Some of you are gullible bastards who don't pay attention to historical precedent regarding Nintendo.  There will be no revision featuring a right analog stick.  There may be a revision with better cameras, more flash mem, or a larger unit to house a bigger battery.  There's at least 5 other things they need to address before a right analog, which isn't the panacea its made out to be as the ds succeeded without one.  Its not some expectation of the mass market consumer (see smartphones)

When has a Nintendo system failed this spectacularly right out of the gate, with future prospects looking like it's doomed to the scrapheap of history? Oh right, the Virtualboy. Except that Nintendo was still going way strong with the Gameboy back then, the DS is on its last leg and the 3DS is a big 'ol bust. They have to do SOMETHING DRASTIC.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Like, actually RELEASE SOME GAMES. :teehee
[close]

The 3ds is not comparable to the virtua boy in the slightest.  Its 'failing' in that its not maintaining the momentum of the company.  Its problems are software pricing, lack of eshop content, lack of compelling upcoming software for the mass market, battery life and maybe some of their half assed online things. I'm not sure if messaging and invites really matter in the grand scheme though, although I would like it.  A second analog isn't a major variable in the equation at all.  The only thing it would accomplish is getting a handful of developers to release certain ip, which would be moot anyway if they don't address the primary concerns general consumers have with the  system.

Shoehorning in a second analog would be a mistake imo. They really just need to focus on getting better software on the system, and making their existing software better (marketplace looks like shit, doesn't use both screens, OS is lacking in certain areas). Outside of battery life the hardware seems good to me.

But at the end of the day kids want nintendo handhelds so nintendo will always dominate the handheld space.

I expect the 3DS won't do nearly as good as the DS.  It'll basically be PS2->PS3 all over again.  Meanwhile Vita will do about the same as the PSP which is nothing remarkable in the west, but great in Japan.

Dunno where that remaining marketshare will go.  I don't think phone gaming is really going to overtake anything, I'd wager on people just sticking to their DS lites and DSis and DS XLs for the next few years.

By the way, that September 13th event is about announcing the exclusivity of the next portable Monster Hunter, and not a single hint about a redesign will be shared, mark my words.

Ya I agree.

I also don't buy the redesign rumor but I thought it'd be fun to post it.

There's nothing to suggest that Nintendo sees a lack of a second analog as a major issue holding back the reception of the device.  It would quench the desires of a subset of nerdling forumites at least and catch a handful of japanese properties at best (because really, I don't think Western studios will ever take Nintendo portables seriously), and thats not worth all the ill will among the public such a drastic revision would entail.

Faux outrage is lame, be reasonable mang!  There's so much more legitimate stuff to bitch about.

Yup, although are we even going to care once the Vita is out?

it would *have* to use wireless

there isn't a single other port that could handle it on the unit

What if it was released as a shell, extending the sides of the 3DS unit a bit?

They release unobtrusive peripherals all the time, yes.  But they are for the most part elegant solutions that don't interfere with the device.  I don't see how they could incorporate a non obtrusive analog that doesnt change the size of the 3ds or prevents the unit from being closed.

I know second analog is a plus for you (back when I listened to the borecast) but it seems you're letting preferences interfere with practical logic.

why dont they just make the Wii U controller the new 3DS and frig it to be a portable? Then they can work on getting the Wii U to accept more than one unit.

I remember when we were laughing at Wii U because the controller seemed to make the 3DS irrelevant. Little did we know that Nintendo was doing that independently of Wii U.

my twitter feed seems to be increasing the number of "LEAVE 3DS ALONE :( :( :( I still love it" tweets lately too. I really wonder about people sometimes.

Sega never sank as low as Nintendo though when they were still making hardware.

They went out with a great console and some classic games untill their dying days. Much unlike Nintendo.

3DS is way too similar to DS,that is the main problem.Nintendo clogging retail with various iterations(DS,DS Lite,DSi,DSi XL) certainly didn't help.

I think that launch software was decent, the problem was that none of that screamed must buy...and future was(is) also pretty bleak, third party software in particular

Ninthings will buy 3DS for quality Nintendo stuff(Steel Diver lol) but why buy it now?
Wait until Nintendo releases some new Mario and then "jump in"

and there is this smartphone menace with tons of cheap games, targeting the same people that made DS popular

and people grow old,new iphone gen kids are coming...they don't give a shit about the past,NES,SNES,Sega---what is that, who cares...give them something archaic as 3DS and they will just laugh

I have a niece and nephew who are in like 6th and 4th grade (boy and a girl) and they both have iphones and they both are proficient with them. In parents with two solid incomes this isn't really that uncommon. It's also a status thing for the parents to a degree. Another reason why things are harder for Nintendo this go around. Iphones are much cooler than the 3DS even among the very young now. Plus free games.

Yeah I still see tons of kids with DSes around here. Then again, I live in a place where the hipster style never took over and people are still dressing like jersey shore guidos and wiggers from the 90's. "People" - who are these "people" ?

Sony exclusives act as a push - more of a push would be cheap ports/BC of PS2 games (Aka the greatest system library ever made) and in quantity.

Gamers with taste, aka, US market. :smug

But seriously, in which parts of the world did Sony's new IPs sell really well this gen?  Uncharted gets lots of internet buzz but even sales of the 2nd game dropped off significantly after the first month.

I agree that PS2 BC would be a much bigger selling point but Sony won't do that for fear of piracy.

if you are talking about devil survivor,it's not a remake more like an enchanced port which is silly since you can still buy the original thing and play it on your 3DS

that said i don't like SRPG much and this one didn't do much for me either but a lot of people seems to love it,you move your character like in a SRPG but everytime you attack or get attacked by an enemy it switches to a more traditional turn based dragon quest like system, there is a system that's quite similiar to the half turn system of nocturne where hitting weak spot give you more turn

compared to the original on the DS this one supposedly features voice acting and an extra scenario

Up there with Tactics Ogre PSP as best srpg this gen.  Think SMT battles mixed with a bit of FFT and Persona 3/4 but darker storyline.  If you like dark games about the end of the world, with demons and devils, and some animu characters (think P3/P4); you'll enjoy it.

I bought Zelda OoT because of your impressions btw; Now I need to turn on my 3DS for the first time since launch, lol.

Nano Assault looks surprisingly great.  Shinen has always done a bang up job with achieving graphical prowess on nintendo hardware, its just that the games themselves are of unpredictable quality.  I heard Nanostray 2 was alright though, so Nano Assault is definitely of interest.

Not much else is standing out to me though, although I love srpgs (only rpgs worth playing!) and devil survivor ~sounds` neat.

I don't mind playing these games but I don't want to own a 3DS for any longer than I want to or need to.  Most of the games in that thread simply look unappealing but I'm always game for a new Mario and Mario Kart and Starfox will give me a quick nostalgic trip.  Then again, I thought the DS was chock full of crapware and people think it had an amazing library.  Different tastes, I suppose.

So i was looking at andriasang and saw the list for tgs.

•11 DS games
•48 3DS games
•17 Xbox 360 games
•0 PlayStation 2 games
•22 PlayStation 3 games
•23 PlayStation Portable games
•7 PlayStation Vita games
•8 Wii games
•33 iPhone games
•33 Android games

But 15-20 of those 3ds titles are fucking PENS.  Literally pens for the thing.
