3's sales got hurt bad because 2 was such a shitshow

and ALSO it's sales were hurt because of the huge backlash against mgs2. DEAL WITH IT

for real tho everyone hated mgs2 when it first came out. it only got a decent rep many years later

2 was great at the beginning, as soon as Raiden entered the picture things got progressively dumber, with most of the puzzles a repeat of the first game's (yeah I know that's kinda the point). 3 was awesome apart from interface issues - constantly swapping camo and micromanaging your wounds was annoying. I do like the semi open, varied environments and the whole Boss thing was cool. 4 had the 2 problem - great at the beginning, delved into stupidity and waaaay too many cutscenes as you go on. I think I might like 1 the best out of all of 'em.

I might play 3 someday since it's apparently actually really good and V sounds like an actual game and not some shitty fake wannabe movie so I may get that on a steam sale or something eventually as well.

That's Kojima shortcomings in a nutshell. Dude just can't or won't write in his plot actual complex real situations. Which would not be a problem if at the same time he wasn't trying to say stuff about the "economy of war" or the "control of the information".

Worst debate ever. Allied effort prevailed because it was much more than the sum of its parts, kept united and achieved an efficient (at least somewhat) cooperation. Not unlike WW1.

I mean it's not gonna magically make games no one gives a shit about successful, but it's still a good way to being in money if your game isn't allowed on a console. and there are certain franchises/genres that'll do good enough numbers that it'd be stupid for pubs to ignore it.

Steam hasn't been the saviour for a long time. It used to be that merely getting on Steam meant financial success for an indie game. Now the flood gates have been opened pretty much every game that isn't exclusive to a platform (or gigantic enough to be its own platform) is also on Steam. There's only so much gravy to go around.

Cave tried and failed (?) to go mobile, too. The genre is probably just 'dead', with Cave being the last notable dev left alive. Other games occupy people's time and money now.

I also heard more about TITS2's herculean localization effort than I did about the game.

the genre is dead. selling full-priced console releases to the few people who actually care about these games was probably the smartest thing cave did last gen, even if the armchair marketing experts on GAF pretended otherwise. for reference, mushi 360 sold 5.1K units in the first week at full price in japan.

at least the "steam will save cave!!" meme is finally dead. also, I don't agree with saying this game had no marketing or was a stealth release. there was a bunch of "cave on steam" hype in August and they even made a new website, promoted it on social media, etc. it's about as good as it gets for niche games and it still bombed.
