Sam is my favorite character in the series.

This explains a lot.

Sam is often cited as the best character series. He's a fan favorite. He's honorable and noble, he's the one character NOT swayed by the ring, he kicks Shelob's ass while holding pots and pans on his back, in the Scour of the Shire he HAULS ASS, and he ends up with 13 - count them, THIRTEEN - children. On top of that, unlike in the films, Sam is quick witted and has a great sense of humor.

I can't think of a single character better than Sam in the Fellowship.

MAYBE Gimli.

Meh.

The only ones I'd probably put near Sam are Gimli or Boromir.

You saying you don't like Sam? What kinda of LotR fan doesn't like Sam? You'd put Merry and Pippin over Sam? And you're talking about terrible opinions?

The Aragorn I remember doubts himself: over his place on the thrown, over his relationship with Arwen, over his leadership of the fellowship. Aside from Frodo and maybe Pippin he doubts himself the most out of the Fellowship and at least Frodo has an excuse.

boromir was a weak bitch who died cuz he couldn't control himself

the emo stuff about aragorn was mostly added in the movies.  arwen was barely mentioned in the books, and iirc wasn't he just away from the throne to help gandalf?  he spent most of his time being a guide & leader that continually pushed people when they felt they couldn't go on.  then he killed the bad guys and became a king :bow2

I haven't read the books since I was 15 so I don't remember. But I definitely remember Aragorn blaming himself for fellowship falling about. I definitely preferred Gimli and Legolas over Aragorn.

Since it's been so long, I may re-read LotR. I grew up with the stories, so maybe I'll have a better appreciation as an adult.

OVerall the film added more depth to the characters, who were rather one dimensional in the novel. They had to play up the romance angle with Aragorn and Arwen, naturally. From what I've read they'll be doing the same thing with The Hobbit, adding some female elf (played by Kate from Lost, smh)

I don't see how that's a contradiction.

It's dry BECAUSE of descriptions of every single living thing, placing an emphasis more on the world by description rather than letting the audience fill in the blanks with their imaginations. At the same time, these descriptions are often flowery poems that bore the shit out of me. The result are one-dimensional characters, like PD said, because Tolkien places specific emphasis on the history of the world, and the land of Middle Earth moreso than their actions and character development.

I still really like the books but fuck.

I'm so torn on them.

If you've read the Fellowship of the Ring -- THE BEST LotR book -- then you know what I'm talking about. Read the Council meeting at Rivendell. It is like 10-15 pages of characters talking between each other. Just pure dialogue. Holy shit.  :S

I originally read the books when I was 14 and holy poop, that shit was tedium.

Sam is my favorite character in the series.

This explains a lot.

I bet finchers dragon tattoo will be better than the book. The trailer alone is already way better than it or the sweedish movie.

I haven't read the book but I do love the Swedish film. The swedish film already has the better looking chick so

I dare you to watch Mara's scenes in Youth in Revolt and say that again.

The Dark Knight: 8.7
Dark Knight Rises: Batman and Robin most likely

a 6.3 for Batman Begins?  That's generous.

I can't decide which is more boring, Batman Begins or Following.  I hated both.

I loved Batman Begins and really liked The Dark Knight but the endless teenagers on the internet treating the films like the greatest ever made and quoting the Joker nonstop and endless Nolan obsessions is just painful. I really really hope it isn't as bad when TDKR comes out like it was when TDK was everywhere.

They don't ruin the quality of the movies to me, still love them but the rabid fans of them are so horrible to witness at places like gaf.

Though it isn't the greatest trilogy ever, I'd put Indiana Jones (yes Temple of Doom is weak but Raiders is just that good), the original Star Wars, & The Lord of the Rings ahead of them still.

I'd have to go with Star Wars and Indiana Jones as well, if only because they were movies that I watched over and over again as a kid and can still rewatch and enjoy today.

Oh come the fuck on mups, Following I liked but I can agree on. Begins though? Dude when was the last time you've seen it.
A couple of months ago.  The first hour or so is good.  Not great, but good.  But then after it's fucking terrible.  The entire climax of the movie is a snoozefest and none of the characters are compelling.
