The whole console industry is running on fumes now.
Fixed.

Hardware records broken left and right and no mention of (next gen)software...things must be pretty dire

Latest UK hardware data puts PS4 at 530k and Xbone at 364k.That is 900k pieces of new hardware within a month and yet 8 years old console has no trouble selling more software.

Apologists are already out

but digital
but people have no money for games right now cuz next gen consoles are very expensive, please wait
next gen has no games

i am often baffled by this logic - an 8 year old console with a vastly bigger userbase has no trouble outselling, software wise, two new platforms that have a much smaller userbase.... why is this such a mystery?

Simple.

360 software sales have dropped hard over the past few years, literally 50% overnight in UK and that happened years ago.Being outsold by 360 is nothing to be proud about, certainly not with record breaking next gen hardware sales.

360 has been a disaster last year...except for GTA5,but that tells were this industry is going

What happens when record breaking hardware sales stop, what then?

MATHS IS HARD

Nah,MATH is a beautiful beautiful  science. But MATH is not about numbers, numbers are just...numbers

360 is like 8.5+ million sold in UK,no doubt. But that certainly didn't do much for its software sales for quite some time.

ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE INCOMING:

My local Best Buy was almost cleaned out of PS4 games [still had about 20 copies of Killzone left, but that was it], still a lot of Xbone games, though.

Same with my best buy. Tons and tons of Call of Duty Xbone versions.

No 360 CoDs though in the whole Chicago South Suburb Best Buys. At least as far as last weekend was concerned.

If people saw how software grows in comparison to hardware over time they wouldn't ask this. But they only see or care about week/month one.

BF still cant beat Cod, and Titanfall wont beat Destiny.

Good job EA you had a shot at being top dog in fps amd you ruined it by a botched launch and a exclusivity deal.

The reason I know Destiny is going to bomb is that I'm super interested in it, which is usually the kiss of death for a console shooter.

I still think Titanfall looks boring as fuck, though.

It's hard to gauge the hype for Destiny now and I myself would rather play Titanfall (will do on PC), but:

-it is launching to about 85/90 million higher install base then Titanfall
-from the makers of Halo
-launching for holiday period
-Activision Blizzard has the marketing budget to make it sell

Titanfall will sell very well on the 360 and on the relatively small xbox one base that exists by March but I doubt it will outsell destiny once you include all the platforms.

I think Destiny will do well since its coming out on both current gen consoles. But I think "do well" is relative to what expectation people have and what expectations Activision has. I don't think it will do COD numbers for instance. I think whatever COD game comes out next fall whether its by Treyarch, or Sledgehammer will still sell way better. But I think destiny will do fine. I think Activision marketing will help that a great deal. They have invested too much to not push it hard.

Yeah I doubt it will do COD numbers. But their approach in this one seems a bit more MMO in that regard that they will want to milk the userbase even more then with COD.

I'm expecting lots of IAP, DLC etc. Way more then in COD.

Obviously its harder to tell with a new IP whether that thing will click with the general public versus something that has a track record.

But I look at destiny and I think Borderlands did well. This will have a bigger marketing push from arguably a better marketer with Activision. It will certainly have the gaming press behind them because critics like Bungie (arguably more than they should) The space loot game thing doesn't seem so mainstream, but I have a feeling the marketing will be so strong that joe casual won't necessarily let that discourage him. It will be all the creators of Halo are back with this new shit.

Titanfall also seems like a sure thing and on xbox one I have no doubt it indeed will be a big deal but I wonder if all that excitement hasn't been a little lost on the 360 crowd who are really the audience that needs to be marketed too and so far I would argue they haven't necessarily done a great job with that.

I'm with Shaka this time.

Titanfall--aiming at COD userbase, next gen COD with mechs

Titanfall - aiming at COD userbase, but launching to half of it
Destiny - aiming at the Halo/Borderlands userbase, launching to 2x Halo userbase

A little while back I read about how popular Destiny is in terms of social media talk views hits whatever and found it surprising.  All those woo woo shit trailers...uh, either way, I don't see it hyped up, or even talked about, by games media or forum peoples.  Comparatively, Titanfall is gaming's gabbo.  (these games are six months apart and different genres)

I think it's mostly English speaking media (US/UK).

As the 360 and bone are not popular in mainland Europe (even in the UK Bone is getting outsold by 50% by the PS4 now) I think you just don't see a lot of talk about Destiny.

I'm not hyped for it, I don't like Halo OR Borderlands.
I'm buying Titanfall prob.
I don't have a PS4.

I'm trying to be a better poster in 2014 man, give me a chance.

Here I posted real reasons why I think it will do better:

Quote
It's hard to gauge the hype for Destiny now and I myself would rather play Titanfall (will do on PC), but:

Saying English speaking media and US media are not representative of regions where the Xbox doesn't have a foothold is not PS fanboyism, it's reality.

Titanfall will sell well on the 360 in Europe (UK), but without it being on Playstation it will never do OMG numbers. EA has made a huge mistake IMHO.

Here is something just for Lager,copy-paste from gaf

Quote
According to Macroaxis, a financial engineering tool website that analyzes companies and determines their well-being, Sony Entertainment has a discouraging 79% chance of going bankrupt in the next 2 years

“Based on latest financial disclosure Sony Corporation has Probability Of Bankruptcy of 78%. This is 182.34% higher than that of Consumer Goods sector, and 163.57% higher than that of Electronic Equipment industry, The Probability Of Bankruptcy for all stocks is 122.48% lower than the firm.”

While it wouldn’t be factual to say that SNE will fail in the next 2 years (it’s all a guess), the 78.49% figure is based off of real, actual numbers. Many will consider this number overly inflated, but it all doesn’t sound too far-fetched when you take into consideration some of the things that have been happening over in Sony Land. Last year, Sony’s market value was slashed down to “junk” status, and they’ve sold multiple HQ buildings as well.

Not to mention, Sony still hasn’t recovered from all of the money they’ve lost on the PS3, and the Vita is still not profitable and isn’t selling as well as it should.

For comparative purposes, Macroaxis is stating that Nintendo has only a 22% chance of failing in the next 2 years , which is very ironic considering the fact that the majority of gamers and journalists online are always claiming that Nintendo is in imminent danger, when in reality Nintendo is very healthy and Sony is the actually the one closest to failing out of the console manufacturers. Microsoft is sitting off to the side with only 1% chance of failure.

Nintendo is at 22%,btw

I think Bungie is making all four versions,no outsourcing...could be wrong, but they have said that PC port would spread them too thin

Titanfall is outsourced to someone else,Respawn choice apparently.

With Destiny (fitting name) this was probably their intention from the get go.

60 dollar games with IAP is the future for AAA games like this, see Gran Turismo 6, Forza 5, RYSE.

I dunno, I could see it selling big. There's a 360 version so unless people completely sold their last console they'll probably pick that up since no PS4 version.

As it is, I can't see Destiny selling well. But that's because Bungie has no "effective track record" on consoles besides Halo which was X-box exclusive. Oni didn't light the charts on fire, IIRC. And Bungie was Mac/PC before that... so we'll see if they strike out or hit it big. But as it is, I have no interest in Destiny as soon as it was called a "FPSMMO." Subscriptions to play. :yuck

I don't think Titanfall or Destiny will light the world on fire.  Sci-fi doesn't have as broad an appeal as modern military.

At a time modern military games didn't have as broad an appeal as WW2 ones.  But you're probably right that neither will compare to CoD business.  We'll see.  It'll actually be interesting to see how tastes changed.  At least when Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero died, it felt like a big drop off rather than migration to Skate and Rock Band.

Rust (PC survival game) sells 150k copies in 2 weeks.

Looks like online survival games are the next big thing.  DayZ was perpetually at the top of the Steam best seller charts all throughout the holiday sale and it did not receive a discount once.

I think the more significant bit is that it shows the viability of the early access concept as a money maker. I know Minecraft probably should have already served that purpose but I think a lot of people thought that was a one off fluke. And maybe at the mega level of Minecraft it is. But it seems to be a viable option for a lot of devs now. Arguably a better option than free to play in some aspects which in some cases has a negative stigma of money grubbing and low quality.

At least survival games rely on some strategy, unlike CoD

3 million sold through in 2013.

It looks like December NPD will be good for Xbone(UK hardware is at 360k and LagerPD claims selling like shit outside of UK).

But seriously,Nintendo should enter into biggest fuck up Guinness book.
