I found it to be visually stimulating, but lacking depth with a slight wet dog smell.

MAF, you're in coffee town USA, get yourself some Herkimer, Zoka or Stumptown. You'll be in heaven.

You can buy the beans at the stores. I'm sure that fancy grocery store near you carries at least one of them.

Dark roasts have less caffeine.  I guess if you like girly doses of caffeine that's cool.

It's nice and smooth, not as good as Zoka or Herkimer, but at least they don't burn their beans.

I have nothing against Starbucks. I drink it pretty regularly, but I like to support smaller roasters.

Starbucks has went way downhill over the past few years.  I'll still buy beans from them occasionally, but I hardly get drinks there anymore.  I wish I had a local roaster in this area.  The closest place that I'm familiar with that roasts their own beans is 3 hours away in Louisville.   :(

If you have to say something is famous, it's not famous

What are coffee connoisseurs' opinions on Keurigs and similar coffee makers? I'm thinking about getting one.

It is both possible and reasonable to use the term "famous" without having to imply that it is also "world famous." Wellington may be famous for coffee in New Zealand, or even in the south-western Pacific Ocean, or the southern hemisphere. I'm certain there are many Italian actors who are famous only in Italy. In short, just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean no-one else has.

What are coffee connoisseurs' opinions on Keurigs and similar coffee makers? I'm thinking about getting one.

It really depends on a couple of things.  First off, do you want your coffee to taste like coffee or caramel lattes, gingerbread cookies, popcorn, dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream, and all other variations of shit that taste nothing like coffee?

If you want your coffee to taste like coffee and not all that other stuff, then don't buy a Keurig.

Second, do you like fresh coffee with beans that are less than a couple of months out of their roast date (yes, you can tell a difference)?

If you like fresh coffee, then don't buy a Keurig.

Do you ever drink more than one cup of coffee at a time or have someone with you that drinks coffee?

If more than one cup is going to be drank most of the time, then don't buy a Keurig.

Granted, Keurig does sell K-Cups that are just regular coffee and not all that flavored shit, but that is what their top seller is.  I have been told that their coffee is better tasting than your standard cup of Maxwell House or Folgers.  And yes, if you wanted more than one cup, you could always go back and make another, but that is rather time consuming.

I generally don't like Keurig stuff.  I've tasted their coffee before and it was pretty meh to me like most supermarket coffees are.  I try to stay away from stuff that has had a ridiculously long shelf life BEFORE it even gets to the store.

TL;DR I think Keurigs are a shit waste of money.

Starbucks has went way downhill over the past few years.

Starbucks serves their purpose, and they spearheaded the whole coffee movement for the rest of the country.

I'm not a fan of the Keurigs personally, but I know that people love them. I like to buy beans from local roasters and make my own (regular old drip, nothing special) at home during the week and then go to coffee shops on the weekends.

I didn't say it wasn't famous because I haven't heard of it. Just a little bit of wordplay. :)
Yeah, re-reading, my tone seems overly dickish. Sorry!  :-[

Yeah, it's funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday. While I know Starbucks has a history of moving in near existing mom-n-pop shops and putting them out of business, the larger perspective is that they've introduced a much larger group to decent coffee, and have paved the way for many other smaller shops to open, and even to do a better job of roasting and educating than they have.

I will concede that they have helped in the coffee movement and education of coffee.  They're actually the ones that trained me on coffee, and I really loved working for them.  I would even consider working for them again (if I liked the manager at the local one here).

I just say they've went downhill because they've put too much focus into what they think the non-educated customers (see: people who order "karmel frappercheenas" and expect McDonalds milkshakes) and have taken away from the actual coffee drinks.

Wait what, I thought stumptown was only in Portland aka Stumptown

Nope, we've got three Stumptown stores in Seattle and lots of indie shops use their beans. You can also buy their beans at Whole Foods.

Stumptown actually has a shop in New York, which really pissed off Portland.

So I went in to Starbucks this evening to try the Blonde roasts.  They're pretty meh.  I think I would actually drink Maxwell House before I would drink that stuff.  So "Disappointed Me" goes to look at the selection of beans to see if anything else perks my interest.  You know what?  They've completely changed their coffee line-up again.

Blonde has it's own category now.  The other two categories are Medium and Dark.  They now classify coffees from South America (a notoriously light roasted coffee region) as Medium along with their Breakfast and House blends.  They are down to one coffee from the African region now, which is Kenya.  I like Kenya, but it certainly wasn't the best coffee from that continent.  Everything else is Asian.

I went lightly in my post earlier about my thoughts on Starbucks, mostly because I wasn't aware of these most recent changes.

Fuck that, though.  That place is fucking useless to me now.  Fuck non-educated consumer driven sales.

I'll have my shit mailed to me if I have to.  I am actually pretty pissed about this.

My girl has one of those Keurig things, it was given to her as a move-in gift at the last apt she rented. She hardly ever uses it but I was curious so we had a couple of cups this weekend.

"Wait, so all this thing does is piss hot water through a plastic cup?"

"Yes."

"And it's $120?"

"Yes."

This. It's just landfill fodder. They had one at my previous company, but it was only used for clients. They encouraged me to use it once in a "magnanimous gesture," but the coffee was not good and I could only think about the little cartridges being stupidly wasteful. I was happy to brew a cup of my own, using a ceramic filter holder and unbleached paper filters later on in the day.

Yeah, much better to drive to a coffee shop and spend $3 on a large coffee rather than to make it for 30~40¢ and a brief respite from the day, not only while drinking it, but while making it. ::)
