I means that people think that games are supposed to be free.

Why pay when you can download everything for free.

Yep, Japan gaming has moved to the mobile.  Those are insane numbers that almost no games on the planet sees outside Pokemon and a few others.  I fully expect everyone to go mobile and then port the bigger selling games to 3DS and its successor for the next 10 years.

:bow :bow2

Nintendo is a toy company, they will do fine if they close the home console market and focus only on handhelds.

Hell, if they close handheld market as well they can make Pokemon toys.

This would actually be a great time for nintendo to grow, if they released pokemon on phones with some iap.

Kosma, sometimes it's hard to tell if you're trolling, or just willingly exposing ignorance.

Nintendo and Apple are basically hardware vendors with desirable software. Apple licensed MacOS for Mac compatible computers for a couple years; it hurt them. Nintendo basically created the original PlayStation with Sony, and then backed out at the last possible minute to avoid losing any of their exclusive rights by sharing hardware with another manufacturer. Nintendo is never going to put their software on anyone else's hardware.

Ever.

The Mobile games category was the big winner with $266 million, up 14 percent over last month and 52 percent over last year. Mobile publisher King has filed for an initial public offering and added Pet Rescue Saga to its list of top-grossing games on iOS. Pet Rescue Saga generated $360,000 per day, while Candy Crush Saga brought in $850,000 per day.

Probably. Pokemon regularly sells 5-10 million each game at $40 a pop. Even the most lucrative IAP pap is chump change in comparison.

What they should do is sell pokemon on the ios and charge money for each pokemon if they dont want to get it the normal way.  They would make more money than selling pokemon on the 3ds.

Probably. Pokemon regularly sells 5-10 million each game at $40 a pop. Even the most lucrative IAP pap is chump change in comparison.

Actually, Candy Crush is probably closing in on the low end of Pokemon software profits, I'd think.  It's been out a year, so if it's averaging $850,000 per day, that's over $300 mill.  Nintendo doesn't get the full $40 of each Pokemon sold, so they probably haven't pulled much more than that with recent Pokemon games.  I suspect Candy Crush is nowhere near finished its reign of terror either, so it'll probably end up making more money than the recent Pokemon releases quite handily.

But that's neither here nor there.  Pointing to Candy Crush Saga and saying "Look!  It's so simple, just do that!" is like pointing at GTA5, Call of Duty, or hell, even Pokemon itself and saying the same.  Markets shouldn't be judged by the outliers.  It's possible Nintendo could make more money on mobile, but it's equally possible that they wouldn't, I feel.  The mobile market is a very different animal from the traditional console business, which is why the old Japanese game companies are having so much trouble cracking it, while upstarts are making money hand over fist.

I doubt it was making anywhere near $850k/day for a while after it came out, though.

My overall point is that Nintendo can still price at $40 games and sell millions of copies. No single iOS/Android game dev is afforded that luxury, and so the most lucrative games on those platforms are an IAP+spam sandwich of fail and negative psychological exploitation. It's very reminiscent of the Facebook game fad, although thankfully that didn't have any staying power. We can only hope the same is true of "free*" games on iOS and Android, otherwise, pop pop pop.

Also, I get that by nature game design is meant to be addictive. It's a positive feedback loop. But there's a difference between paying once and playing an addictive game, and playing an addictive game that incentivizes you to keep paying.

And I know you've agreed with that before so you're probably doing your contrarian thing again, so go right ahead, I know you agree anyways.

If you think video games are bad, TCGs (trading card games, like Magic or... Pokemans) are the WORST. It's basically socially acceptable scratch off tickets for minors- every 8th pack has a mythic rare or whatever they're called in it!  Just buy 8 packs! Better yet, just buy a box and get 4 of em...

Sure its not certain but im sure they could leverage a lot of their fans.

They could also offer it next to their handheld pokemons and see how the split looks.

Hey you just described every recent Valve game.

"Spend $2.50 to open this chest!  There's a 99.9% chance you'll get worthless junk, but what if you do hit the $5000 jackpot?"

Thankfully those games deal solely in cosmetics that don't affect gameplay.

Its really suprising they havent been banned yet in some countries.

The Chinese version of Dota 2 banned the gacha key and chest system.

I am not sure there are any real pokemon fans out there.  It is a gift giving game.  People buy pokemon for their kids or relatives.  You lose interest in pokemon after the second version you play of it because they are the same exact game gameplay wise for the most part.

It's so weird how often DC replies on the Bore to people who aren't here.  Keep it in the GAF thread!

No! ;)

I expect the air will come out completely once the holidays are up.

I certainly don't expect a sustained recovery - just looks like little choice as you say: 3DS still did well but a lot of people already have it, and the WiiU has a banner title in Mario. But once we get into the new year? Sales are going to come crashing down across the board. God help PS4 and all who sail in her.
