Well, while there's substantial overlap in that demographic, the one year I worked at faire in college, there's also very limited interaction across the two subcultures. There's SCA, who I think are basically roleplaying a medieval overlay on our modern lives, with lords, counts, barons, and such, and practice with weapons in war-like style as part of their roleplaying... and then there are faire-geeks, who run around speaking like pirates and scoffing at the idea of bearing arms in a Renaissance England re-creation.
