Hmmm. It seems like you have the option of unlocking a quest line about destroying the dark brotherhood rather than joining them. Which to do, which to do?

Take the mission to destroy the dark brotherhood if you're a white knight type that likes to defend girls' honor on the internet.

i never would have though that in 2011 my top three games would all be RPGs. my gaming taste has changed quite a bit.

Skyrim, Witcher 2... and Dark Souls?

I need to give more love to BF3 but it's hard to tear myself from Skyrim. Kinda like Dark Souls when I first got it...

BF3 IS really great. I've put 30 hours in to it already but I think it just is what it is. It's not the ultimate experience. I dunno. I need to play Karkand before I can render my final judgement.

But yeah, Skyrim, Witcher 2, and Dark Souls.

It makes me want to go to a mead hall right now.

I love how it turns into the Morrowind theme at the 2:10 mark.

To follow up on Great Rumbler's post I think they finally found the right balance for me in being accessible yet still fun and interesting. The prior titles for me were something I intellectually liked the idea of but never found to actually be fun to play and also confusing titles that didn't bother to try to ease you into the game. Even the one that forum types loved like Morrowind and Daggerfall just didn't click with me. This one clicked. And I think its because they learned so many lessons from Fallout that there should be a balance for the old school nerds and new people who want to play these games but were put off by the titles in the past.

I did like that you can get quest items outside of a quest. I did one early on, grabbed some item in a dungeon and when it came time to do the actual quest my guy was all like "oh you mean this item I already got because I'm awesome :smug "

problem was i was already deep in the dungeon.

instead I went all Dark Souls on the game and shot arrows at the boss from a hallway then hid until i was "hidden".
rinse repeat. now I have a mask that makes magicka recharge 100% faster.

He's just a bandit guy that's in one of the Dwemer ruins, easy to accidentally kill if you do a lot of exploring before that quest. Although there is a second [optional] target.

Frost Dragon was scary hard. I had to use all the abilities I had trained up to that point. I made full use of an invisibility potion I made to get a sneak critical on it (which took away half its life). I then used my potion of Fortify One-Hand, Frost Resist and drank through a couple of Health and Stamina restore potions throughout the battle. Also used a shout that speeds up my weapon strikes. I never had to resort to fully using all my abilities in one battle in Oblivion.

yeah battles here are a lot more challenging and fun.  you have to really utilize everything you have and have trained, i love it.  the troll on the 7,000 steps was super hard, and i had to do all sorts of different things before i finally killed him.

mostly me and lydia pinned him and shield bashed, kite, shout, hit once, run away, shield bash.  every time i put a poision on my sword, stamina, health, whatever to make my one hit actually mean something. he would 1hKO me so it was quite quite scary, and a huge victory for me :)

i'm on the harder difficulty so much fun

Last night, I was in Riften and this guy comes up to me and is all like "You best not be starting trouble round these parts blah blah blah" and while he's talking I hear ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR and I see townspeople running around and grabbing their bows and I'm like "OMG DUDE, QUIT TALKING TO ME" but I couldn't get out of the conversation, then all of sudden this Blood Dragon lands right on top of us and lights both of us up. He decided he didn't have much else to say when he was on fire.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-11-16-skyrim-sells-over-3-5-million-in-48-hours

Quote
Superb fantasy role-playing game Skyrim sold over 3.5 million units in 48 hours, Bethesda has revealed.

Bethesda expects Skyrim launch units to generate over $450 million in global retail sales. By comparison, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 made $400 million in one day, and sold over 6.5 million units in the US and UK alone.

Bethesda shipped seven million units of Skyrim for launch. More than 50 per cent of launch units were sold in the first 48 hours, which means Skyrim sold over 3.5 million units in that period.

Skyrim set a record for concurrent players on Steam - a whopping 280,000 played in the first 24 hours of release.

"We are grateful for the fans' response to Skyrim," said Robert Altman, Chairman and CEO of ZeniMax Media.

"Todd Howard and his team at Bethesda Game Studios have crafted a very special game. Anticipation forSkyrim has surpassed any game in our company's history, and we are pleased that sales and reviews have reflected the quality and hours of amazing gameplay it provides."

"Without a doubt, this has been our most ambitious project ever," said Todd Howard, Game Director on Skyrim. "After over three years of development, we're finally excited to get it into everyone's hands."

Oblivion, which launched in March 2006 - only a few months after the Xbox 360 - shipped 1.7 million copies. Fallout 3 shipped 4.7 million for launch in October 2008, which amounted to a potential $300 million dollars in revenue. Fallout: New Vegas, which launched in October 2010, shipped 5 million units and generated over $300 million.

The difference is this is a 60 hour minimum quality single player experience. There's about a handful of those every generation. It's not typical in other words.
