Tried this on both systems...didn't see much of a difference.

The netcode is not as bad as some have reported, but some matches were definitely pretty bad.  Way more good connections, however, so it's not as big a concern.

The game doesn't really feel all that new to me and isn't as exciting as Tekken Tag Tournament 2 has been- and I say this as someone who has generally preferred DOA in the past.  But I'm also exhausted from work and need to spend more time with it.

What they need to patch ASAP are the freezing issues.  The game locked up on me, several times, on both platforms.  No excuse for that.

And yup...boobs.  They're as ridiculous as ever.  Jiggly and now sweaty too.  They really did spend a lot of time on those physics!   :lol

Cross-posting from elsewhere:

The CE is much bigger than I expected!

Quote from: originalz
How does this game play compared to the older ones?  There's a new director and the new Ninja Gaiden game sucked so I'm kind of wary.  It seems like they didn't change anything then?  Always seemed like kind of a pointless sequel, and with TTT2 just out I'm not in any real rush to pick up another fighter.

It feels very similar to DOA4, but plays a bit slower.  This may be due to the added frames of animation.  The biggest noticeable game play additions are the power blow system (basically the DOA equivalent of a super move) and the revised side-step system...as in you can actually side-step now, although it's kind of slow.

I wouldn't call the game a pointless sequel...it's been almost seven years since DOA4 came out on 360 and 11 years since a DOA fighting game was on the Playstation platform.  Even with its problems, the online play is better than DOA4's.  Plus you have lots of new moves, a much better art style, and the typical array of balance changes.  Rig and Mila don't do much for me as new characters, however, and the added VF characters just feels lazy to me.  I would have preferred to have seen three new characters in their places.

Also you have to actually unlock stuff the old-school way- Akira, Sarah, and Pai must be unlocked by playing through the story mode and/or obtaining a certain number of titles.  Ditto for the playable boss.  Outfits also have to be unlocked.  Almost all of them can be obtained by beating the arcade mode multiple times with each character, but at least three of the females (Tina, Lisa, and Christie) have "legendary" swimsuit outfits that have to be earned by clearing some of the modes of the legendary difficulty.  You have to unlock master difficulty before legendary becomes available, too.  I tried the hardest difficulty available and by stage four was getting destroyed by the CPU.  It countered fucking EVERYTHING.   :lol

But yeah, right now I think TTT2 is the better game.  It just offers way, way more content and the roster depth is unmatched by any other 3D fighting game.  TTT2's online play is also far better and easily up there with Arc System Works' games as the best netcode available in any fighting game.

DOA5 also has zero customization options available and feels outdated in that regard.

Yeah the CE is pretty nice.

While I can't argue with you on any technical merit since I don't know anything about fighting games. I'll just talk about the game on face value.

The games additions are pretty welcome. The games equivalent of supers plays well with the environmental aspects of DoA, so the game kind of has it's own spin on supers. The fact that using then to push a player into certain danger zones adds some more thought into playing. It's nothing special, but it's pretty cool and does more for me then SC5's super addition.

The two new characters don't offend, but don't do anything fantastic. Rig seems like he may be fun to play though. Mila I have no thoughts on, she's pretty cute.

Honestly for me the biggest appeal are the new character designs. They just look fantastic. I don't miss the previous games look at all. And honestly I think the designs don't go too crazy, unless the character themsves are crazy. All the costume designs are restrained and fit the characters. They just look stylish.

You say that lack if character custimization is outdated, but I say god thank you. I've hated that about recent Tekken games. I like nicley designed costumes by an actual designer. I get the appeal of custimization. Having your own personal touch is cool. But for me the characters always look stupid. I'm glad DoA has yet to follow Tekken down that route.

Anyway, it's just a fun game, full of cheese, cheesecake, and accessible gameplay. It's a DoA game. I guess this is probably the most technical one, but I thought 4 was also pretty solid. But I'm no expert here. It dosent reinvit itself really beyond its designs, but I really like DoA and damn it's been awhile since 4(a game that still looks great).

Honestly for me, DoA is my favorite 3d fighting series and well I don't see that changing.

After more play time I'm enjoying the game a lot more, but it clearly feels rushed and I wish they delayed it for another 3-6 months to polish it up.

I spent most of my time playing the 360 version.  Started story mode (which is essentially just cut scenes > training fights > more cut scenes like the 3DS DOA Dimensions story mode) and unlocked Akira and Sarah, who have no new dialog and just repeat lines from VF5.  :lol

Then I popped the PS3 version in and found that it looked noticeably better.  The image was cleaner and the colors popped a bit more.  However, the game froze on me multiple times and then froze for several seconds, multiple times, in matches...when playing offline.

Turns out the throwdown option was the culprit.  I had it off on 360 and don't remember even having to turn it off in the first place, but once I disabled it the PS3 version ran smoothly.

Quote
Fans 'wanted sexualised characters' in Dead or Alive 5, claims director
"There's nothing wrong with having beautiful characters"

By Christine Caruana for CVG Australia

When Dead or Alive 5 was announced, it was said it would stay true to its roots, but would sport "a new, more mature, look." After fan feedback, we can scrap that last bit it.

The Dead or Alive series is probably best known for its female fighter's ample bosom. When director Yohei Shimbori, was told to tone down the sexual aspect, it was thought that the game would step away from that, and Dead or Alive 5 would still be a solid fighting game, but perhaps with a little less bounce.

A less sexualised Dead or Alive game was short lived though. Speaking to Gamasutra, Shimbori said that they "actually got a lot of feedback from people who were playing it, saying, 'We want bigger breasts. Make the characters more like that.' That was kind of surprising." Shimbori explains that as a director he tries to keep an open mind and really listen to what the fans want, so that is what Team Ninja did.

Ignoring the feedback "to tone down the sexiness of the game, and of the characters," Dead or Alive 5 has all the big breasted women the fans apparently want. Shimbori explains that there is a lot of power in "having a series behind you," and "there are existing fans out there, and you have to think about the people who have supported the series for so long, and you want to make sure that the game that you make appeals to them first, and satisfies those fans first."

Shimbori goes on to say that there is "still room for having sexualised aspects...If you have a solid fighting game system there, there's nothing wrong with having beautiful characters as a layer on top of that - that's another layer of entertainment that there's a need for. If there wasn't a need for it, people wouldn't have responded to the alpha demo like they did, and send us feedback."
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/370540/fans-wanted-sexualised-characters-in-dead-or-alive-5-claims-director/

I think a lot of the (default) outfits have been toned-down compared to the earlier games, but they went overboard with the breast size and jiggle physics.   It's more ridiculous than ever before.   :lol

Picked up the guide from Amazon.  It seems...OK.  Looks like it will come in handy for getting all the bonus missions in the story mode cleared, too.

I'm working towards getting the Legendary difficulty unlocked, but the CPU at higher difficulty settings is insanely, insanely cheap.  It was countering fucking EVERYTHING.

Beat Arcade Mode Legend difficulty, without continuing, with Tina by using a found-exploit: Just do back+punch+kick, with down+throw to follow-up.  Using rising kicks when getting up.

That's it...with that simple tactic, I destroyed the CPU on the hardest difficulty.   :lol

Apparently you can do this with other characters, so it won't be so bad getting Tina and Christie's hidden costumes.  Legend 100-man survival still seems like it's gonna be hell.

Also found that you CAN turn on an-game move list that shows what you can do after each button press, just like in the 3DS DOA Dimensions.  Awesome that this is in.

It looks like they're almost all old school DOA1 costumes and more VF5 outfits for the guest characters.  They gave one of Tina's DOA1 outfits to Mila.  Christie is the exception with her slut-leather jacket/pants/no shirt n' bra outfit back.

DLC set five came out this week.

Way more importantly, a huge patch is coming!

http://www.freestepdodge.com/threads/team-ninja-details-next-upcoming-patch-for-dead-or-alive-5.2090/

A few short moments ago, director Yohei Shimbori tweeted a flurry of tweets with info on the next upcoming patch for Dead or Alive 5, shedding light on what we can expect.

He offers up some exciting details on what we can look forward to, but did not confirm an exact date as to when the next patch will be rolling out. Nonetheless, some pretty nifty stuff awaits.

Here are the patch details that Shimbori noted:

Quote
-[D-YS] I've finally had a chance to check out a few of the tweaks, so here are a few bits of info about the next patch.

-[D-YS] First, it looks like we can clear up the huge lag that happened on some stages for online fights.

-[D-YS] Now you should be able to fight without worrying about what stage you're on.

-[D-YS] Next, you'll be able to view opponent information before the start of a ranked match.

-[D-YS] You'll see their name, connection speed, grade, etc. all before you actually accept the fight

-[D-YS] And good news for IPL, NEC, Season's Beatings, DID and all the other tournaments out there! We're adding an Exhibition Mode!

-[D-YS] You can unlock all the characters, (almost) all costumes, and all stages for offline versus matches

-[D-YS] There's still more in the works, but I'm only gonna talk about what I've actually seen myself. So stay tuned for more updates!

Still pretty impressive despite the video quality.

Looks like there's rosters spaces for 22 characters (DOA5 has 24)- Maybe the VF characters are being removed, although there's three of them...

oh right, panty shots.

sometimes i forget what it's like to be turned on by such simple things.  Just don't get too deep or else nothing will work except 400lb women scissoring on top of a bed until it breaks.

Dead or Alive 5 is receiving a “ver. 1.03” patch, which will allow you to upload match replays from the game directly to the Internet. The Xbox 360 version will allow for Facebook uploading, while the PlayStation 3 version will allow for both Facebook and YouTube. To demonstrate the feature, Team Ninja uploaded this video:

Director, Yohei Shimbori, says that other tweaks to the game are to be expected in the ver. 1.03 patch as well, but Team Ninja haven’t released a full patch list yet.

The big patch is hitting PS3 next Thursday and 360 the week after that.

LOTS of big changes to moves, health, and balancing, plus they are adding the Zack Island stage from the upcoming Vita version as a free download!  They also cite additional improvements to the online play.

Tina/Lisa/Christie's legendary costumes can also now be unlocked by fighting a set number of ranked matches.  200 ranked battles (with any combination of characters) gets you Lisa's outfit.  That's a lot of time spent in ranked, but still way better than the ridiculous survival mode requirement from before.

Cool, you can get all the characters and costumes unlocked just by playing ranked matches now.  I do wish this was just from playing online matches in general though- people play in lobbies in DOA.
