her: "whaaaa...i'm not having sex at 6:30 with the kid up..."

me: "no, today is a very special day!"

her: "uhhhh, labor day was last weekend..."

me: "thank GOD *someone* forgot!"

a fuckin' important day if you live in new york or have family/friends there. otherwise, it's a wholly arbitrary day you use to grandstand about your patriotism or search for some greater mystical/tribal meaning in the ruin of your wasted first-world life

Why are you waking your wife up at 6:30? is that some sort of sacrifice you gringos decided to do in honor of the 9/11 victims?

don't be specious. there are folks for whom 9/11 was important -- it made them feel like SOMETHING again, that as sort of self-assigned adjunct victims in a "national" tragedy, they became part of something mystical, something bigger than themselves and their useless obese dustbowl existences. and as ever with rubes, as soon as their maudlin yokelry is made public, there will also emerge snake oil mavens to take their time and dollar.

I honestly just want to forget about it.  Sad for those losts, but I was in the city at the time and I can see how some people would want to cope by just putting it behind them.

I was reading the in paper that many New Yorkers feel the same, not attending memorial services and moving on with their lives.  Everyone copes with tragedy and grief differently.  Not everyone is the "Never Forget" type.

Yeah dude I'm pretty sure most people are just having a normal day today. Unless we get a national holiday out of it, most people aren't gonna care.

Yup.  This came up at work the other day and I said the same thing.  There are people making "NEVER FORGET" Facebook status updates, then going back to whatever nonsense it was that they were doing.

I posted about it on facebook and twitter, but I really didn't see it as a world changing event. Cause I'm sorry americans but the rest of the world thought it was a tragic moment but not the moment that defied a generation or anything.

It changed the US and affected everyone visiting. Anyone that has set foot in an airport is setting foot into a world changed by the events.

Alot more people died in other events in recent history that no one cares about in America, so I don't honestly care too much about the overportrayal and signifigigance of this holiday. However it is terrible people died, but more people died at Hotel Rolwanda and all they got is a movie staring some french

Oh trust me I understand how tragic it is and how it affected america, I'm not going to downplay that, and I'll never attempt to justify the deaths of thousands. What I am saying is that the rest of the world was not changed by these events, at least not in a major way.

Basically its awful, and I do feel for those who were affected and I do respect those who risked their lives to help(you've seen this on facebook I bet). But I do feel that a lot of people have sadly taking this tragic event and made it into more of "we americans will have revenge!" and excuses for war than the death of innocent lives. I was happy with Osama's death in that it might finally bring closure to those who were affected, and I'm glad to here that some are moving on. Cause lord knows some can't let go of Pearl Harbor.

Nah, the rest of the world was affected, since we made sure to kill 50-500 times more people in retaliation.

I pretty much had going through my head Krugman's post on this:

The Years of Shame

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?

Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.

What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.

A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?

The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.

I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons

NEVER FORGET.  :'(

Quote
in a recent interview with Ben Stiller, Zoolander came up. The whole World Trade Center controversy was brought up (for those that do not know, the World Trade Centers were erased from the film). He said this regarding the situation, "I honestly regret taking the Trade Center out, in reality, it was there when we shot it, and I feel very connected to New York. On the Blu-ray release, I'm going to put it back in because I really feel it was not the right call on my part."

the commentators during yesterday's tennis matches reminded me.  I'm not thrilled to be so aloof because it's slightly messed up that I remembered the 9th as Dreamcast's 12th anniversary and not this.  At least no one cares about Final Fantasy 8's anniversary.

if not then, someone would start a "where were you when it happened?" thing.  Then a "When were you when Osama died?"

speaking of MMA, there was a dude on the train who was a huge beefy guy who had a gargantuan Tap Out tattoo on the back of his neck.  I wanted to take a photo for anthropological purposes but also didn't want to retrieve my phone after it had been forcibly placed into my rectum.

bash the NFL for tribalism, praise UFC. :rofl

I haven't payed much attention to any of the 10 year anniversary stuff. Obviously 911 changed the country and world, in many ways for the worse. There's literally no way to "forget" 911 given its impact on everything from flying to the daily cost of wars. So I don't need the entire media reminding me not to forget, or dwelling on the past.

For a few minutes today I remembered back to how I felt on that day; my mom was in Chicago, heading for the Sears building and I remember semi-panicing after someone on the news mentioned the building as a potential threat. But after that I was back to thinking about football, school, and what I'm gonna eat tonight.
