Gamestop isn't hurt by any of these practices. They still sell the game used. And people will still buy it used. The only people getting screwed here are normal consumers because we lose rights on our ability to sell goods second hand. People need to stop this "Screw Gamestop!" shit because we are the ones getting screwed.

I'm no idiot though. This is the way things are going in the future. It still annoys me how companies have to lie though to justify what they are doing. (EA: "We need to pay for servers" on used copies) Just have the balls to say we don't want you selling our software and we will screw you any chance we get to stop you from doing so. It's their right. But at least be honest about what is going on.

That being said I'll still play (meaning rent and beat Batman through Gamefly.) I'll even consider buying the pass based on how much content I'm missing. So I'm very realistic about the whole thing. There are other games I would never touch or buy because of online passes. But Batman most likely will be so good that I'll hold my nose and do what it takes. I go on a case by case basis.

Meh... KMart is doing technically B1 G1 50% off. TRU's deal works out to ~$44 each game

i don't think i'll keel over dead from the stress of waiting to play a game which will be exactly the same a couple of months from now at $35 during a holiday sale

Might as well wait for the inevitable GOTY edition.

Got every Riddler challenge done in AA. Got all the Arkham story things too, last one was real hard. Started a game on hard mode, and it's not too bad, it's just hard adjusting because I'm so accustomed to the button prompts.

In Batman:AA, I hadn't realized there are no combat prompts in Hard mode. :lol -- I'd never make it through that.

re:online pass
It's maybe unkind to the customers who are on a play-and-flip-for-credit schedule. They're getting less, gamestop is probably not making any less. It's a little sad that things have come to this: locked on-disc content at launch.  :-\

As a developer, and as someone who wants to see other developers get paid, I try to buy new and buy close to launch if it's something in which I'm interested (though this is frequently influenced by The Backlog).

I wish there was a PR campaign by a joint venture of publishers, saying "If you buy used, you're the store's customer. If you buy new, your our customer."

I'm well-familiar with the argument about reselling books and music, but videogames as a medium have a much shorter shelf-life.

Are there other industries who when faced with decline nickel and dime their existing customers into oblivion rather than adjust their strategy?

There probably are but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Yes. Many, in fact. Let's take the auto industry.

It's the equivalent of buying a new car. You buy a new car and you get satellite radio and sweet shit on top of the purchase of the vehicle. Buy used, and you won't get cool features like that because you aren't directly supporting x car maker, you're supporting x car dealer.

This is the same idea. If you buy new, and support WB games and Rocksteady, you get Catwoman playable. After all, you're a paying support of Rocksteady. Catwoman is the satellite radio equivalent. Not required, but a bonus and it comes with the game for free if you buy new. If you buy used, you are supporting whoever you bought it from -- in most cases, Gamestop -- and in order to play as Catwoman you need to shell out some bucks on top of that used game. Makes sense.

This punishes used games sells and most definitely punishes used game sellers by taking back customers that are lost in the used game market.

You guys should be glad they're doing this as it's a total fuck off to Gamestop, who sucks. Why are you even complaining? Buy new, no problems. The game will likely be available for 40 bucks new on amazon in one month or two anyways, so stop bitching and shut the fuck up. The only people who are being nickel and dimed in this case are people who are buying used. If you buy new, this does not affect you in any way.

Batman: Arkham City is a fine way of handling dlc. Saints Row the Third and its multiple dlc's (cheats have to be bought through dlc now fyi) aren't.

fuck this VIP pass shit, don't support this turd.

edit: actually read the thread. It's not as bad if you get the pass by buying the game new, but locked on-disc content is still a cop out.

Whats worse is the morans who forked out for 'epic' edition of GoW3 (can't remember how much it was but it was 3 digits) don't even get the GoW VIP pass. Owned

Oh wait, you have to have the code AND be online to use the catwoman stuff? That sucks.

Since when has this been true for any DLC. You just have to use the code, then you DL the DLC.

The whole "issue" is for people who dont have internet available, or some luddite excuse.

The Batman: Arkham City new copy-only Catwoman content issue won't be affecting used sales at GameStop, as an internal memo reveals that customers purchasing the game preowned will score a Catwoman code as well.

Sent to us by an anonymous tipster and since verified with GameStop retail locations, used copies of Batman: Arkham City will feature a code to download the full Catwoman content pack printed on the customer's receipt. Normally this code would only be available in a new copy of the game, with second-hand owners forced to purchase the content as a $10 download.

GameStop and Warner Bros. had a similar deal in place for Mortal Kombat, allowing the retailer to print out online passes with used copies so customers would avoid the additional purchase.

We've reached out to Warner Bros. to clarify the reasoning behind the move, which seems to counteract the purpose of having the code in new copies in the first place.

To be fair there are two interpretations to what they are doing.

A.) Gamestop paid Warner a certain amount of money for these codes. or
B.) Gamestop said fuck you Warner, we'll order a smaller amount of Batman and Warner just gave up the codes.

Either way its not like Warner is some noble giant looking out for gamers.

Buying games at discount is worse than piracy. You are starving poor hard working devs.

For what its worth this is my last post on this stuff. I honestly don't really care about this "issue". It is what it is and all the internet arguing about it doesn't change one damn thing. Hopefully I get the game next week and am able to talk about actual gameplay stuff.

Note to Rocksteady: putting minions in every boss fight or mid-boss fight does not always equate to tension or even good boss design. STOP USING THEM. The boss fights in Arkham Asylum are shit, and this is coming from someone who loves the combat system in your game, due to the over-reliance of minions in fights that make absolutely no sense (hint: Poison Ivy). I hope to god that AC's bosses do not have the same issue.
