At least third parties already have years of experience using a touch screen as a lazy inventory or map screen.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has admitted the Wii U GamePad's tablet screen was almost dropped late in the console's planning stages.

The company was worried the screen's price would drive up the console's overall cost to consumers.

"Sometime during that final discussion we almost gave up on the idea of the additional screen," Iwata told The Telegraph. "This was due to our concern over the expected high cost, it may not have been feasible to create this and sell it at a reasonable price point for the consumers."

The fact Microsoft and Sony have both now produced their own dual-screen concepts, Xbox SmartGlass and Vita Cross-Play, only validated Nintendo's decision, Iwata added.

"It's quicker than before. After our showing of motion control, it took three years for other companies to follow suit. But this time it's just one year after our proposal, even before we brought out the actual product. I think that proves the great potential of what we showed last year."

While the GamePad's touch screen stayed, Nintendo decided to roughly match the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360's graphical power - still a vast improvement from the Wii for third-party publisher's multi-platform releases.

"In the case of the Wii U, we have decided to make it so that it is capable of doing whatever the other two consoles can do, so games are easily portable," Iwata explained.

Beyond the lifespan of the current generation of rivals, Iwata was unfazed by the impending threat of a new Xbox or PlayStation.

"My impression is that the things that happened with Wii vs. 360 or Wii vs. PS3 won't happen again," he added. "If they decide to increase the spec numbers, will the consumers be able to realise the difference from today so much that they can understand it's much superior to today's machine?"

WiiU is a disaster in the making... Even the people I know IRL who are Nintendo loyalists are either cold on the platform or they don't know much about it at all. And it's supposed to come out later this year? The whole thing really needed more time in the oven, and I can't believe Nintendo's repeating the same mistakes they made in prior eras.

Next gen should be interesting to see play out, though considering my taste for weeaboo/retro games I will probably be mostly a 3DS player. I'm sure the Nextbox won't have much interesting for me excepting indies, and PS4 is really up in the air at this point (hopefully it's not the disaster the PS3 and Vita were).

Nintendo wanted to drop the screen because it would have eaten too much into their profits.

Nintendo desperately longs for the Wii Play/Wii Fit days.  Nintendo is trying to find a way to rekindle that kind of insane demand while putting in as little effort as possible to do so.  They're banking on lightning striking the same spot twice.

Unfinished rush release Holiday 2012
???

Do you remember the news articles that came out in the months after E3 2011 about Nintendo basically starting the Wii U over from scratch?  I know it's around here somewhere, because we all probably ridiculed it but that explains the rushed feeling.

Group hug everyone

Honest question for Drinky or anyone else with the foggiest idea about designing proprietary, mass-market hardware. Let's say they sell this thing for $300. If taking little to no loss per console is important to you, just how bad is this hardware framed in that light? I know most of the talk over there is silly damage control, but there are at least a couple of people that I tend to not just regard as hopeless fanboys that think that -- even though it's been seven years since the 360 -- getting hardware out the door that is a respectable improvement over the 360 can't be accomplished for anywhere close to what Nintendo would sell it for. Now, this strikes me as disingenuous and/or ignorant, but I'm really not enough of a tech dork to be able to ballpark what a competent console in 2012 should cost.

So, what say you?

don't worry - the best game at E3 showing the most hints of next get - running on a high end PC - (Watch Dogs) is probably going Wii U timed exclusive because "you never know what happens behind closed doors" with Nintendo

I doubt Ubi will want to go up against Diablo 3, GTAV, Half Life 3, etc etc... i think the Wii U is already chock full of secret announcements that only exist in the minds of children.

I'm not a Drinky but there may well be some truth in some of the price tag rumours floating around. I would also like to add that if the Wii U -is- indeed 34,980 yen that it's so completely and utterly FUCKED that i don't know where to start. I think Japan might just end gaming at this gen.

Also, Dear Twata-san.... if it's so hard to tell between PS4 and Wii U and, as you recall, it was hard to tell between Wii and X360/PS3.... then how will your fanthings be able to tell the difference between Wii U and PS3/X360? If i were you - i'd be worrying about that... actually... you probably don't... you do , after all, have "the best fans in the world" (i.e. dumb, stupid, buy any old shit, we can slap any price tag we want on this!)

I was seriosuly surprised they announced a time frame at E3 as there are strong rumours from several places that the machine will be pushed back. I suspect though that they'd see that as suicide and that getting out -even with the slimmest of games line ups- will be preferable to a delay.

No matter what the Wii U is launched at - no Nthing will be buying it because they expressed horror at Vita because "will wait for ambassador for this old tech" so - i expect them to wait for the same thing to happen for the WiiUsedHardware2007 - just like they pretended they would with the Vita that they had no interest in.

I do wonder about the range of the wii u.  It's impressive how it streams seemingly without lag, but if it's restricted to the same room, you can't play in bed or on the toilet.

Waggling a remote I can understand, we're all used from years of using cheap batteries, AMIRITE?!

Waggling a slab, on the other hand, is troublesome. I wonder if Nintendo's engineers have factored in wind resistance when they designed it.

I mean even Apple tries to avoid it on the iPad (e.g. Adding a dedicated "undo" button on the keyboard instead of relying solely on waggle as they do on the iPhone/iPod).

[crowd sourced hate, please help]

A long long time ago
I can still remember how
Wii music used to make me smile
And I knew Nintendo had a chance
That they could make old people dance
And maybe they'd be in profit for a while

But 3DS made me shiver
With huge price cut I'd whimper
Bad news was on "the bore" '
we'd get no port of Di-ab-a-lo

I can't remember if I was jaded
When I read how we got Xenoblade'd
But something riled me deep inside
**The day the whimsy died**
So

[Chorus]
Bye, bye This Lastgen'ian Try
Drove my whimsy to the EmCee but the Emcee did cry
Them "last gen" boys were runnin UE two point five
Singin' this'll be Wii U in 20-one-five
This'll be Wii U in twenty-one-five

.... NEXT !
