I'd bet money that this doesn't sell half of what the Wii sold, or a third. I think that market/ship sailed...to Apple. A tablet alone isn't going to win them back. Nintendo struck gold with a fickle audience initially but should have learned their lesson when said audience completely disappeared over the last couple years. Meanwhile the 360 sold like gangbusters due to satisfying a core audience that is always there, and actually buys games yearly.

There are very very few games on the 360 and PS3 that run at 60 frames per second at 1280x720 res, so this is a step up from current consoles.

I'm really baffled at the reactions that seem to think that this is somehow a good thing. I mean, I get that not everyone is a tech geek that even gives a shit about high resolution and fancy graphics. But, if that's where you fall, this news should just be met with a shrug of shoulder and an "eh, looks good to me."

If you actually care about hardware, I don't understand how you can interpret this as good news.

While Nintendo's not #1 in my heart I'm just completely amazed at what's going on at E3. Nintendo were given a second chance to wow people after the debacle at the last E3 where a whole lot of nothing was announced, and they've fumbled it big time. Iwata said they've been working on Wii U since 2008, and this is the best they come up with?

Ubisoft's survivial horror game ZombiU is a key launch game for Wii U, but the publisher isn't ruling out the idea of bringing it to other platforms.

Speaking to IGN, a Ubisoft exec said the game could potentially be ported to Mcirosoft's new Xbox SmartGlass technology or the cross-play between Sony's PS3 and Vita.

But such a conversion wouldn't occur until well into 2013, and only if it holds true to ZombiU's original concept.

"ZombiU at its core was designed to be a great Wii U game and in order to make that work on other platforms, they would have to change a lot of what makes the game cool," said senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key.

"And I'm not saying that can't be done, but not in the next six months, you know?"

Key added that Ubisoft has considered bringing Wii launch title Red Steel to other platforms, but could not do so without losing the core appeal of the game: the motion controls.

However, the similarities between the Wii U GamePad and the multi-screen technologies on Xbox and PlayStation means Ubisoft will have more opportunities to bring its Nintendo exclusives to other platforms.

"There's definitely going to be knowledge that we gain from developing for Wii U that we'll be able to transfer not only to SmartGlass technology but to also to even the cross-talk on PlayStation 3 and Vita," said Key.

So it's a timed exclusive then.

Even if, as some have said, the Wii U is only “as powerful” or “slightly more powerful than” current-gen systems, I don’t see the problem. I never hear anyone complain that iPad games don’t look as good as PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 ones, for instance, or that PC games — now crunched by more than half-a-decade more powerful hardware than either the Xbox 360 or PS3 — are in any way superior because their visuals are more advanced.

he's half-right.  folks like my fiance and her kids don't really give that much of a shit about graphics capabilities, a game is either "awesome" or trade material. up until christmas they only had a wii, and even now that they have a ps3 ( graphics) they still retain that opinion.

nintendo is totally trying to capture some of that other market now, and doing it in the usual halfassed shrugging way. and those folks, those are the ones who complain about subpar graphics and make comparisons all the time.

Having seen Nintendo unveil the final version of the device at E3 this week, Molyneux expressed concern that having to repeatedly shift between looking at the GamePad and looking at the TV will be too demanding.

"I am not really decided about Wii U," he told Eurogamer's German cousins Games Industry Germany. "I watch people playing and they sometimes seem to be confused about which screen they should look at when they play with the tablet.

"I also feel that monitoring both screens turns out to be a bit demanding, as some games make it necessary to change your view from time to time between both screens."

Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer for Microsoft's game business, echoed Molyneux's sentiment.

"One of the things that's interesting is, when you're playing a quick, real-time twitch game, how much can you look up and down between the screens?" he asked in an interview with GamesBeat.

"That's an interesting question. We've put a huge amount of design into how we do our controllers to understand user experience, and there's a lot in there that I think.. This controller has a lot of science behind it, about why it works great for different types of gaming."

"I believe this approach is actually better because what we're doing is embracing it as truly a supporting screen," he said. "Not as the thing you should be looking at. Therefore, it needs to light up, it needs to notify you, it needs to actually provide content that's relevant in that example.

"So I feel pretty good about that. I certainly don't think there are any latency issues there. You can use any device for control, for tabbing, for browsing, for watching movies. It's got a richer platform for things."
