To be fair, her husband treats her like shit. Her finally snapping shouldn't be blamed entirely on her.

There needs to be a Betty defense force

I think there would be a Betty defense force if her response to Don's behavior wasn't at the same low level as Don's behavior. She runs off with a Daddy complex with another man. Same thing for Don going from Betty to Megan. Since Don is a central character and has his work life to provide some sort of respectable thing about him, people forgive him more. Betty just doesn't have anything going on besides her married life, so there's not a lot to redeem her character even if you sympathize with her situation.

Betty is more complex than that, she is a self centered child because that's how she was raised to be. She was taught to get married, fuck having a career, and have lots of babies. She grew up being taught and idolizing that lifestyle. That was her "value" as a woman. She had to give up her life and aspirations. Mad Men is complicated because it's a show about expectations. Betty bought into housewife "ad" and it has left her unhappy. The same is true for every character depending on what "ad" of life they bought into.

I'd think Betty would feel more happy with her own career and own life separate from her family life.

As for a Betty Defense Force, you're looking at it. Zephyr and I are literally THE defense force for Betty.

Such a weird episode.

This was the first average episode of Mad Men I can think of. I enjoyed it, but ultimately it felt like filler. Such a weird episode.

Is January Jones still in the show?  God she's a fucking terrible actress.  She somehow cheapened that X-Men movie that was already bad enough.

Second this.  I wasn't sure for the longest time, though.  "Is she bad, or just playing a character with stunted emotions and empathy?"  I was leaning towards bad when X-Men cinched it forever.

Had the same problem with Adrian Grenier on Entourage.

I'm pretty sure that Betty lied and she has cancer.

Phone rings and it's for Henry and another phone rings that coincidentally lets Betty pick up the phone and have the opportunity to lie? Check.
Friend hints at lying about having cancer so no one knows and she wants her husband to think she got hit by a car? Check.
Ominous foreshadowing in her dream? Check.
Eat her little girls ice cream, probably out of despair and depression? Check.

Either that or it's Betty being her childish attention whore self.

Some of the anti-Betty posts on the internet are weird and force me to side with her.

I figured she didn't have cancer, but I can see her lying about that. It seems strange for the writers to bring in such a dark cloud just to shoo it away.

I kind of hope they don't go that route though, because it would be cheapened sympathy for Betty. Something about the way Weiner handles her bothers me. It's almost patronizing. It's almost like we're supposed to get "Poor, hopeless Betty" when she is awful in some way to somebody.

I'm also not super enthusiastic about the beginning of this season but I think it will get better. The seasons get more interesting when the directions in which the story and characters go become clearer imo.

I don't know how you couldn't see Sally's downward spiral coming. Red flags have been waived since the beggining. It's my favourite part of the show.

I just rewatched season 4.  Peggy and Don's relationship that season is about as perfectly written a relationship as you can have on TV

Agreed, Peggy is such a fantastic character.

I love how direct they're taking the characters this season. Pete seemed to have a well adjusted family life (for the most part) before this season. This latest episode, he cries in an elevator and glares at a teenage girl getting finger banged by an young, hot jock he unsuccessfully coerced. Pete was utterly, devastatingly emasculated this episode. Which is funny, because I always thought that's the "ad" of life that Pete bought into.

Pete wants to be the big alpha male like Don Draper. He starts the show seducing Peggy not only for the thrill, but because he wants to literally be Don Draper - or at least, that's my interpretation. It makes the character communication between the two even more interesting tonight. Here Don is, Pete's ideal, and he won't bang a hooker. Five or so years ago when Pete joined Sterling Cooper, Don probably would have been all over that. And now, after Don successfully fixes Pete's pipes (haha), he makes him look like a buffoon by taking the moral high road and it stings like a bee. "That's rich coming from you."

This point is made even further by his prostitute scene where HE becomes the king for a while. Finally, Pete does something no one can fault him at.

And yet we see Pete fail, continuously, as he tries to achieve that Draper "ideal". One that probably never existed to begin with. We see Pete emasculated in every single area Don won over time and time again (remember the "fight" with the comedian in season 2? Don ended that quick.)

Such a thrilling episode. I don't remember the series treating the other characters like it would Don before, but they really pulled their punches this episode.

Harsh what they did to Pete in this episode. After he was contionously portrayed as a looser that can never touch Draper, I felt they built him slowly up over the last season. Now the writers really put him down again. I actually started to feel for Campbell, when I actually enjoyed that he got put into his place by Draper before.

Awesome episode. Loved Trudy telling people what to talk about at dinner.

I never really liked Pete in season one but he's grown to be one of my favourite characters. I like that they've broken him down by not being happy now he has everything he saw Don have before.

Anyone else catch Pete calling Don "Dick" when he ran to get the toolbox?

Sterling must be loving this after how Campbell screwed/humiliated him with the airline deal.

Pete doesn't have anything slowing down his spiral. He's in that limbo of having an incredible ego but no confidence and no goals...has the actor who plays Pete been confirmed to come back for another season? Maybe they'll actually have Pete Campbell killed off this season. Either by suicide or by drunken shenanigans.

That would be huge. The table's certainly set for that, he has no willingness to follow anybody else's advice and he wants something he can't figure out. This season has already been paying too little attention to how Don's family life though so I'm doubting they'll have enough time to spend on a Pete-suicide arc. I'm sure the writers have thought about it though.
