Well, having beat the game and given a little time to let it all sink in, here we go with a breakdown:

+Combat is really fun [especially with the wingstick]
+Great enemy animations
+Passable AI
+Some locations/areas look really, really good
+Strong, coherent art style
+A few fun diversions from the main game

-Lame ending [story and gameplay wise]
-No real variety outside of locations
-Textures up close are really low quality

Not a bad game, not a great game, but I had fun all the way through and don't have any regrets about my purchase. I'd buy a sequel, if one ever gets made.

IntKeys sent me the DLC key and not the game key. So i emailed their admins to advise. Apparently they aren't "in" right now.

fingers crossed.

I like how you deftly mixed use of the Cyrillic letters that happen to visually resemble the corresponding Roman letters with use of the ones that match the pronunciation (or just the font keybinding?), chosen case-by-case to maximize overall post impact.

Just got to Subway town. I'm really enjoying the game but I do wish the story was better. Especially since the voice acting is, in my opinion, pretty solid.

Do these crystals ever become worth more than $25? The guy in the beginning of the game told me they were super valuable so Ive been hoarding them.

There's a guy in Wellspring that well trade you an upgrade for 20 of them.

Enjoying the game, patch is nice and mostly fixes SOME things. I do find it funny that you can decline quests when most of the time you dont ACTUALLY have a choice

the story and plot progression is absolutely the worse thing about RAGE. i really don't think id knew what they were doing and bite off way too much on this one.

when it comes to the core FPS action, it's pretty great. the weapons all feel powerful and there's a surprising variety of them as well. fighting the enemies is really fun. id didn't screw that aspect up at all. this is just too ambitious of a project for these guys. the glue and holds all these FPS action segments up are just too shallow and feels amateur hour.

When i'm in the thick of it fighting dudes i'm into it. I'm all "f yeah this game is awesome!"
then i'm walking around a town talking with card-board cut out characters that literally say nothing or worth and i'm all "....this game is boring!"

I think if you simply make it a linear game with story progression from mission to mission that is a better framework than the fetch quest faux open world setup they decided to go with. The story is actively terrible. The quest structure is actively terrible. It actually makes me less likely to play the game that way as it ends up feeling more and more like a chore to do the missions. Too much fat in what should be a lean and mean game. Games like COD and Gears know what they are. RAGE feels like a game that at its core, is a good combat game, but they tried to make it more than what it really was.

The best part of the game is when you enter a creepy area and it looks nice and creepy music is playing. Or you feel isolated going into certain empty enviroments. That should have been the focus of the game. That's the best part of a post apocalyptic environment. That mad max feeling. Instead you end up being an errand boy doing lots of fetch quests in RAGE. Strip that stuff out and just focus on the world and have a more personal story.

they tried to make an FPS with aspects of open world and RPG thrown in. i can imagine a room full of developers who are known for DOOM and QUAKE all trying to figure out modern game design and reading "open world games 4 dummies"

they just basically took the concepts of a quality open world game/rpg and added it in without making it interesting or fun.

then there's the car racing stuff. i literally have no idea why that is in this game. it's not particularly fun and you get very little out of it aside from variety.

I don't think its a bad game. There are parts of it and missions of it that are really really fun.  But there is a pretty big chance I'm going to send it back to gamefly without finishing. I kinda feel like I've seen all the tricks of the game and I'm only really pushing myself to the end to get the achievements which isn't a good sign.

When people say they want longer FPS games as a general rule I don't agree with that. I think a game only needs to be long enough to cover whatever content is in the game. So a game like Deus Ex can be longer. But a rollercoaster style shooter doesn't need to be crazy long. I don't need 100 levels in my Doom. Just give me the most fun 15 levels you got and I'm fine.

I kinda feel this way about RAGE. Take out the boring missions and make a tighter leaner game.

I think they tried to reach too far and just didn't have the man-power to get there. If you watch the credits, the actual id team is really SMALL.

Doesn't really look like it. There's a studio for sound and VA recording and Bethesda/Zenimax corporate staff, that's it.

Went and looked back at the credits: 66 people on single-player, 24 on multiplayer, and 8 worked on the tools.

By the way, it's so much easier to appreciate how good Rage looks when there aren't textures loading in every time the camera moves.

the megatexture thing is a cool concept but i don't think it works out all the time. the lack of tessellation is annoying. everything is flat and has a "painted on" look. especially when you look at it closely. it is a nice looking game but just don't stop to admire it too long.

Everything up close looks low-res and muddy, everything further back looks ZOMG AMAZING. It's a definite trade-off there.

That could be fixed, but those unique textures take up a metric ton of space. We're just not at the level of storage capacity to really make the most of it.

With a little help from the internet, I found the Wolfenstein room, the Quake room, and the Doom room. With the latter being the most awesome of the three, since it actually has the E1M1 music.

I found this game to be really fun, at least as far as the combat was concerned. The negative reviews had me nervous but the shooting was awesome and that was the important part for me. Reviews that were worried about the story or that called out the art as bad or generic were pretty  ??? It definitely had it's problems but I dug it anyway. It could have been much better with the systems in place so I wouldn't mind a quick Rage 2 that fixes some of the problems and makes better use of the in game economy and gadget options (they were really fun but mostly optional, on normal difficulty anyway).

Legends of the Wasteland was quite fun too, I almost forgot to play it before I deleted the game (22 gigs is a lot to keep around).

The only thing about the game that's actually BAD is the ending, or lack thereof. Other than that, just a few things here and there that could definitely be improved with a sequel, although I'm not sure how interested id [or Zenimax] is in doing one.

woooo, no.  i'm gonna have to side with stoney and say that everything outside the combat levels is absolutely worthless.  the towns are pointless quest seek-and-finds and would have been better if you would have just met random npcs during the course of the game, half-life style.  the overworld is tiny and you spend most of your time on it going back and forth for fetch quests.  the car combat is simple, unsatisfying and fortunately easily ignorable.  the quests are nothing but "HEY PLAY THROUGH THIS LEVEL AGAIN & GET SOME USELESS MONEY!"  and the setting is lol in that you travel around white settlements killing gangs of random stereotypes.  i'm currently killing some YIE YIE YIE tomahawk-wielders.

id needs to go back to making solid-but-uninspired shoot-em-ups.

So I just finished this and with all the complaining about the final level and ending in this thread, I was expecting it to end abruptly and not follow a standard movie ending.  But the last level and ending were....fine?  I mean about 80% into the plot I got that the game was meant to be "Part 1" in a trilogy that will never happen because the game didn't sell that great, and for a "part 1" conclusion I thought it was fine.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The story progression was: Wake up in Wasteland, get your bearings and learn the situation, find out about the authority who are hunting for ark survivors like you, take safeguard in the resistance, learn the truth about what happened, work with the resistance to unleash a plan to infiltrate the motherbase of the enemy and wake up your rebel army to began the war in game 2.  The end.  Seems fine for what it is.

I think the only "non-ending" part that I felt was having the final room be a mass of enemies challenge rather than one GIANT SUPER BOSS, but since the story had yet to introduce a singular figure behind the authority, there wasn't anyone to fight!
[close]

One thing that surprised me was how short the credits were (not counting Bethesda publishing ones, I mean the actual ID developer credits).  Seems like the game was made with a fairly small team by modern standards.  You would think that would keep the game profitable even with lower sales, but who knows.

The gunplay was really quite good.  All the weapons looked and felt just right, the way the 2ndary weapons worked into the combat was excellent and fun.  The various ammo types were cool.

The only downside of having all these combat options is that there's SO MANY BUTTONS.  Whether on a keyboard, having to use the F1-F4s + Q and double tapping or triple tapping weapon button to change ammo types or on a X360 controller where there REALLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN A WEAPON CIRCLE with every weapon because having only 4 quick select when there are so many useful guns and ammo can be scarce is silly.  I think they could have streamlined the controls a bit while still keeping the options.

Visually there's not much to say, the game is freaking gorgeous.  One of the most impressive looking games ever on the right PC.  I never had any weird texture pop-in or any super low res textures.  Played it post-patches and it looked like that 8k textures cfg the entire time.  Very impressive art direction and technology and never dropped a frame from 60fps.  There was good variety in the different levels, except for the optional backtracking and the time you had to go through Dead City again.  A good range of dead buildings, nature, and machinery.  The character models are probably up there with Crysis as the best out there and the animation is ridiculously fluid and good for an FPS.

The hub stuff was really pointless.  I liked the two cities because of how cool they looked, but they didn't really serve a purpose.  Was not a fan of picking up random junk all throughout the levels to sell and then buy ammo and stuff.  I think the game would have been better without an economy and you just get ammo pickups in levels.  Driving controlled well enough and looked nice, but was ultimately pointless as the world was VERY tiny and you'd get from the hub to the next mission in like 60 seconds.  Might as well just have warped to it.

The level design was alright.  There weren't many GREAT levels (Jackal Canyon was GREAT), but they weren't copy & paste boring level designs that you see in a lot of FPS either.  I'd say the level design was at least acceptable.

Overall as someone who prefers FPS games in interesting settings rather than military shooter #452525 and enjoys games with good gun combat, RAGE was a solid play.  It's missing that level design and creativity to put it with the best FPS games, but the combat and visuals definitely put it up a lot of the pack.  For the $15 I paid at the steam sale and the 10 hours of my life it took up, it was worth the experience.  I'd love to play a RAGE 2 with improvements but I don't see it happening.  Oh well.  Game is the definition of a B game.

I did like it MUCH more than Doom 3 though, so that is something.  Doom 3 got boring really quickly fighting in the same corridor environments over and over and over for 20 hours.  The location variety in RAGE and the more varied combat options (plus being a shorter length and straight to the point) made RAGE a much more entertaining experience.  I hope they take some of the things they learned from RAGE and stick it into Doom 4.
