Sad about Steve Jobs. On par with Henry Ford, Carnegie and Edison.

This is quite sensible, although Edison is a bridge too far. This is what he was really good at: Business and marketing, with a bit of invention on the side.

People are basically attributing all of 20th/21st century culture to him. Artists, writers, movie-makers all gushing about how Jobs made everything they do possible. Nonsense. It would all have happened without him, with the likely exception of Pixar (which is a huge accomplishment of course). It's not like Photoshop can't run on PC, people. Or that mp3 players would never have become popular without iPods. What, we'd all still be listening to tape Walkmans or Minidisc players?

Agreed. He was an inventor, although his inventions aren't nearly as important to daily life as Ford's or Edison's; we're basically comparing the Wright Brothers to Willy Wonka here.

Imagine if Jobs had died in say 2003 instead of 2011. How would he be remembered differently?

more importantly, would it have delayed the hipster explosion of the late 00s?

What's weird is that I'm an apple fan (I own a ton of their products), I was saddened by his untimely death (especially given that he had a lot more he could have done, given apple's suddenly bottomless cash position and market share...), I have no reason to dislike him as a person....and these fucking people are STILL driving me crazy!

I'm sure everyone's twitter feeds are the same. People that you thought were perfectly sane members of society revealed as drooling idiots.

Comparing him to JFK and John Lennon is just...odd.

But yeah for the tech industry he is very much at the same level of a Henry Ford. I can't see how anyone could deny that. As a inventor he was in a class of his own. But to compare him to figures out of the business world is starting to get over the top.

Just for the turn-around he brought to Apple in the last decade he has to be respected business wise, Apple isn't the #1 tech company in the world now for nothing. I doubt there is very many people here who haven't bought at least one Apple product since he took over as CEO about a decade ago. And of course Pixar. He wasn't the creative leader of the films, that was Lassetter but Pixar would be gone and dead in the 80's and never have made a single film without Jobs clearly.

You can "lolz hipsters" and rightfully so, they are treating this like it is the death of some sort of religious icon which is just embarrassing but as a modern day business man and CEO? The guy had no equal these past 10 years.

I knew once I got this on my phone after I woke up from my nap that I would be avoiding facebook, twitter, and tech blogs for days.  I love Steve Jobs and I do think he was a modern genius in innovation, invention, and business, but I just can't take people publicly RIP-ing him just so they can.  I'm sad, quite sad actually, but I can't deal with what some people are probably saying.

I dunno, Edison was also good at pilfering other people's ideas for his own, and making significant improvements to others' ideas... and to getting inferior versions to sell as well!

I like Apple.  I like Jobs.  I think he was an important guy.  I think it's sad that he's gone.  But the general reaction is pretty much this:

and I hate that it seems cynical by comparison.  To me, cynical is making a bleak Apple logo with Jobs' face in it literally moments after he died.  How is that an actual reaction.

I wouldn't say that. He definitely was a visionary, but he wasn't an inventor so much as he was a businessman. The man helped turn around Apple from what it became in the 90's (which is to say, a joke) to THE leading company in the world in a matter of years. Anyone who argues that the man lacked vision is foolish. And this is without the mentioning of Pixar.

It really depends on the person you're comparing him to that makes the statement hyperbolic because in the past, Jobs had Woz who helped engineer and design the computers, whereas Jobs stood as the business guy. So I would think Edison is a poor example. But he's most definitely on par with Conrad Hilton/Walt Disney type of influence.

Leading in what? Their market value is hugely overinflated, much like Nintendo's at the time of the Wii's height. They are just one of many players.

I don't fucking care he was a brilliant businessman, man. It's just money, I don't bow to money.
