It bears repeating I guess, but the best way to increase your dps is as follows:
1) Stack crit chance wherever you can. You can get 4.5-6% in the following slots: rings, bracers, helm. You can get 6-10% in the following slots: amulet, gloves, and off-hand (shield, etc). You probably want a minimum of 40% crit chance.
2) Stack crit dmg wherever you can. You can get 25-50% crit dmg on rings and gloves, and 50-100% on amulet. Most importantly, a weapon with a socket and the most expensive emerald you can stuff in there is mandatory. You can get up to 130% crit dmg that way currently. You want as much crit dmg as you can possibly get.
3) Upgrade your gems. There's a massive jump from Marquis to Royal gems- +60 stat to +220. You want 3 sockets in your chest, 2 in your pants, and you want to cram the highest tier gem you can in those.
4) Optimize your build, and take advantage of +elemental damage, which you can get on bracers and amulets, and some other slots if you get a cool legendary. For example, look at my crusader in the link below. She only uses Holy skills to attack with- Zeal and Condemn with specific runes. So, I've stacked +holy damage on my bracers and amulet.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Triumph-1211/hero/52288809You'll notice the sheet dps on my Crusader is a bit short of a million, but even that's misleading- the +holy damage really helps boost my dps, plus I'm playing a build where I can have Akkarat's Champion up 100% of the time, giving me another 35% damage boost. Further, I've optimized my build to the point where my normal attacks crit for 30 million+, and when I proc one of my legendary gems (more on those below) I can crit for anywhere between 70-90 million. I clear T6 rifts in less than 4 minutes, and I never die because I've got Akkarat's Champion up constantly- I'm immune to control impairing effects other than Waller, I get 150% armor constantly, and my passive Law skill gives me +140 all resist. If I find myself standing in puddles of poison or arcane beams, I just pop my active Law and for 10 seconds I get an additional +490 all resist.
As for runewords, legendary gems are basically the D3 alternate version. You get those for running greater rifts- you'll get greater rift keystones for beating regular rift guardians on Torment or higher. Keep at it and they'll drop eventually. You can see 3 legendary gems in my rings and amulet sockets. They have one cool effect you get just for socketing them, and then another that unlocks as you level them up once you hit level 25.
lol @ blues being useless- at the highest levels of play, YELLOWS are useless. Legendary and set items only. My crusader above is a good example.
Anyway, hope this helped.
