There have been Towa no Quon trailers on the Gundam UC discs, and the episodes/films are available on the Japanese Playstation Store. I haven't heard much more about them than that.

I really wish someone would pick up Break Blade for North America.

Anyone checked out Towa no Quon yet?  I didn't even realize it had come out on video yet, but apparently ep1-3 are (I think it's going to be 5 parts?).

Towa no Quon is the latest big budget Bones Studio B production.  Studio B did Cowboy Bebop movie (2001) -> Scrapped Princess (2003) -> Eureka Seven (2005-2006) -> Xam'd (2008-2009) -> Towa no Quon (2011-2012); they're the major animation studio in Bones.

Towa no Quon is a 5 part theatrically released OAV series similar to how Kara no Kyokai (Garden of Sinners) was released in theaters and Break Blade as well.

It's an action thingy like all their stuff.  And sadly no mecha, but more like sentai and mutants and stuff.  Character designs are by the Bebop/Wolfs Rain/Dark Than Black guy.

Skip to the 4min mark for action scene with Akira arm

I haven't heard any impressions yet and I haven't had the time to check it out (might just wait until all 5 eps are out to watch at once like Break Blade).  All I know is that it bombed in sales like everything coming out of Bones for the last 5 years since the original FMA.  I heard the first OAV blu-ray sold like 700 copies total.

Anyone seen it?

It's getting an American release [sometime], so I'll check it out then.

Why isn't this whole discussion going on in the dedicated anime thread?

Can't we just focus on what utter crap a US-developed AKIRA film would have to be?

The other thread wasn't getting updated very much and this thread ended up turning into general animu discussion, so it's now the main thread.  I left the Akira title the same so people wouldn't wonder where that thread went.

I also updated the old thread with a link to this one before I closed it.   :P

I'll be watching the Ghost In The Shell 1995 movie for the first time tonight, and I'll probably check out Ergo Proxy and Big O since I kind of want to now. I'll probably get to Himu's list after that.

Big O is fucking awesome. Let's organize a watch of it, I'll dl the episodes and stick em on my iPhone and watch em on lunch.

Gonna get on that right now.

I'm just anti mega threading, not trying to step on your shit. I feel like there's plenty to talk about under the umbrella of anime that it warrants being allowed multiple threads. What if we just had a big thread for gaming instead of a whole forum? It'd suck right?

Ugh, shut the fuck up with this shit already, guys.  This thread went "off-topic" into anime pretty quickly, while the main thread died down.  I was meaning to close the old one and start a new one anyway.

Quote
Haruhi Suzumiya is the general name for a series of light novels written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito which were subsequently adapted into other media. The story follows the title character Haruhi Suzumiya, a high school girl who can unconsciously change reality, and her strange antics with her school club, the SOS Brigade, which she founded to investigate mysterious events. Haruhi forcibly drafts her cynical classmate Kyon, who narrates the series, and similarly recruits three additional members into her club: the silent bibliophile Yuki Nagato, the shy and timid Mikuru Asahina, and the friendly transfer student Itsuki Koizumi. These members soon reveal themselves to Kyon as the extraordinary characters Haruhi is seeking, sent by their various organizations to observe her and hold her reality warping powers in check by maintaining the illusion of a normal life.

Well, it was pre season 2, at least. I zoned out after reading about what happened with that mess, so I might have missed where the fan base started turning away from it.

I associate it more with Lucky Star, since the show actually threw the term around quite a bit.

Moe came along before Haruhi. Haruhi and stuff like K-ON was just a convenient point of convergence as it has all of it's moe bases covered and was popular. It's actually a very enjoyable series if you ignore the fans.

Haruhi was moe filth at its core, only sometimes it put that moe filth in decent stories.

It's not even like Working (season 1 at least), which's entire purpose is to mock dumb moe conventions.  Genshiken too but since that's an anime/manga about anime/manga nerds, it's more self aware and comments on moe, than really using moe.

I just really don't see it. K-On is moe to the core, without a doubt. It's slice of life that exists for little reason other than moe. Haruhi actually does things with its characters, gives them situations to deal with and actual development of personality [to some extent]. It does play to its audience at times, but that's cetainly not what the entire show is about.

The punchy punch girl in Working annoys me, but I really like the series. Bakemonogatari and Durarara had some moe in it, but fuck were those brilliant.

Linkz you're being too harsh on Haruhi. I feel people hate it cause it helped popularize moe not so much for what it is, a ditzy stupid supernatural school adventure.

If you want to talk pure moe trash look no further than Toradora.

I said it put them in decent stories! most anime isn't even decent.  And while I liked it, and first season of K-on, actually, I'm comfortable enough calling them what they are without lowering my opinion.  Haruhi plays with the trope more, in that there is a history behind why a character is tsundere and sometimes acts self-aware, but that doesn't absolve it.  The only defense I'd accept is "it's not moe, but it extensively uses moe tropes;" effectively the same thing 95% of the time.

Moe, to me, is a series with few [if any] male characters, huge emphasis on girl-friendship, lack of drama or negative emotions. Everything played as absolutely safe as possible, with nothing in the story that forces the characters give up anything or make any sacrifices or even CHANGE. It panders to the basement-dwelling nerdlings desire to "protect" innocence, cuteness, and purity. I just don't see how Haruhi can possible fit into the mold.

Moe has to do more with the female character's personalities/design....it's not a genre.  A lot of that harem crap is certainly moe though...if not all of it.

What just amazes me is how harem comics n' shows get recycled on a yearly basis, and nobody seems to notice or care that's it the same old shit over and over again.  HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT GUY IS SURROUNDED BY GIRLS BUT DOESN'T WANT TO GO AFTER THEM THEY GO AFTER HIM INSTEAD AND HE DOES NOTHING AND OH WACKY CHARACTERS TOO AND OH BEACH EPISODE AND OH HOT SPRINGS EPISODE NOTHING HAPPENS IN THE END ~FIN~

I'll never understand all those "hilarious" and "cute" anime shit. I'm in it for the violence and superpowered shit.

You think I'm joking? My main reason for watching any anime was the badass fights, Dragonball Z just happened to be badass all around. All ohers I'm familiar with and liked were cartoons I watched in arabic when I was a kid. All others is cause I wanted to see badass shit happened, I stopped watching bleach cause it changed the timeslot and has less blood and violence with pretty bad animation. Same with Naruto cause the fights in Shippuden or whatever sucked so I bailed.

Give me an anime with badass fights and I'm sold.

Moe has to do more with the bubbly-bouncy-energetic girl personalities.

That's certainly part of it, but I don't think that alone really ecapsulates the entire definition.

And I don't really think Haruhi [the character] can really be labeled "tsundere", she's more like...totally self-absorbed with minimal awareness beyond her own pursuits.

Is Aria moe? my favorite character was the cat with the hat.

It's a fine line between moe and plain slice-of-life, but Aria makes it by because it doesn't come across as pandering.

As long that isn't the focus and it doesn't suck. And I agree with you on the last part, every anime seems to be trying hard to rip it off and failing horribly. And now they are trying to rip off whatever started the MOE bullshit and that sucks too.

The last anime i watched was Bastard!! and that anime was fucking awesome.

Hunter X Hunter is the best shonen manga because it's a collection of short series sharing characters.  Every arc is different, whereas Naruto/DBZ/Bleach/etc just replace one final boss for another final boss.

There's quite a lot and there's multiple series.  Battle Angel is nine volumes long, then there's the very small Ashen Victor, followed by Last Order, which retcons the end of Battle Angel and keeps it going.  I think it's around 15-16 volumes long now; still on-going.

All this moe talk is scrambling my brain, so here:

wtf @ the scene of kids getting blown apart by machine guns  :lol

That's from Genocyber, it's incredibly violent but I really can't recommend watching it.

Everything has moe, everything. There isnt a single tv show/movie/anime/manga without it, what people refer to as "moe" anime are those that turn up the fan service or knowingly try and appeal to the most neckbearded neckbeards.

Star Driver continues Bones' tradition of having pure bomba status in both the Japanese and US anime market.

I got my vol.1 today and tried to do a UPC scan to add it to my collection, and it's not even in the system.  Meaning no one else using the database even owns it.  Then I go and check online and despite it having come out a week ago, there isn't a single review on the internet.  Blu-ray.com doesn't even have any user reviews of it!

Man, nobody is buying this  :lol

No, you're just suggesting him bad comedy anime.

I've already suggested him Genshiken.

I'd also suggest he check out Detroit Metal City and Cromartie.

In other words, never suggest blindly. School Rumble is anti-Wrath. Always consider the person's taste when giving suggestions. School Rumble's not that great anyways, though it's a guilty pleasure.
