I got my dad Lord of the Rings extended blu ray boxset for his birthday.

We watched them over the weekend. It was my first time seeing the extended cuts and my first time in years watching the movies.

Still amazing to this day.

Return of the King is fucking amazing.

Can't wait for The Hobbit film. I read that book at least 5 times as a teenager. I even like the 70's cartoon!

In terms of the books I love The Hobbit even more than LOTR, and growing up reading it I always wanted to see Gandalf's side adventure he goes off on to fight Sauron and this film is finally giving me that.

If Peter Jackson delivers then I expect to love it more than FOTR. Plus Martin Freeman > Elijah Wood.

And I was worried PJ would miss out on the light fun element of the book with his addition of the Gandalf vs. Sauron material but the behind the scenes videos shows he is getting the humor with the dwarves (that glimpse of them going crazy at Bilbo's dinner table throwing plates and shit around and dancing) PERFECTLY.

He has the whole White Council stuff with Sauraman, the whole battle against Sauron. And we know there is a whole other elf sidestory going on with whatsherface from Lost having a large role as a elf and Orlando Bloom is down in NZ filming for 6 months, that is a bit more than a simple cameo.

I agree. Two films is overkill. They're probably going to milk the one large scale battle in the entire story.

It really isn't just The Hobbit. There is tons of other stuff he is having in there as well. I mean Legolas wasn't even in the Hobbit but Orlando Bloom is filming for 6 months. There is a lot more going on in this.

Legolas is going to be front and center in the Battle of the 5 armies from what I have read.

Tons of surfboarding Legolas and the like it seems but I don't give a fuck it's The Hobbit I can't wait.

I was never worried about PJ not getting the humor. LOTR still has some of the most memorable lines for humor. My wife and I throw around "But what about second breakfast?" all the time.

My worry was PJ's involvement in general. Given how well he handled LOTR I didn't want anyone else handling The Hobbit. The man GETS Tolkien.

Tolkien has his moments.

The Hobbit is really well written, lighthearted and and a fun read. I can read that book in two days.

Lord of the Rings is...kinda dry because Tolkien would go into all the more intricate details of middle earth moreso than he did with The Hobbit. The Fellowship of the Ring book was really good, but the Two Tower's is a slog to go through. Return of the King is more return to form.

I've never read The Silmarillion or the History of Middle Earth.

Yeah, Elijah Wood has been confirmed officially to be in The Hobbit playing Frodo Baggins.

As is Ian Holm as Bilbo.

The movies begin and end with Holm & Wood in bagend. Bilbo is telling the tale of The Hobbit to Frodo pre-LOTR. Ian Holm is narrating both movies.

The Godfather is the best trilogy with a sequential plot. That owes more to there being a dearth of good trilogies than the consistency of that one.
