i watched the first few episodes,i liked the animation and the music but the complete lack of plot or continuity killed all my interess for it

derpderp Come on, magus, you're a walking parody of yourself at this point.

I have this feeling that Big O would have been better if it wasn't a giant robot anime and instead the gritty, noir detective anime it tries to be most of the time. The music, for the most part, fits that better than giant robot fighting.

I do kind of agree with you there, but a gritty, noir detective anime is a much harder sell than a gritty, noir detective anime with GIANT ROBOTS SMASHING STUFF AND LASERS. Though a Monster series did get made, so what do I know? Anyway, the robot fights ARE pretty cool, as is the music that's more fitting for giant robot fights.

Oh, and this is probably my favorite episode of The Big O:

It's the same show made like 52 times,
Sounds like shounen.

Speaking of anime of that ilk, Ergo Proxy imo is one of the biggest wastes of time in amine. It's "deep" and "edgy" content feels really forced and tacked on.

Come at me bros and bras.

The Big O is only 26 episodes [half of which didn't come out until several years later] and it's certainly not the same thing over and over.

It's "deep" and "edgy" content feels really forced and tacked on.

What does this mean exactly? Nothing I saw in Ergo Proxy screamed "edgy" to me, it wasn't like they were tossing around explicit sex and violence or trying to push some kind of radical storyline. It was mostly, through the middle of the show, a series of just really weird, random stuff [like the great game show episode].

This exactly. They added a ton of non nonsensical bullshit for the sake of it. It didn't help the plot, pacing or even character development. That poop was there just cause someone wanted to be all abstract and cool.

It was the main characters travelling through a twisted, surreal parody of the real world, ruled over by lonely godlings with delusions of greatness, which was at least as interesting as what most cyberpunk works go for.

Ergo Proxy goes a different route, showing a decayed world that has fractured into isolated zones, each controlled by a powerful being which imparts its own quirks and concepts into their zone. I was a bit disappointed that the show went away from where it seemed to be going in the first 5-6 episodes, but the middle half was still interesting in its own right.

I'll never like it, it lost focus too much imo. Hey I didn't even mind when Samurai Champloo did it, nor Casshern sins, nor michiko to hatchin . In fact I loved those. Proxy just seemed really artificially "deep" to me. It's like the director wanted to put some random arbitrary hidden subtext in ever scene and none of it worked, nor was it ever relevant.

I know I'm not being terribly clear vocalizing how I feel about it, but best I can say is it felt very manufactured and not like a natural story.

For me Ergo Proxy was a show with great atmosphere, interesting characters, and a collection of moments with those characters that are imo fairly meaningful even if a larger theme or plot isn't doing its job to keep things tied together.

I listen to the track that appeals to me most and 9 times out of 10 that's the Japanese track. I'm not going to get into some huge argument about which is better or why because I honestly don't care what other people prefer.

what I like about the original japanese language track is that I don't understand it. English voice work often highlights the flaws of the writing and if the voice actors are bad it detracts from my enjoyment.

dubs i like:

most anime feature films dubbed in english
most ova's
stuff like cowboy bebop, gundam, are pretty good in English.

I mean, I watch subbed anime, but I just don't see how one is better than the other and most of the time the Japanese voice track has weird shit.

I think the one exception I can think of is One Piece. One Piece in Japanese is amazing because the voice work is so fucking good. The funi dub of One Piece is great, though.

Anyone checked out Towa no Quon yet?  I didn't even realize it had come out on video yet, but apparently ep1-3 are (I think it's going to be 5 parts?).

Towa no Quon is the latest big budget Bones Studio B production.  Studio B did Cowboy Bebop movie (2001) -> Scrapped Princess (2003) -> Eureka Seven (2005-2006) -> Xam'd (2008-2009) -> Towa no Quon (2011-2012); they're the major animation studio in Bones.

Towa no Quon is a 5 part theatrically released OAV series similar to how Kara no Kyokai (Garden of Sinners) was released in theaters and Break Blade as well.

It's an action thingy like all their stuff.  And sadly no mecha, but more like sentai and mutants and stuff.  Character designs are by the Bebop/Wolfs Rain/Dark Than Black guy.

Skip to the 4min mark for action scene with Akira arm

I haven't heard any impressions yet and I haven't had the time to check it out (might just wait until all 5 eps are out to watch at once like Break Blade).  All I know is that it bombed in sales like everything coming out of Bones for the last 5 years since the original FMA.  I heard the first OAV blu-ray sold like 700 copies total.

Anyone seen it?

I can see why dubs could be bad, but I dunno, it's not limited to white people speaking.  Like with Hunter X Hunter, there is an entirely new cast for the new anime, and Hisoka seem different character because of the new voice actor.  So yeah.  I prefer the FLCL dub because of how perfect the cast is and that's my favorite anime.

I'm just anti mega threading, not trying to step on your shit. I feel like there's plenty to talk about under the umbrella of anime that it warrants being allowed multiple threads. What if we just had a big thread for gaming instead of a whole forum? It'd suck right?

Ugh, shut the fuck up with this shit already, guys.  This thread went "off-topic" into anime pretty quickly, while the main thread died down.  I was meaning to close the old one and start a new one anyway.

Quote
Haruhi Suzumiya is the general name for a series of light novels written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito which were subsequently adapted into other media. The story follows the title character Haruhi Suzumiya, a high school girl who can unconsciously change reality, and her strange antics with her school club, the SOS Brigade, which she founded to investigate mysterious events. Haruhi forcibly drafts her cynical classmate Kyon, who narrates the series, and similarly recruits three additional members into her club: the silent bibliophile Yuki Nagato, the shy and timid Mikuru Asahina, and the friendly transfer student Itsuki Koizumi. These members soon reveal themselves to Kyon as the extraordinary characters Haruhi is seeking, sent by their various organizations to observe her and hold her reality warping powers in check by maintaining the illusion of a normal life.
