based on trailers alone:  different colonies select a male and female combatants to fight in, uh, the hunter games (?).  last kid alive wins.  it's also nascar and the kids are celebrities until they die.  I played the iphone game briefly too.  you run and shoot arrows at giant insects.  so maybe it's survival in general, and not just killing kids.

Hmm, sounds fair. Dunno enough Naruto to say if it qualifies as > Potter though so maybe an equal sign there.

Wife's reading the books just to see what the deal is and her response is 'I'd put it below Harry Potter but above Twilight'. Also the lead character chick is kind of an idiot.

I don't think Hunger Games can even use 'dystopian future' as a point of distinction from BR - that's there in BR too, just as background stuff.

BR was just released on BluRay.  Watch the second film BUT (BUT!) watch it more in line with a Youth Gone Wild film like Wild in the Streets instead of a "real" sequel to BR.

It makes a lot more sense like that.

I'd rather have The Hunger Games as the voice of the American teenybopper id than Twilight, cause at least there's a heroine trying to survive/kill/generally do thangs, rather than deriving her whole identity from being, inexplicably, the love object of a bunch of moody teenage monsters.

If you're a young woman who wants to treat the main character of a novel as your stand-in and bask in the reflected specialness of an awesome guy who totally loves you, at least read Pride and Prejudice.  :rock Austen :rock

I don't know about these book but it's cool there's a positive female role for the teens.. setting and cast seems epic. Day 1.. as long as the concentration campiness from the trailer isn't TOO overbearing.

The movie had kids killing each other, so there's that.

Of course, it's got nothing on The Running Man, but that's kind of a given.

Calling children's books "young adult" so that adults won't feel guilty for reading them is probably the most brilliant idea anyone has ever had.

Friends talked me into seeing this at midnight, I was hoping for some form-fitting attire on Jennifer Lawrence. Plus it was a free ticket.

One scene where a character is applying "medicine" to a wound has funny dialogue because you can replace medicine with KY Jelly, and it still makes sense.

Just rent The Running Man instead.

Since its an American book I'd be amazed if there's not some sort of clumsily shoehorned in Christian allegory, maybe involving the kuk kux klan, and obese fatties in those funny motorised wheelchairs.

You could actually do quite a good tv show using fatsters in their gopeds in medieval jousting competitions, they could go up against mechanical opponents, like a digger or a combine harvester. You could call it something catchy like 'Fat knights get seriously injured for the pleasure of the brain dead proletariate'.

Calling children's books "young adult" so that adults won't feel guilty for reading them is probably the most brilliant idea anyone has ever had.

You can make the same argument with calling comic books "graphic novels." Still pretty brilliant in terms of marketing.

I had no idea what it was until two weeks ago, around the time people started frothing with excitement and talking about it everywhere.

I saw the movie last night. It was... ok. Yeah, it's targeting the younger crowed, the PG13 rating certainly dragged it down. I thought was struggling to maintain the seriousness and savagery of the "games" with that rating. The dialogue was tolerable, the cast was ok, save for Jennifer Lawrence; she was great, and definitely carried the movie.

I'm not good with rating movies, but I can easily dock the experience a star or two for how horrible all the hyperactive children and manchildren were at the theater. If you're sensitive to those crowds, you better avoid it for now.

What time did you go?  I was considering a late show for that very reason, but I suspect it won't make a difference.
