That VPN stuff is why I didn't want to go with it.

The other alternative is to email them back with my STEAM username/password and they will activate the game themselves.

i can see why they provide that option. setting up a vpn is a little much and not everyone will be able to figure it out. it's still pretty weird.

The animations in this game are really nice. The way the enemies drag themselves away and keep firing or just the way they react to different shots in body locations is pretty dope. Even the way they charge and dodge as they are running towards you is good.

That's kind of really shady.

EXACTLY.

but like i said. i understand why they are giving the option. this whole operation doesn't really seem that professional. that doesn't necessarily mean it's a scam, just that these are dudes trying to run a small business for gamers.

anyway. i just received my key. it's LITERALLY a picture of a back of a box  :lol
i'll be testing it tonight.

Maybe they should price drop faster.

$60 for most games around release fucking sucks. $35 seems more appealing, even if it is fucking shady.

$60 for a game, while expensive, is still a better deal than $35 for no game at all. Keys are going to be disabled shortly and I really don't think IntKeys will be that sympathetic to your plight.

i bought red orchestra 2 from getgamesgo (eurogamer's DD service) for $25, and i bought mafia 2 from ebay (it was a pic of the download code card you got when you bought certain nvidia cards back then) for $15

those are the only times i've bought from anywhere other than steam or retail

hopefully i don't get red orchestra pulled, but getgamesgo is a legit site and they even asked what region i was from so i think i am okay there

the mafia 2 thing was just some dude selling a download code for a game he already owned or wasn't interested in, probably

I'm pretty sure you're okay on both fronts there. It's mainly codes from smaller markets where prices are super-low [Russia, for instance], and require using a VPN to activate, that can get you into trouble.

Exactly - what you're talking about is just fine; I'm talking about buying Russian or Ukrainian keys and then activating them on your US Steam account. Companies are wising up to this workaround and geofencing is gonna get a lot stronger very very quickly.

Textures are really bad, but game looks fun with a cool setting.  Definitely has the best art in an ID game in forever.  Doom3 was about the most plain, boring, ugly game ever.  The lighting is the only thing that Doom3 has.

Might have even picked it up $50 since I owe a lot to Mr. Carmack and the great years of gaming he gave me in Jr. High, but $60 for a PC game is loloolol.  Will pick it up when it's $20-30.

Yeah, basically what the engine does is allow them to have the textures at the same quality whether camera is right in front of them or looking at them from across hundreds of feet of open desert. Unfortunately, that's only possible by keeping the texture quality low enough that it can run at a smooth 60 FPS on consoles. There's supposedly an uber-texture pack in existence, but id has really only hinted at the possibility of releasing a small part of it PC as basically a tech demo.

But the art though, so good.

Wait, how did John Carmack, the most intelligent programmer alive, think this would be a good idea?  Level of detail is there for a reason.  If everything is MAX TEXTURE no matter how close or far, you're going to kill performance.  Otoh if it's less than that you'll never get the sharp MAX TEXTURE in that 2-10 feet range where you normally do with a standard LoD.  It's a lose/lose situation.  I don't really get what his goal was in making an engine like that.  ???

Is this a joke? How do I get to that?

No, it's in the game:

http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/entertainment/games/111005-hidden-quake-wolfenstein-3d-rooms-in-rage

By the way, PC-owners need this:

Quote
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "8192"
cvaradd g_fov 20
set com_skipIntroVideo 1
set com_allowConsole 1
fc_maxcachememoryMB 1024
ik_enablesmoothing 0
vt_restart
vt_maxaniso 4
image_anisotropy 4
image_usecompression 0
jobs_numthreads 4
mem_phymemblocksizem 3072
m_rawinput 1

Create a file in the steam/steamapps/common/rage/base folder called "rageconfig.cfg" and copy those lines into it. Makes a huge difference.

Played the PS3 version for a little bit last night.  The way the textures have to load a little more detail when you get in close is annoying.  The game strikes me as just "all right."  It's like playing a simplified/streamlined Fallout 3 with outdated corridor shooting mechanics.  Hope the driving stuff is more interesting.

I'm really glad I bought this, extremely fun with no stupid emphasis on story to bog it down.

I'm personally starting to burn out on this a bit. The combat is still fun and is the best part. And I'm still on disc 1 so there is still a chance for things to get better but this doesn't strike me as an amazing title so far outside of some nice technical bits to it (even those technical bits are uneven.)

I feel like the structure of running around and doing quests does it no favors. I find myself wishing it was a purely linear game where I didn't have to do that stuff because everytime I do a quest it reminds of RDR but in a negative light by comparison.

It's not that I need a story in a shooter at all but if they were going to use this structure it would help a bit more if I cared about the story. Otherwise I would prefer a structure where they are just propelling me along like Gears or something and I didn't have to drive around.  And none of the setpieces so far have matched up with the best of what is currently going on in shooters so far. Still relatively early though so maybe that will change also.

This game reminds me of bulletstorm but in bulletstorm I enjoyed myself the more I played it. This game so far just keeps going on the same note.

I do like that little spider bot you can build. Like everything else in the game it animates extremely well and is just a neat little gadget.

I guess I'm getting fairly close to the end now, made it to the second "area". Played about 10 hours and I've really enjoyed it, especially after I got the technical stuff fixed with those startup options. So, yeah, I'm not disappointed with how the game has gone so far.

I do like the combat. For instance I just did a mission that I thought was pretty damn fun.

It's just all the other stuff I don't like along with the structure. So I think I'm going to focus on just doing the core missions ignoring all the bits I don't like.

Fallout 3 is an rpg with awful awful awful shooting mechanics and almost no level design.

Rage is an FPS with level design.

The problem is the game structures itself somewhat like a wanna be open world game so it invites some of those comparisons even if its a bit unwarranted.

after setting up the custom config the game is actually playable now. texture streaming isn't as blatant (i can spin around without catching it) and it plays much smoother @ 60fps.
also dat 8k texture

and the game is pretty ok so far. will sink more time in tomorrow

Reached the swap disc point in RAGE. For what its worth the game has picked up. The missions have been pretty good and the setpieces have gotten better from what I would call a very weak start in both categories.

I still don't like the driving parts or the "rpg" parts but the shooting bits are still fun and the mission design and immersion has gotten better. Story is crap and its unfortunate it actually tries to tell a story and fails at it but whatever. It's a shooter.

i dunno if it's the newest drivers from amd or what but the game's got weird glitches abound. like when i'm speaking with characters their animation will flicker and for a single frame a weird demon version of the character will pop up. i've been trying to get a screenshot but it happens too fast.
also in indoor locations like wellspring i have some really bad framedrops as i move around. like it's loading other parts of the location.
however when i'm outside in the wasteland there's no problem at all.

so far i've encountered more bugs with this than both Battlefield 3 beta and Dead Island

Didn't know this was 60fps. Pretty impressive but Carmack should go for 30fps on consoles.

Otherwise it wouldn't be "Cinematic".

It is a good engine and I wish they would license it out for other devs to use. For certain games it would be perfect.  Brink for example could have really benefited from the use of this engine. (Although it still would have had a crapload of other issues)

It does have flaws like with the uneven texture quality and the texture loading but I would like to see what a real dev could do with it outside of just the tech junkies id are.
