…
According to our source, Nintendo is well aware that it has so far failed to convince the public that its 3D display technology was harmless. Many parents are refraining from buying the console for fear of adverse effects to their children’s eyesight. This innovative “glasses-free” 3D display technology, the console’s main selling point, could well prove a major stumbling block. The advertising issue, despite a vast deployment of demo units at the point of sale level, remains: how do you sell something you can’t show? In the wake of the early price-slashing and “3DS ambassadors” (20 free VC games) program announcements, Iwata’s welcoming of 2D (totally free of 3D content) games on the platform smells like capitulation.

This information corroborates several elements we obtained very recently from various sources. According to them, Nintendo is currently preparing a new 3DS for a 2012 release. This new version would radically tone down the whole “3D“ angle, with a new design and even probably a different name. In that perspective, the radical price-slashing, touted as a measure to boost sales, would also be a way to liquidate current stocks to make way for the sucessor…

    There’s a war raging on out there…
Some of the problems alluded to by our source could find a happy resolution, but let’s not forget the unrelentless assaults from the mobile industry, with its breathtaking race to the heights of computing power. Phone makers, like LG with its Optimus 3D smartphone, are even coming up with their own “glasses-free” 3D displays. If John Carmack’s predictions – of smartphones outgunning current last-gen home consoles in “a very short time” – ever came true, the 3DS’s future could seem bleak at best… but let’s not forget there’s always the next brand new Pokémon around the corner!

and dual-analog, better screen/better battery life system at a reasonable price will make me pull the trigger on the system.

How many people (like me) haven't bought one for the simple fact that everybody already knew that day 1 there would be a highly improved system revision a little further down the line.  We just didn't know how much better and how much sooner.  If its out round a year from the release of the OG 3DS and competitively priced I don't see how it could fail worse then then its predacessor did.

Nintendo stock is experiencing a sudden rise today. At one point, the stock managed to reach 9.7% above yesterday's level.

So what's up? Bloomberg explains that, among the reasons causing the spike, investors have learned that Nintendo will host some sort of 3DS related event on September 13.

Nintendo hasn't made any mention of a September event, so it's unclear what the investors are referring to. The Tokyo Game Show will be held from September 15 through September 18, but Nintendo, as usual, is not expected to participate. Perhaps Nintendo has something else planned just ahead of the show?

Reports of a redesigned 3DS have been flying around the internet after French website 01net claimed that this new model handheld will "radically tone down" the 3D effect and probably sport a different name.

They also report that the new model will feature twin analogue Circle Pads. As for current 3DS owners, they say that Nintendo engineers are "spending many sleepless nights working on an additional device" that would attach to the console and be sold separately for about $10.

Yet Nintendo told Official Nintendo Magazine this morning that "we do not comment on rumour and speculation."

Meanwhile, Andriasang report that Nintendo will be holding a 3DS event on 13 September ahead of the Tokyo Game Show where the company will be announcing a big title.

So do you think it is nonsense?

so, according to those French precogs, Nintendo is backtracking on the 3D (or, the 'in' gimmick they thought was supposed to sell buttloads of these things); and adding a second analog nub--both for a supposed redesign? And all this on the back of a premature price drop not several months into its existence? I dunno, seems like a lot of 'fuck you's' to early adopters on top of fracturing the userbase.

But if this redesign can do what the DS lite did for the original DS, Nintendo still might come out laughing at the end of this trainwreck.

Some of you are gullible bastards who don't pay attention to historical precedent regarding Nintendo.  There will be no revision featuring a right analog stick.  There may be a revision with better cameras, more flash mem, or a larger unit to house a bigger battery.  There's at least 5 other things they need to address before a right analog, which isn't the panacea its made out to be as the ds succeeded without one.  Its not some expectation of the mass market consumer (see smartphones)

By the way, that September 13th event is about announcing the exclusivity of the next portable Monster Hunter, and not a single hint about a redesign will be shared, mark my words.

When has a Nintendo system failed this spectacularly right out of the gate, with future prospects looking like it's doomed to the scrapheap of history? Oh right, the Virtualboy. Except that Nintendo was still going way strong with the Gameboy back then, the DS is on its last leg and the 3DS is a big 'ol bust. They have to do SOMETHING DRASTIC.

i could see them releasing a right analog dongle thing, packed in with certain games, they're certainly not opposed to having peripherals snapped into their systems
